BEATEN AND ROBBED, j
Louts lli iiili i, nt Win, IVnn, Visited hy
Safe lllowers.
At about two o'clock Sunday morning
Louis llendcr, the well known hotel keeper
at Win. l'enn, was rudely awakened fiom
bis slumber iu his sh ciing apartment, by a
blow on the back of tho head, lie attempted
to arise and iccclved another blow on tlic
head, hut by an almost superhuman effort
succeeded iu getting out of tho bed and
found himself confiontrd hy six masked
men, who sit upon and heat him. The blood
stained lied clothing show that thcio was a
desperate struggle. Hciidcr finally became
exhausted and was obliged to give up the
struggle, but he did not become uncon
scious. His hands wcio tied together and
two of the men hustled him Into a lied room
acioss tlie hall. Stains on tlie Honrs show
that Heiii'ier was bleeding profusely when
led away. A few minutes later the safe,
which was in Hender's bedroom, was blown
open, tlic burglars secured $.VI iu cash, four
gold watches, a bracelet and four rings,
Hender's four childien weie in a hedmom ad
joining the one whcio their lather slept. The
childien range from 7 toll yeitts of age.
They weie kept under guard by one of the
burglars, who held a lcvnlvcr at tho head of
tho eldest child, a girl. Tho door of the safe
was shatteiid.
Having in enmpllshed this work tlie bur
gl.ns who did it went to the bedroom whole
Hcnder was under guard and demanded that
lie tell them in what part of tho cllar he
had money hittied. Homier at fust denied
that he had money theie, but an Idea of
possible lcllcf struck him and ho consented
to go to the cellar and show the burglars
where he had $1,000 buried. In reality there
was no money there at all. When about todi
scend from tho second to tlic first door Hcnder
l ulled out in German to his eldest girl, tell
ing her that she should escape from the
house and summon assistance while tho
burglars took him to tlie cellar. Appaicntly
one of tlio six burglars undcistood (Icimati,
as lie quickly hurried to tlie children's bed
room and warned them that If any of them
attempted to give an alarm they would be
shot. Hemlir was then taken to the bar
mum on the Hist Hour and after the burg
lars helped themselves to several glasses
of beer they look Hendcr into tlie cellar.
Tlie latter designated tho place where tlie
wealth was suppo.ed to bo buried and two of
the burgl.ns commenced work witli pick nud
shovel. Helieving that assistance might
an ive, Hcnder tried to keep tlie men at
work, telling them that the money was
bulled six feet. Tim burglars became sus
picious, however, and attacked Hcnder again,
to make him tell the phuo of concialmcnt.
In tho seullle Hcnder managed to partly drag
tho mask fiom one of the men who piomptly
knocked him against tlie cellar wall and
said," ! If you do that again 1
will kill you." Hcnder was boatcti again
and left unconscious in the cellar. When he
reeoveied tho burglais were gone. Hendcr
made his way to tlie upper part of the house
and the children wero sent out to give an
alarm. Hcnder is under the care of Dr. W.
Stein, of town. His head is cut iu several
places and his eyes are fearfully bruised. Tho
icports that t lie man is likely to dio are ex
aggerations, however, ho was in a bad condi
tion at tiist, but hassincoiccovcrcd somewhat,
llo will sutler from his experiences for several
days. Mr. Hcnder yesterday denied to a re
pot tor that ho succeeded in identifying one
of the men. No cluo has been found leading
