Now York, May 9. General Stewart L. Woodford, United States minister to Spain, arrived on La Touralne yester day mornliifr, and left for Washington In the afternoon. La Touralne also had on board a number of attaches of the United Stntes legation at Madrid, In cluding George Stanford Sickles, first secretary of the legation; Captain T. H. Bliss, Colonel Kellogg, military at tache, and Captain C. L. Dyer, naval attache. Besides these were Shy Ting, secretary of the Chinese legation at Washington, accompanied by Hon Soo, nlso of the legation. A reception com mittee from the Union League club and U. S. Grant Post 32?, G. A. II., met General Woodford at Quarantine and accompanied him to this city. General Woodford declined to be Interviewed. Mr. Sickles, when Informed that cable dispatches had stated that the train on which the members of the legation had come from Madrid to Paris had been attacked by a mob and that stones had been thrown at the party, said: "Well, some things were thrown at the train, but the demonstration was not of a serfbus character. A few windows In one of the cars next to the party were broken, but none of us were Injured. While at Madrid we were treated with the utmost courtesy." Mr. W. G. Cannon, of Denver, Colo., who had been traveling abroad, said he was forced to return to this country, and he could not continue through Spain during the present Btate of af fairs. In Paris, Mr. Cannon said, the feeling Is most bitterly anti-American. Every person who Is thought to be an American Is elbowed oft the sidewalks, Jostled by the crowds, and everything possible done to show the antipathy of the French. Stieet cars will not stop to take on American passengers, rates of exchange in money are exorbitant, and small purchases are not encouraged by many of the shopkeepers except at figures three or four times the actual value. Bishop John L. Spalding, of Peoria, Ills., stated that the feeling of the French toward the Americans was In tensely hostile. He said that he un derstood that one of the reasons for this was that eight-tenths of the public debt of Spain was held by the French people, and that the latter country also owed nearly all of the Spanish railroads. Shu Tyng, secretary of the Chinese legation at Madrid, said: "My country Is in favor of the United States. Wo have been friendly for many years, and we shall continue to be so." LUEED INTO AN AMBUSOADE, For Over Half nn Hour tlio Vlclcl)iir nnd tho Cutter Morrill Wore Under tho 1'lro of tlio Guns of tho Snntn IZCIurn Wntor Jlnttorlu. Key West, May 9. Only poor marks manship on the part ot the Spanish gunners saved the Vlcksburc and the cutter Morrill Srom destruction olT Havana Saturday. For over half an hour they were under the lire of the guns of the Santa Clara water batter ies, but both escaped without material Injury, although shrapnel shells from eight Inch guns exploded all about them, and both now show the pitted scars of the Snnnlsh bullets. The wily Spaniards had arranged a trap to send a couple of our ships to the bottom. They baited it as a man would bait a rat trap. A small schooner was sent out from Havana harbor to drav some of the Americans Into the ambuscade. The ntte worked like a charm. The Vlcksburg And the Morrill, in the heat of the cHuse and In their contempt for Spanish gunnery, walked straight Into the trap that had been set for them. Had the Spaniards possessed their souls In patience but five minutes longer not even their bad gun practice would have saved our ships, and today two more of our ves sels would He at the bottom within two lengths of tho 111 starred Maine. , Friday evening the Vicksburg and the Morrill, cruising to the west of Morro Castle, were flred upon by the big guns of the CoJImar batteries. Two shots were fired at the Vicksburg and one at the Morrill. Both fell short, and both vessels, without returning the fire, steamed out of the range. But on Saturday the Spaniards had better luck. The schooner they had sent out ran off to the eastward, hugging the shore. About three miles east of tho entrance of tho harbor she came over on the port tack. A light haze fringed the horizon, and she was not discov ered until three miles off the shore, when the Mayflower made her out and signaled tho Morrill and Vicksburg. Captain Smith, of the Morrill, and Commander Lilly, of the Vicksburg, immediately clapped on all steam and started In pursuit. The schooner Instantly puf about and ran for Morro Castle before the wind. In doing so she would, accord ing to the well cherished plot, lead the two American warships directly under the guns of the Santa Clara batteries. These works are a short mile west of Morro, and are a part of the defenses of the harbor. There are two batteries, one of which mounts modern ten inch and 12 Inch Krupp guns behind a six foot stone parapet, In front of which are 20 feet of earthwork nnd a belting of railroad Iron. This battery Is con sidered the most formidable of Ha vana's defenses, except Morro Castle. The Morrll and Vicksburg were about six miles from the schooner when the chase began. They steamed after her at full speed, the Morrill leading until within a mile and a half of the Santa Clara batteries. Commander Smith, of the Vicksburg, was the llrst to realize the danger Into which the reckless pur suit had led them. He concluded It was time to haul off, and sent a shot across tho bow of the schooner. Tho Spanish skipper instantly brought his vessel about, but while she was still rolling in the trough of the sea, with her sails flapping, an eight inch shrap nel shell came hurling through the air from the water battery, a mile and a half away. It passed over the Morrill and exploded less thnn 50 feet on the port quarter. Two more shots followed In quick succession, both shrapnel. The crews of both ships were at their guns. Lieutenant Craig obtained per mission to return the Are. At the first shot the Vicksburg, which was in the wake of the Morrill, slightly In shore, sheered off and passed to the windward under the Morrills' stern. In the meantime Captain Smith also put his helm to port, and was none too soon, for as the Morrill stood off a solid eight inch shot grazed her star board quarter and kicked up tons of water as it struck a wave 100 yards beyond. Captain Smith said afterward that this was undoubtedly an eight Inch armor piercing projectile, and that It would have passed through the Mor rill's boilers had he not changed her course in the nick ot time. All the guns of the water batterv were now at work. Ono of them cut the Jacob's ladder of the Vicksburg adrift, and another carried away a por tion of the rigging. As the Morrill and the Vicksburg steamed away their aft guns were used, but onlv a few shots were fired. The Spaniards continued to fire shot and shell for 20 minutes, but the shots were Ineffective. Some of them were so wild that they aroused the American "Jackles" to Jeers. The Spaniards only ceased firing when the Morrill and Vicksburg were completely out of range. The officers of both the Morrill and Vicksburg frankly admit their own recklessness and the narrow escaoe of their vessels from destruction. The Sure La Grippe cure.
