Mines Last Month.
Mine Inspector William Stein says thore
worn no fatal accidents in tho mines of his
district during tho mouth of April. Thore
woio live cases of injury, hut all except one
were of a trivial character. The exceptional
case was that of John Dempsey, of Harry's,
who had one of his hands blown oil1 at the
Knickerbocker colliery by the caieless hand
ling of explosives. Neaily sill the accidents
wuro caused by the shottening of squibs.
Ono man injuied was William ICuskawh.
Hi was working at the Lllangowan colliery
and was caught by Inspector Stein aud the
inside foreman when about to lire a blast
with tho squih shortened an inch aud a
quatter. Ho was nnestcd, but tho case was
dropped and Kuskawicss was discliaiged from
tho colliery. Two of tho cases of injuries
were those of James and Richard Nicholas,
miners at tho KllaPgowan colliery. They
weie slightly burned by powder. A spaik
f i oni ono of their lamps foil into a cartridge
which had been left open.

man, on North Chestnut street, was tho scene
of a surprise party last night, in honor of
their daughter, Florence, who has returned
fiom a visit of several months in New' York.

afternoon a large llag 10x15 feet in size was

top of the broaker of l'acker collieiy No. 2.
The pole is surmounted by an Aiueiican In
dian six feet in height. Music was furnished
hy tho I.cnigh Valley Coal Company's baud
and tho Temperance Society's drum corps, of
Lost Creek. l!ev. 1'. V. Daggett made a
speech. Tlio sehool'clilldron of West Maha
noy township wero in attendance and sung
patriotic songs. Tho llag laislng was in
charge of Foremen John 1'. llronnan and
John T. Junes. This same program will he
rendered at another flag raising at l'acker

ignited the gas formed in the sump. Franks
was severely but not dangorously huiued
Kay was standing on tho pUnks, and tho
explosion caused him to lose his balance, and
to fall into tho water. He was drowned.
The men wore warned not to use naked

Solicitor Uurko said Mr. btrauglin was
light and it would bo proper for Council to

whereupon Mr. Strattghu moved that tho
borough pollco, constables and Chief Hurgess
ho instructed to enforce tho law regarding
tramps.
Mr. James said ho was opposed to putting
convict labor on the strcets.aud Mr. Straughn
said that was not tho object of the motion.
I'ho intention was to gct tho borough ofiicors
to clear tho town of tramps or bums witli tho
aid of a law that gives them lull power. Ihe
motion was unanimously cariictl.
Tho hog nuisance was again brought up
aud Mr. liochm said tlio olliccrs of the bor
ough could soon abate it if they would pro
secute the owners under tho general laws
against common nuisances.
Instructions were given to get testimony in
shape for tho case of the borough against tho
Lakeside Electric Hallway Company, which
comes up on the Uth inst.
Upon the statement of Borough Solicitor
Burke that thoie was no way hy which the
case of A. J. Womelsdorf could bo opened
and Mr. Woinolsdorf would accept payment
of tlio judgment with interests and costs to
date in full settlement of all claims against
the borough, instructions wero given to inako
a settlement accordingly. Tho whole claim
now amounts to f 1,125.1)3.
Mr. l,ally suggested that shields ho pro
cured for thu helmets uf tho police, and the
stripes bo removed Irom tho coat sleeves of
the nllicers. He said a nuiiil.er of people had
criticised the stripes. The stripes will remain
and, unless Council channel its mind, no
shields Will be put on tho helmets.

dam of your water works as i5 will require to
furnish you all Ihe water you will need in
dry seasons at $1.50 per foot, everything

meeting witli tho understanding that Mr.

Tho water committee was instructed to get
bids for tho coaling contract aud, upon sug
gestiou of Mr. Kuglcrt, ascertain if it is prac
ticable to havo a railroad siding put in near
the pumping station to do away with tho
hauling.
Tho method of making tho direct pumping
couueetiou was left in the hands of tho
water committee witli instructions to call for
bids fur the contract.
The Columbia II. & S. P. U. Co. scut In a
communication asking that Council have the
Hour of tlio company's engine room repaired.
aud also tho celling of the room which has
heeu damaged hy the leaking of the heating
apparatus in tlio Council room. A request
was also made that a ceiling bo placed in tho
lockup as it is almost impossible to transact
business in tho company's room when there
are unruly prisoners iu tho cell, ami to pro

from tho lockup. Tho matter was referred
to tho construction committee to investigate
the matter and report at the next meeting.
Tlio repoit of the Chief of Polico for April
showed 21 arrests, 11 served timo and 13 paid
fines. Collections, 2(1. During the mouth
twelve lamps wero out. Lodgings weio fur
nished to 17 people.
Tlio report of tho Chief llurgess showed
collections to tho amount of 20.50, of which
fill ho received from arrests, $2.50 for
theatrical license, $7 for horse sale license
and $1 for a building permit
Tho leport of the llorough Treasurer
showed a balance on hand May 5th, $7,870 71

Wheat yesterday took another big jump,
and was quoted at $150 per bushel. Ploiir
will rise correspondingly if the above quota
tion does nut Uncinate. This morning Hour

Deaths untl FlinerHls,
Lost Creek to-day mourns the loss of one
of its most respected citizens, Mrs. Cook, who
died at her home last eveulng at G:30 o'clock.
She had sulfered from theoll'ects of a paralytic
stroke which caused her death, and from
which sho had beeu ailing for a long timo.
Tho deceased is survived by three sons and
two daughters.
Mis. Harry Medea, biater-in-law of Post
master Daniel Itcdca, of town, died at her
homo in Shamokin yesterday after a brief
illness. The funeral will take placo to
morrow afternoon.
Tho funeral of Mamie, the 12 year-old-daughter
