At B o'clock nst evening the recall guns boomed from the ileet of the North Atlantic squadron, ordering- all the officers and men who were ashore? to rejoin their hips forthwith. At nightfall, how ever, there had been no movement of the lleet. Warlike bulletins followed fast upon one another, and Intense ex citement prevailed. Rumors that sail ing orders had been received wero atloat yesterday afternoon, but no of ficial continuation of them could be ob tained. Tho matter of fact manner with which the highest officials ao- ccpted the newspaper bulletins to this effect Indicated that authoritative In formation, If not Instructions, had come from Washington, and the activ ity on the ships and docks bora out the reports of un early movement. This was verified early this morning, when the lleet sailed awav to establish a blockade of Havana. The lleet later on will be supported by troops, who will be dispatched to Cuba as soon as, In the opinion of the president, It Is possible to use them advantageously ln( the occupation o the Island. Meanwhile, as rapidly as troops can be rushed to Key West and ther points on the South Atlantic and gulf coasts they will be hurried for ward. Jt Is belbved that It will take ten days to contentrate at the coast an army of sulhclent size, with the necessary supplies, to make an effective campaign. It Is the purpose to gather these tioops and then make a sharp, decisive movement. Tho ultimatum of the United States was received yester day in Kngllsli. The Spanish govern ment Immediately broke oft diplomatic relations with the United States, noti fying the United Stutes minister to this effect before he was able to present any note. A Ncml-olllclal note, Issued yes terday afternoon, says: "Tho Spanish government having re ceived the ultimatum of the president of the United States, considers that tin document constitutes a declaration of war -jgnlnst Spain, and that the proper form to be adopted Is not to make any further reply, but to await the expira tion of the time mentioned In the ulti matum before opening hostilities. In the meantime the Spanish authorities have placed their possessions In a state of defense and their lleet Is already on Its way to meet that of the United States." As a result of Spain's action Minister Woodford at once made hurried prepa rations to leave Madrid. He was ac companied to the railroad station by G. II. Barclay, tho British charge d'affaires, and tho secretary of the German embassy, Count Von Castell Ruedenhausen. An Immense crowd gathered at tho station, composed of all classes. A strong force of police and civic guards maintained order, while amid tho crowd moved a large number of pri vate detectives. A detachment of tho civil guards accompanied General Woodford to the frontier. The retir ing minister maintained his usual calmness, but looked worn and fa tigued. When General Woodford took his seat tn the train there was a stir among tho spectators and a rush toward the win dow of the carriage. The minister Bat unconcerned and dignified. Senor Aguilera, the civil governor of Madrid, his gigantic figure rising head and shoulders above the crowd, in a stentorian voice raised a cheer, which was thrice responded to by the crowd. "Viva Espana" resounded throughout the station until the train was fairly outside. This was not meant as a kindly farewell, but was an explosion of long pent up feelings. The English flag Is now flying over the American legation, which Is still guarded by the police. Last night enthusiastic processions moved through the principal streets. The mob gathered In front of the building of the Equitable Life Insur ance company and Insisted upon the re moval of tho American eagle, which was thrown down and smashed to bits, Tho fragments wero then carried through the streets by a cheering, yell ing mob to the Military club, where tho members appeared upon the balcony and enthusiastically cheered the dem onstrators, shouting "Viva Espana" and "Down with the Yankees." Tha police mixed with tho crowd and al lowed the demonstrations to go on without restraint. The civil governor of Madrid. Senor Aguilera, Instead of prohibiting dis order, allowed complete liberty of ac tion, mingling among the demonstra tors. He was loudly cheered, especially when the American escutcheon was thrown from the balcony of tho Equi table building fell at his very feet. Aguilera, as If trampling on the es cutcheon, addressed the populace amid enthusiastic applause. He said: "The Spanish lion Is roused from his slumber. He will shake his mane and disperse the rest of the brute creation." The demonstration then continued, a part of the mob proposing to demon strate in front of the American lega tion, which is now under the British flag. There Is a bitter feeling here against There Is a bitter feeling here against Great Britain, especially on the con traband of war and privateer questions. It is the belief of the general public that Great Britain is playing, In an underhand manner, the gamo of the United States. At yesterday afternoon's cabinet council Senor S-'agasta addressed tho queen regent thus: "In this solemn moment, when tho flrst cannon shot Is almost audible, the government is prepared to assume tho entire responsibility for its decisions, but It considers it opportune that tho auecn recent should hear the opinion of all the political leaders and the In fluential men of all parties, as well as the principal generals." V. Pierce, chief consult ing physician to the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, at Buffalo, N. Y. With the assistance of his staff of able physi cians, he has prescribed, iu the past thirty years, for many thousands of women. Dr. Pierce is pre-eminently a sympathetic phy sician. Perhaps more than any other man in the profession lie realizes the hardships of woman's work, and the disadvantages under which she labors because of the weak, delicate and susceptible structure of the feminine organism. Ilis immense prac tice in diseases peculiar to women forced upon his recognition the fact that women would never take the proper care of their health, so long as that care required the repugnant "examinations" and "local treatments" insisted upon by nearly all physicians. After years of studj-he invent ed a remedy now known as Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription that is an absolute and unfailing cure for the most complicated and obstinate cases of diseases peculiar to women. This wonderful medicine cures in the privacy of the home, and does away with the necessity for obnoxious "local treatment."
