AVBRhlngton, April 18. The ovation
that has followed Consul General Pltz
hugli Lee since he set foot 011 Ameri
can soil on his return from Havana
culminated last night In Washington
in what was In many ways one of the
most remarkable demonstrations the
city has ever seen. From the moment
he nllRhted in the railroad station in
the afternoon he was surrounded by a
cheering crowd that followed him to
the state department, and the spectacle
of army and navy olllcers and govern
ment employes cheering outside the
very door of the secretary of state was
wholly unprecedented In the history of
that staid department. At night the
city turned out in thousands, when a
serenade was given General Lee at his
hotel, and stood for hours in the street
waiting a glimpse of him.
The popular consul general arrived
In this city at 2:30 o'clock yes
terday afternoon. A large crowd of
enthusiastic admirers had gathered at
the Pennsylvania station, and when
the general stepped from the train he
was gieeted with a tremendous out
burst of applause. Women waved their
handkerchiefs and men their hats, and
altogether the demonstration was a
noiauie one. Washington crowds us
rule are not demonstrative, but thin
occasion was a conspicuous exception.
Uy the time he waB ready to alight the
crowd was so dense about the train
that even with the assistance of a pla
toon of police it was with difficulty that
ho reached the platform.
Several personal friends of the gen
eral, among them a number of ladles,
pressed forward, and finally succeeded
in grasping him by the hand. One of
the ladles presented him with a bou
quet of roses tied together by ribbons
of the national colors, and bearing a
tiny Confederate battle Hag. Immedi
ately the crowd began to cheer, and
round after round of applause greeted
him as he walked slowly and uncov
ered down the long platform of the
station. He was driven to the state
department, where another enthusias
tic crowd greeted him. After a brief
interview with Secretary Sherman h"
was taken to the White House, receiv
ing a continuous ovation on the trip.
The night demonstration waB almost
as quick and unpremeditated as that
which had creeted General Lee at the
depot and state department. The Uni
ted States Marine band had been so
cured from the barracks, and the Sev-cnty-llrst
Regiment band, under the
leadership of Professor Fanclnulll, for
merly conductor of the Marine band,
came over from New York on an after
noon train, accompanied by a big crowd
of New Yorkers, and bv S o'clock the
crowd was 5,000 strong about the
Shoreham hotel, where General Lee was
quartered. Befoie the close It was
twice that size. It was after 9 before
he appeared on one of the small corner
balconies, accompanied by a committee
of the Union Veterans' Legion and a
Confederate Veterans' association,
which was Jointly in charge of the af
fair. There was a hurst of fireworks
from the neighboring houses, while
mounds of red, white and blue lights
llamed at Intervals along the street.
The crowd yelled itself hoarse calling
for Lee by name, and demanding a
speech. The speech was brief and so
much broken by applause that the
crowd caught probably little more than
Its general drift'. General Lee said:
"After all the speeches I have been
forced to make In the past two days, I
can hardly hope to make myself heard
over this great gathering. I can only
assure you that such a great demon
stration seems to me out of all pro
portion to the simple fact of my humble
presence here, and I am frank to say
I don't see that I deserve it, having
only tried to do my duty as an Ameri
can where circumstances placed me."
The crowd broke out afresh, and
there were yells: "That's it," "That's
what you did." Uenernl Lee continued:
"I have to thank vou most heartily
for this splendid endorsement of my
course. It is a thing that can hardly
come to a man more than once in a
lifetime, and it moves me more than
I can put in words."
"You can act pretty quick," cried a
man in the crowd, and then some one
yelled, "War, fight," and the cheering
drowned everything else.
"I have not come to talk war," con
tinued Lee, "but if war comes, in a
few days, or In a few years, the present
crisis has proved that It will find us a
united people, and the only contest will
bo as to who can carry the Hag farthest
and fastest. I want to thank my good
New York friends who have come so
promptly to the front tonight. It Is
only another evidence that New York
Is ready, as she has been In the past, to
stand by Virginia, and It the trial
comes I can assure you all that V11
ginla will be found standing shouldui
to Bhoulder with New York."
The speaking nnd music was followed
by a very brief reception, to which a
few score gained admittance, in the
rooms of Representative Connell, of
Pennsylvania.
Consul General Lee was before the
senate committee on foreign relations
for an hour late yesterday. He talked
freely with the committee In regard to
the conditions in Cuba, and especially
with reference to the destruction of the
Maine. He said that in his opinion
there was no room to doubt that the
destruction of tho vessel waB due to
Spanish agencies.
"Do you mean the Spanish authori
ties In Cuba?" he was asked by a mem
ber of the committee.
"I mean the Spanish officials," he re
plied, "but not General Illanco. I think
some of the omVlals were cognizant of
the plan to destiny the vessel, but I
do not believe that the captain gen
eral was."
General Lee said that he had no
knowledge of the reports that a mine
had been discovered by a diver under
the Montgomery while that vessel lay

health. A woman owe

live a life of wretchedness
herself, and unless her

puny and sickly.
Ill-health in a womanly
way may almost invari
ably be traced to weak
ness and disease of the
femine organs that are the '
vestibule of human life.
No woman can enjoy g
general health who is dra
down by continual pain
local weakness. irouDies ol tins descrip
tion utterly unfit her for wifehood and
motherhood. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Pre
scription gives health, strength, elasticity
and vigor to the special organs concerned.
It makes a woman strong and healthy in a
womanly way. It gives the nerves a rest
from pain and an opportunity to build up.
It makes motherhood safe and compara
tively easy. It tiansforuis weak, sickly,
despondent women into happy, healthy
wives and mothers.
Jas C'Hswell. Eiq . of Ocheltrec, Johnson Co.,

troubled with prolapsus, or 1 female weakness,'
for several years she was not able to do her
work, she had such bearing down pains and pain
in her back. Her periods wore irregular, vary
ing all thivway from two to six weeks. At those
times she would have fainting spells so bad that
1 thought she could not live. She was attended
by the best doctors in the country. They did
her no good and she grew worse all the lime. I

livery day, a dose. Once you start, you
can never stop them. That is the way with
some so-called remedies for constipation.
It is different with Dr. Pierce's Pleasant
Pellets. They are a positive, complete and
permanent cure for constipation and they
don't become a habit. One " Pellet " is a
gentle laxative and two a mild cathartic.
Druggists sell them. Nothing else is
"just as good."
It is a druggist's business to give you,
not to tell you, what you want.
