Philadelphia, April 8. The bond
given by the late William II. Slngerly
as president of the Chestnut Street Na
tional bank, by which he assumed per
sonal liability for the enormously ex
cessive loans and overdrafts which af
terward wrecked the bank, was made
public yesterday. Lawyers declare that
the bond la not worth the paper tt Is
written on.
United States District Attorney Beck
will probably go to Washington this
afternoon to confer with the attorney
general and the comptroller of the cur
rency regarding the affairs of the bank
and further proceedings. The missing
witness, Elliot, formerly bookkeeper of
the L to Z ledger, has not yet been lo
cated, though efforts are being made
to find him, his evidence being regarded
as lmportnnt.
"Why did you want to resign?"'
"I thought It was time to resign when
one man took all the money."
This question wan asked by Mr.
Beck in the hearing of the charges
against former Cashier William Steele,
of the Chestnut Street National bank,
and the significant answer was made
by former Director Upper, who was on
tho witness stand.
The sensational evidence brought out
in the hearing before United Btatfs
Commissioner Edmunds has led to a
general belief that even more startling
developments will result from the fur
ther Investigation next Thursday, to
which date the examination was ad
journed. The Inerpnse from year to year In the
loans to Mr. Slngerly and hlB allied In
terests was shown bv National Dank
