New York, March 31. President De
pow authorizes the following state
ment: "On April 20 Chauncey M. Dc
pew will rctlro from the presidency of
the New Tork Central and Hudson
Klver ltallroad company ami becomes
chairman of tho board of directors of
the New York Central and Hudson
ltlver, Lnke Shore, New York, Chicago
and St. Louis and tho Michigan Con
trol railroad. S. It. Calloway will suc
ceed Mr. Depew as president of tho
New York Central, and Mr. Ledyard
'will remain president of the Michigan
Central. Cornelius and William K.
Vnnderbllt will remain In the directo
ries. Tho presidents of tho Lake Shoro
and of the New York, Chicago and St.
Louis have not yet been chosen."
The Vnnderbllt system heretofore has
been handicapped In competition with
lines which run throuch under one
management between New York and
Chicago, like the Pennsylvania, the
Erie nnd the Baltimore and Ohio. Tho
New York Central, the Lake Shore, the
Michigan Central and the Nickel Plato
had no other union than a controlling
ownership In the stock bv the same
people. OIHclally they had no con
nection with each other, except that
Cornelius Vnnderbllt, being the chair
man of the board of directors of the
New York Central and the Michigan
Central, and William K. Vunderbllt of
the Lake Shore nnd Nickel Plate
boards, the harmonious relations of the
two brothers was a bond of union. Uy
this change the Messrs. Vnnderbllt re
tire from these chairmanships, though
they remain In the different directories
and continue their full and active In
terest In the property.
Mr. Depew, by becoming the chairman
of the board of directors of each of
these sejiarate roads, unites this olllce
In one person Instead of two. Through
him occupying this position Is secured
a unity of administration and opera
tion In all that relates to the general
trafllo of the systems ns exchanged be
tween the several lines. The Lake
Shore and Michigan Central and Nickel
Plate will have nnd maintain the samo
connection they have always had, be
cause they have all of them done a
great denl of business with lines other
than tho New York Central, but tho
New York Central Is placed on an
equality with the trafllc associations
and In the competition with through
business with tho lines which run
through under one control between
Chicago and New York.
For Mr. Depew, after thirty odd years
of service, it is recarded as a distinct
promotion and a recognition of his
ability and wisdom. Tho Messrs. Vnn
derbllt, by putting Mr. Depew In tho
official position which they have oc
cupied so lontr in their own practical
way, effect tho unltv of the admin
istration which they sought. It is be
lieved that this policy will add greatly
to the efllclencv of tho system In Its
service to the public. It does away
with the frictions which have fre
quently arisen between the presidents
of the several lines, because the chair
man of the several boards of directors
will be the arbiter through whom must
necessarily come a settlement of any
differences that may arise.
In conversation Mr. popew said that
the Messrs. Vnnderbllt felt that If they
should die the relations which hereto
fore existed between the several roads
might be broken up by antagonistic In
terests, Impairing the value of the
largo Investments which they had In
those properties.
Mr. Depew's services with tho Van-
derbllt system began with his appoint
ment In 1SCG as attorney for the Har
lem railroad. His duties were soon ex
tended to the Hudson ltlver road, and
he was elected a director In tho New
York Central in 1S74. In 1883 ho was
elected Becond vice president and gen
eral counsel of the New York Central,
He was elected president of the same
road In 188C, and has held the ofilce
ever since, in the interval ho was
elected a director in all the Vanderbllt
lines. These are: In the east, tho Bos
ton and Albany, the New York, New
Haven nnd Hartford and the New York
and New Knglnnd; In this state, tho
New York Central, the West Shore, the
Rome and Watertown, Ontario and
Western, Harlem, Geneva and Corn
ing and the Pine Creek and Beach
Creek; west of Buffalo, the Lake Shore,
the Michigan Central, the Nickel Plate,
the Canada Southern and the Big
Four; In the southwest, the Chesapeake
and Ohio; west of Chicago, the Chi
cago and Northwestern and the Chi
cago, St. Paul and Omaha.

I'hllndclphla, March 31. Before Unit
ed States Commissioner Henry II. Kd
munds yesterday William Steele, cash
ier of the Chestnut Street National
bank, who was arrested Tuesday night
charged with having knowingly made
fulse entries In the reports of the
bank's condition to the comptroller of
the currency, was given n hearing. At
the conclusion of the hearing Steele
was held In $10,000 bail for another
hearing today.
Mr. Steele was arrested Just as he
had alighted from his carrlnce at the
door of lils own home. IIo was de
sirous of seeing his family, and enter
ed, the deputies accompanying him.
Their errand could not bo concealed
from Mrs. Steele and the children, Rnd
there was a most affecting scene. The
children, very young, seemed under the
apprehension that they would never
again see their father, and Mrs. Steele
was deeply distressed. Deputy Foster
at lenuth took her nslde and told her
that if Mr. Steele had a friend wlio
could furnish ball ho would be back at
midnight to comfort them. The pris
oner was finally taken away, amid
tears, to Commissioner EdmundB'
home. There the $5,000 ball was fur
nished for Mr. Steele's appearance yes
terday. Through it all Mr. Steele, while !
evidently much chagrined at his arrest, !
preserved a quiet demeanor. At mid
night he was back home to comfort his
wife and children.
Today's hearing will be of the ut
most importance, and may be attended
with tho greatest consequences to
others connected with the defunct in
stitutions. When questioned yester
day United States District Attorney
Beck said:
'Until this arrest I have had no
power to compel the attendance of wit
nesses, or make a compulsory investi
gation. Now I have, anil propose to
make a thorough investigation of this
matter, so that, so far as Is possible,
no guilty man, If there bo others guilty
besides Steele, shall escape punish
ment. The public Interests impera
tively require this course, and while
It Is distasteful to pursue an inquiry
which may injuriously affect the good
name of the dead, yet, Injustice to tho
living, no other course seems possible.
I proposa to subpoena every one who
may have knowledge as to tho suspen
sion of tho bank.
"If any citizen has any Information
tending to Implicate any official or em
ploye of the bank he should submit it
to me at once. I cannot act without
facts. The public Interests Imperatively
require that no guilty man should es
cape In this matter, and 1 invoke the
aid of all who have anv knowledge to
help me reach the truth ns to this fail
ure, and I in tutn will spare no effort
to bring the guilty to punishment."
When questioned as to whether his
inquiry would extend to, tho Chestnut
Street Trust Mr. Heck replied: "I have
nothing to do with that institution. It
is not a national bank, but Is organized
under state laws, and I ani powerless
to take any action, or mnke any Inves
tigation with respect to It."
Assistant District Attorney McCullen
was asked whether any arrests are at
present contemplated.
"Not at the cresent moment," was
the non-committal answer.
"When will any arrests be mado?"
"It depends upon what the evidence
at the hearing of Mr. Steele discloses.
Until that hearing takes place, how
ever, I can say no action looking to
additional arrests will be taken."

A STATE PRISON SENSATION.

Trenti.n, Mnrrh 31. The office on
duty at the New Jersey State prison
were thrown Into consternation last
night by a report that two Inmates of
the prison had scaled the wall. A car
riage at the time was seen driving
away from the prison, which was sup
posed to have contained the escaped
convicts. An ord?r to halt was Ignored,
and Officer George Smith fired five
shots. Tile horse was killed and the
inmates of the carriage escaped, but
whether any of them were hit Is un
known. Subsequently a count of the
inmates of the prison showed that none
of the prisoners were missing.
The horse and carriage were Identi
fied by a local liveryman as one he had
hired to two young men, but the hats
which were lost by the men running
away are not those belonging to tho
men who hired the carriage. It Is be
lieved that the horse and carriage was
stolen from those who hired it, and
this accounts for the failure of the
men to stop when ordered by the officers.

Washington, March 81. All Ferouck
Bey made a formal call on the presi
dent yesterday and presented his cre
dentials as the envoy extraordinary
and minister plenipotentiary of the sul
tan of Turkey to the United States.
He was elegantly attired in rich robes
and displayed itjmerous jewels and
decorations. He was accompanied by
Secretary of State Sherman, by whom
the formal presentation was made. The
new minister arrived here a few days
ago, and kept his movements so secret
that his pr.' 1'iice helo was not Bren-
rally known.
Disease is a great and treacherous ocean.
Man ever stands upon its shore and gazes
out over its calm surface without a thought
of danger. It licks his feet it advances
and recedes almost playfully but all the
same it will crack his bones and eat him,
and wipe the crimson foam from its jaws
as if nothing had liappend. as it has been
doing ever since the world began.
A man who carelessly saunters along the
shore of the insatiate sea of disease, will
some day encounter a great storm in the
form of some fatal malady and will be en
gulfed. Hecnuse a man does not have to go
to bed when he suffers from a trivial indi
gestion, because lie does not have to give
up work when he gets nervous and cannot
sleep at night, because he can still force
down an unsatisiactory meal when lie is
suffering from loss of appetite, because by
strong effort he can add a column of figures
with aching head is no reason that these
disorders are trilling or to be neglected.
They are the warnings of serious sickness.
A man who promptly needs tnem, ana re
sorts to the right remedy, will speedily re
cover his usual health. The man who neg
lects them will find that he is in the grip
of consumption, some nervous disorder, or
some other diead malady, due to improper
or insufficient nutrition. Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery is the best of
all medicines for men and women who suf
fer in this way. It restores the lost appe
tite, facilitates the flow of digestive juices,
invigorates the liver, purifies and enriches
the blood and tones and builds up the
nerves, it cures ox per cent, ot an chronic,
bronchial, throat and lung afft ctions, and
is an unfailing remedy for nervous prostra
tion. Medicine dealers sell it.
