counsel for Luetgert. appeared before
Judge Gary yesterday afternoon und

the defense until Feb. 19 to prepare

Dreyfus nffalr. The presiding Judpe

General Gonse and Colonel Henry gave
explanations of the Indiscretions of
Colonel Plcqunrt, who had knowledge
of some of the secret papers of the war
otllce. General Pellleux, on the wit
ness stand, pnld It was time the truth
became known. Ho then proceeded to
relate the story of the Ksterhnzy In
quiry, and pnld that M. Mathleu Drey
fus and M. Scheurer-Kestner both nd
tnltted they could not prove the charges
against Mnjor Esterhazy. Pellleux
vigorously denounced Plcquart for "di
vulging nil espionage affair to an out
sider." General Pellleux was about to
refer to the Dreyfus case when the pre
siding Judge gently interposed his usunl
veto, nnd the minister did not Insist.
M. Dtipuy. the former premier, was
then railed, ond M. Laborle began to
question him regarding the enso of
Dreytus, which the presiding Judge
vetoed, whereupon M. Laborle an
nounced that he would throw up the
examination of M. Dupuy and other
former ministers, as the rulings of the
presiding Judge made It fruitless.
M. Thevenett, n former minister of
Justice, who was next examined, said
he could easily understand how M.
Zola's mind was exercised by the "veil
ed lady" story. M. Zola, he added, had
ncted In good faith, for complete light
had net been thrown upon this matter,
and II. Zola's was not the only mind
troubled.
AH efforts to bring In the Dreyfus
case were overruled by the presiding
Judge, and thus far Zola has been
given no opportunity to substantiate
Ills charges.
