Columbus, O., Jnn. 5. The political future of Senator Ilanna la certainly In a closely poised balance. While there are now reported to be only nine dissenters among the 80 Republican members, one In the senate aud eight In the house, yet the really doubttul list Is limited to two or three. Some of the dissenting Republicans are not likely ever to become reconclled'to Sen ator Ilanna. They have burned their bridges behind them, and openly admit It. Representatives Griffith of Union nnd Joyce of Guernsey, who voted with the "combine" on the orpanlzatlon of the house, stated today that they would vote for Senator Ilanna. This gave Ilanna 51 In the house and 17 In the senate, a total of 71, or 2 short of the necessary majority. Droste, of Hamil ton, who voted for Boxwell for speaker, announced at the time that he would Bupport Jcptha Gerrard, a silver He publlcajMtor senator, so that the net gain foBIlanna to date over the vote on the organization was only one. The Ilanna men say they expect to get the votes of Scott, of Fulton, nnd Ilutan, of Carroll, who are Instructed for Hanna and voted with the "combine" on the organization. On the other hand, the "combine" managers say that Scott and Hutan will remain with them to the finish, and that they expect to get Snider, of Greene, nnd Hedkay, of Highland, who voted for Hoxwell for speaker. The doubtful members are being offered their choice of chairmanships and given opportunity to make all other selections they want. The power of the organization of the house Is cer tainly being used to the greatest pos sible advantage, and Its influence is not to be underestimated in connection with the support of the state adminis tration. The committee appointments and other patronage are being held back In anticipation of gaining sev eral votes on the senatorial ballot. Late last night a change came over the condition of affairs. The Hanna managers lost the two doubtful mem- mers that they had galnyil during the aay, so mat mere is now no material change from that of Monday, when the house stood 56 to 53 against Hanna. This would give the senator only 70 votes on Joint ballot or three less than enough to elect. In connection with the change of Representative Griffith back to the antl-Hanna camp sensational reports are In circulation. In these dlspat?.ies yesterday was an account of the Hanna workers spending Sunday night with Representative Griffith, and of him sending at 3 a. m. for his wife to come from the Great Southern hotel to the Neal House to join him In a conference with the Hanna men. At 8 a. in. the Kurtz men saw airs. Griffith and the all night work of the Hanna men was undone just before her husband went to the state house on Monday morning to qualify as a speaker pro tern, with the other candidates of the "combine." After the legislature was organized Mr. Griffith had another night of con ferences on both sides of the sena torial case, and yesterday morning, It is said, he gave the Hanna men a written pledge over his own name that he would vote for the senator. Later In the day he was seen by the oppo nents of Senator Hanna, and last night he gave out a statement In which he declares: "I have, since learning the particulars In the Indignities heaped upon my wife Monday morning, reached the conviction that I would be untrue to my manhood should I cast my vote for a man who either uses or employs such methods, and shall resent the In dignities and Insults heaped upon my self and friends, and also do a service for my state and country, by voting for a Republican other than Mr. Hanna for United States senator." In holding their men in line the "combine" Is having trouble with some of the 05 Democratic members. It Is believed that Mayor McKlsson will give way to Mr. ivurtz for the Bhort term for senator, while oovernor Bush nell has all along been regarded as the candidate for the long term. Several radical free silver Democrats are not satisfied with Kurtz and Bushnell. and if they are to vote for Republicans they want them with pronounced sil ver records, like that oi Gerrard and others that are named. Some of the Democratic members Insist that the breach Is bo wide and deep now be tween the Republicans that John R. McLean or some other free silver Dem ocrat could be elected over Hanna. The announcement by the Republi cans that they would have no Joint senatorial caucus tonight or at any time previous to the balloting for sen ator will compel all to continue In this guerilla warfare for another week, but with the result depending on the ac tlon of two or three doubtful mem bers neither side could show Its hand without exposing the recruits or de serters to a terrific lire for at least a week. The senate and huose will ballot sep arately next Tuesday for senator. The tenate will stand 10 to 17 against Ilanna by Senator Durke voting with the Democrats. The house on Monday stood 56 to 53. It Is now 57 to 52 against Ilanna. This will settle the contest If the "combine" In both houses can con centrate on any other candidate against Hnnna, and when the two houses meet on the following day, Wednesday, Jan. 12, to canvass in Joint assembly the vote of the pre vlous day, as cast by each branch separately, there would be nothing to do except to announce the total result of 73 to 70 against Hannn, The "comblnr:" Is charging that Sen ator Hnnna is In such desfierate straits as to be forced to "swap horses" while crossing the stream, owing to the Re publicans deciding to hold no caucus, They also charge that he has been an cx-Benator since' the legislature met on Monday, as Senator Hanna was up pointed when Secretary Sherman went Into the cabinet, to serve " until the next meeting of the Jeglslature." For centuries this relentless disease was considered incurable. It is now known to be distinctly curable. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery cures 98 per cent, of all cases of consumption, bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis and diseases of the air-passages. It has stood the test for thirty years. It acts directly on the blood, nourishing it with the life-giving qualities of the food. It tears down old, half-dead tissues and builds up new ones in all parts of the body. Through the blood it acts directly on the lungs, driving out all impurities and dis ease germs. It soothes the cough, but facilitates expectoration. It deepens the breathing, supplying the system with life giving oxygen. It stimulates the appetite, facilitates the flow of digestive juices, in vigorates the liver and tones and builds up the nerves. It is the great blood-maker and flesh-builder. It does not make flabby flesh like cod liver oil, but firm, muscular, healthy tissues.
