Gaslight company and was elected Its
president. He was also president of
several savings banks. In 1871 he v. as
elected to the New Jersey senate by
an unusually large majority, and served
for three years. In 187G he was a presi
dential elector, when the state went
for Tilden by a large majority. In 1377
he was elected a United States sena
tor to succeed F. P. Frellnhuysen, and
served three terms.

a statement to the newspapers In
which he takes exception to the state
ments made over the firm's signa
ture finding fault with the Dlngley
tariff bill so far as it affeoted the
Roeblings' industry. The original
statement declared that the employee
of Roebilng had been cheated in the
passage of the Dlngley tariff bill, and
that next time they would probably
vote the Democratic ticket. Colonel
Roebilng said that the first statement
only represented the individual views
of his brother, F. W. Roebilng. Colo
nel Roebilng said further that he was
satisfied with the Dlngley tariff bill,
and that their mill Is busier than ever
before. F. W. Roebilng, on the other
hand, said he had authority to sign
the firm's signature, and that Colonel
Roebilng only spoke for himself.

Timmons, who shot and killed his
wife's stepfather, William Hlnton, fa
tally wounded his wife, Elizabeth Tim
mons, and shot Mrs. John Hinton in
the shoulder near Ednor, Montgomery
county, on Thursday, was found dead
yesterday In Baltimore county, two
miles eaBt of Elllcott City. He waB dis
covered lying In a clump of bushes,
with a bullet hole through the right
side of his head. Mrs. Timmons died
in a Washington hospital last night.

and Bert Wines, two members of a
gang that has been terrorizing the In
habitants of Meigs and surrounding
counties, were arrested near here under
sensational circumstances. Hysell was
standing by the side ot MIbs Georgia
Mantel at the home of 'Squire Long,
awaiting the words that would have
made them man and wife, when the
officers appeared on the scene and
made prisoner the wouid-be bride
groom before any resistance could Ije
offered. Wines, who was a guest at
the Intended wedding, started to run,
but was captured after leading the offi
cers a spirited chase. Rewards aggre
gating $2,000 have been offered for the
capture and convlotion of these two
men.

Chattanooga, Tenn., Oot. 9. The in
vestigation of the Bohannon car gang
robberies by the Whitfield county (Ga.)
grand Jury has brought forth some sen
sational disclosures in the town of Dal
ton, 40 miles south of here. The Jury
has discovered that the gang has stolen
over $100,000, and has been working sys
tematically for years.
In addition to finding 13 indictments
against each member of the gang the
Jury has found indictments against the
following leading merchants of Dal
ton for working in complicity with the
gang and receiving stolen goods: John
Bender, member of council; Drew M.
Peeples, member of council; T. N. Pee
ples, Jr., G. W. Gannon and Anderson
GIddlngs.
The plan of the robbers was to go out
on the railroads and break Into f-ars.
Before reaching Dalton the goods were
ITirown out and carried away by con
federates. The goods were afterward
sold by the gang toj the Dalton mer
chants. The work continued for years.
Superintendent Vaughn, of the South
ern railway, put detectives on the oase,
who played tramps. Joined the gang
and iocated the robbers.

' read to the Jury. In these letters Mrs.
' Atkinson asserted that Owens had not
piild for his land. The letters show
date subsequent to that of the receipt.
William Worlman testified that Mrs.
Atkinson, about two years ago, pro
posed to sell him land belonging to the
, Camden estate, and wrote and dellver
i ed to him the receipts for the purchase
money, dating the receipts hack to the
time prior to Judge Camdeh's death.

j examination. The defense endeavored
j to ahow that he was and Is in the em
ploy of the prosecution for the pur
' pose of giving and rfffnting up evidence.

witness was not materially weakened.

Gustave Muller has surrendered to the
city police, confessing the murder of
his wife and child. As proof of the
truth of his confession he produced
from his pocket four human ears. The
police, on searching his house, found
the two bodies. Muller subsequently
confessed that he had also killed his
parents, mutilating their remains in the
same manner, and then he made the
astounding statement that he had
similarly disposed of 14 wives, whom
he had married in various parts of the
world.
