Tub RE are many admirers of the

the result of each day's contests on

pay the penalty.
Chaikman Jonks is right in liis
intimation that the indorsement of
the Oliieugo platform by the New
York Democrats would be bad poli
ties. ,In fact, as a matter'of politics,
the indorsement of that platform by
anybody, In any state, at any time,
would be bad, and our Democratio
friends In this state now realize the
error of their way at the late Head
ing convention. The kicks and ouffs
-which Jones' friend Bryan got last
November from the people for Indors
ing that platform are an eloquent
admonition in the future to let it
ulone. If the people hnd the work
to do now they would hit Bryan
harder.
THE LUETGERT TRIAL
l'hc I'rlnoner'B Counsel Promise Some
Startling Development.
Chicago, 8pt.21. The direct evidence
In the I.uetffert case Is In, and the state
has rested. The last witness ot the
prosecution was Mrs. Louise Miller
Johnson, who testfecl that upon one
occasion she saw Luotgert In a ruffe
chase his wife out of the house. The
sausage maker, the witness said, was
armed with a revolver. He called hlii
wife names and threatened to shoot,
but did not. When she left the stand
State Attorney Deneen said: "If the
court please, the state rests,"
There was a general movement In the
crowded room as the spectators glanced
toward Luetgert and his counsel. Luet-
gert leaned forward and whispered to
ex-Judge Vincent. The latter arose
and made a formal motion that the
case be taken from the Jury on the
ground that the state had failed to
make out a ease. Judge Tuthlll prompt
ly overruled this motion without ar
gument. Then ex-Judge Vincent stated
that owing to the lateness of the hour
he would like to postpone his opening
address to the Jury until today. There
was no objection to this, and an ad
Jounment was taken.
It required Just 20 days for tho pre
sentation of the evidence of the pros
ecution. Ex-Judge Vincent said last
night that the defense would present
Its side of the oase In Just half that
time. "My address to the Jury In open
ing will be short and directly to the
point," lie said. "We deny the murder
the corpus delectl has not been
proved, as the law requires, and this
fact cannot be assumed nor Inferred
from such testimony ns has been pre
sented here. We will explain away all
the evidence brought out here by the
police department after months of In
vestigation and manipulation. I do not
cure to give out In full our defense un
til we get btarted, but I promise some
startling developments before we are
through."

PRISONER'S PLAN FAILED.
Tho Scnrrli l.lrrlit Prevented a During
P.-fnjii" From Prison.
Trent r., Sept. 22. John Meyers made
a dating but unsuccessful attempt to,
escape from the Now Jersey state
prison early In the morning. Meyers,
by clever work, escaped from his cell
to the roof of the wing in which ho
was located. He got as far as the ,
roof of the portico over the main en
trance, where he was captured, as a re
sult of an alarm, given by one of the
deputies In the watch tower. Meyers
had been planning to escape for a long
tlmo. He was located in one of the
old wings, which have no steel bar
cells. With the assistance of a knife
he dug a hole In the wait of his cell
near the top and climbed throught this
to the attic, where, with a saw which
he made from a knife, ho cut through
tho rafters.
Meyers said afterwards that he had
worked all night, and that ho would
have made his escape before morning
had It not been for the searchlight lo
cated In one of tho towers and used
every half hour for making a survey
of the roofs and yard of the prison.
When not In uso tho light points dU

Forjf7 .-pose of deceiving the wing
watchman Meyers put in his bed the
bricks taken from tho wall, and with
a loaf of bread which ho had soaked
In water he made the Image of a man's
head, so that when the watchman
passed he would think Meyers was In
bed. The prisoner had also fixed him
self up with a pair of trousers made of
his bed clothing, and a 25 foot rope,
which he made from a blanket.
Meyers was sentenced to seven years
In November, 1891, from Union county,
for bieaUIug and entering.
ONE OF TWO WAYS.
Tho bladder was croatcd for one purpose,
namely, a reccptaclo for tho urine, and as
such'it is not liable to any form of diseaso ex
cept by ono of two ways. Tho first way is
from imperfect action of tho kidneys. Tbo
second way is from caroloss local treatment of
other diseases.
CHIEF CAUSE.
Unhealthy urine from unhealthy kidneys
is tbo chief causo of bladdor troubles. So
tho womb liko tho bladder, was croatcd for
ono purpose and if not doctored too much
is not llablo to weakness or diseased, except
in raro cases. It Is situated back of and very
close to tlio bladder, therefore any pain,
diseaso or inconvenience manifested in tho
kidnoys, back, bladder or urinary passngo is
often by mistake attributed to femalo weak
ness or womb troublo of some sort. Tho
error Is easily mado and may bo as easily
avoided. To find out correctly, set you
urino aside for twenty-four hours; a sedi
ment or settling indicates kiduey or bladder
troublo. Tho mild and tbo extraordinary
ellectof Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Koot, tho groat
kidney, liver and bladder remedy is soon
realized. If you need a medicine you should
have tho best. At druggists fifty cents and
ono dollar. You may bavo a samplo bottle
and pamphlet, both sent frco by mail.
