In Sohuylklll's temporary loan account, to

certain county officials, is still tho one topic
of conversation among i' oee on "the hill."
It will be remembered that the Taxpayers'
Association had already entered suit against
Phil. J. Connell, the former chief clerk, hut
notwithstanding that fact tho three County
Commissioners appeared heforo Justice Fister
and made affidavit to a warrant against
Conuell which Includes tho following Infor
mation :
"Penjotially appeared before me, Frank
UeuU. John Martin and Charles Meyers,
county commissioners in and for the county ;
or scnuylkiii, who being nuiy sworn accord-

the year 1800, Philip J. Comioil was tho cliief
clerk in the office of tho county commis
sioners mid had in his custody tho county
seal ; that on the 8tli day of June, I860, thn
said Phillip J. Connell attested to an alleged
minute as to a loan of $80,000 from the Safe
Deposit Bank, of Pottsvillo, which loan was
a renewal of former loans aud a creation of a
nuw loan for $S,000, whereas in the fact
and in truth the only correct luiuuto ho
could havo attosted to was one iwssed
June 0, 1806, that called for tho renewal
of tho $25,000 loan thou existing with
said banks; that as an officer, employe
and nsttnt of the county of Schuylkill,
tho said Philip J. Connell did with intent to
defraud, falsify tho minute of Juno 0, to ob
tain the said fo.OOO over aud above the paper
then in hank to bo renewed ; that the min
ute of Juno 8, was fraduleut making, signing,
iiinrlnir nml nuhlishins a written instru
ment with intent to defraud tho County of
SohuyUIll, wliicli hasdono to tho prejudice
of tho rights of tho County of Schuylkill,
that by such fradulent making, signing, ut

nifiiit. to wit: tho nlloced minute of June S,
1MB. tho said Phllln J. Conuell feloniously
obtained possession of $5,000 and did steal,

provided."
Tho ahovo information was sworn to last
Tuesday, but has just been given out for pub
lication. Mr. Connell is at Atlantic City, and
a constable left for that place to servo tho
warrant.
It is thought that a hearing in tho case
will bo had Friday or Saturday, when Mr.
Conuell arrives from tho seashore
Tho County Commissioners have recently
passed a resolution that hereafter all notes
issued for moneys borrowod be made payable
to the County Treasurer, so that proceeds of
all such notes shall bo paid direct to that
official and there he no further opportunity
of any discrepancies in tho nmounts paid and
tho amounts received into tho treasury.
In conversation with a reporter Mr. Kentz
says ho is woll satisfied who got tho money
who tho guilty party is. He further said ;
"I don't want to charge anybody with the
crime until it is proven. Wo havo proof of a
false statement having hceu made and that
the records wore falsified."
Tho oilicials apparently feel perfectly at
case and court a thorough investigation.
Thoy realize that they, or their bondsmen,
will havo to mako good for any mistakes or
defalcation on the part of tho clorks."
Tho friends of Controller Severn havo no
fears of tho result, so far as that official is
concerned. Uis connection with tho suits
instituted is merely formal, becauso of his
position as County Controller, and in order
that ho may submit his books during the
investigation.
