C Sevon, and prob- bly ulKht, Uvea were lost In an ex plosion whloh took place Inst evening lurlriR a fire In the Northwestern grain elevator, nt Cook and West Water itrcetH. Three of the dead are firemen the body of another fireman in thought be burled In the ruins of the ele vator) und three people were blown into the Chicago river. Prom the fcirr. with which the explosion swept the spot on which they were standing It Is certain they must have been In stantly killed. Slither the bursting of boiler or tho oxploslon of mill dust caused the awful havoo. The three firemen who were killed by the falling; walls of the elevatot were: Jacob J. Schnur, John J. Coogan, Jacob 8. Strainer. The Injured are: Charles II. Con way, fireman, burned about face and hands nnd body crushed, may die; Chief Dennis Swonle, right foot crush ed, loft arm wrenched and painfully burned; Fire Marshal Campion, burned about face; Lieutenant Smith, both legs crushed; Lieutenant W. H. Bartlett, leg crushed; Assistant Engineer Ben jamin Blanchard, badly bruised; John Smith, injured by debris; William McQutre, 15 years old, both feet crush ed; Thomas Englc. plpemtin, cut about face and hands and Internally Injured; Ignatius Bond, cut by falling glass; Captain John J. Evans, Btruck by de bris and rendered unconscious, con dition serious; William Hanley, pipe man, cut In head; William Thompson, hit by falling glass; C. V. Walter, knocked down by the explosion nnd In jured about the spine; John Hcntz, struck by falling beam and skull frac tured; James McGulre, leg fractured. Besides these dozens of firemen and passersby were more or less cut and bruised by glass and flying debris, Jo seph Lacey, Frank C. Halley, Captain Martin Lacey, Lieutenant John J. Mil ler, Captain William Itooney, John Evans, Harry Kugleman, William Schubert, John Hassey, Lieutenant Smith, Lieutenant Frank Donagan. Captain John Evans, Captain Falvey and Lieutenant Frank Nlgg, all fire men, were more or less badly Injured. The origin of the blaze Is believed to havo been In the vicinity of the bollei house. Accumulated dust, as dry and Inflammable as gunpowder, that had been piling up for years formed a ready means for the fire. It spread with great rapidity, and then came terrific explosion, completing the work of scattering the flro throughout tho entire structure. Just as tho firemen were getting Into position for advantageous work, and nearly all the members of Engine 3 were mounting ladders and bringing leads of hose to play on the Interior from the upper windows, there came roar that could be heard for half a mile, the roof was raised high In the air and the walls came down with a crash. Tho force of the explosion was so great that the eastern wall was hurled Into tho river, the west wall was tumbled down upon the heads of the unfortunate men below and the roof was torn Into mighty fragments and distributed for blocks around. Every window In tho vicinity of the elevator was shattered by the concussion, doz ens of persons were struck by flying debris and several small fires resulted from falling timbers that were still In flames. At Jefferson street and Car roll avenue, many blocks distant, great burning masses of wreckage fell upon four wagons loaded with hay nnd set them In flames. Tho elevator was of composite con struction, the lower portion being of brick and the upper part of frame cov ered with corrugated Iron. The ex' plosion caused a perfect bombardment of flying bricks and sheets of Iron at almost white heat, leaving little of the building save a frame work of wood and iron surrounding a great pile of blazing wheat. The explosion stunned, for a moment, tho police and the firemen, but they quickly rallied to help those who had been hurt. Dozens of met! lay Injured In the withering wheat, some serl ously harmed and others In the throes of death. It was dangerous work to get them out, but It was gallantly and quickly done, and all of the slightly Injured were removed. The dead were. for tho time, left where they lay. No man. could reach their bodies and live. Tho flro was most difficult to control, as the clovator was surrounded by a number of small buildings, which wore continually catching Are. The total loss Is estimated at $300,000, which Is fully covored by Insurance. "I always rccommoud Dr. Fowler's Ext. of Wild Strawberry in cases of summer com plaints and bavo novor known It to fail. Bottled up! Whether In the form of pill powder or liquid, the doctor's prescription for blood diseases is always the same mercury or potash. These drugs bottle up the poison and dry it up in the system, but they also dry up the marrow in the bones at the same time. The suppleuess and elasticity of the joints give way to a stiffness, the lack ing pains of rheumatism. The form gradually bends, the bones ache, while decrepitude and helplessness prema turely take possession of the body, and it is but n short step to n pair of crutches. Then comes falling of the hair and decay of the bones, a con dition truly horrible. Contagious Mood Poison the curse of mankind is the most horrible of all diseases, and has nl ways baffled the doctors. Their pot ash and mercury bottle up the poison, but it always breaks forth again attack ing some delicate organ, frequently the mouth nnd throat, filling them with eating sores. S.S.S., is the only known cure for this disease. It is guar anteed purely vege table, and one thousand dollars reward is offered for proof to the contrary. It never fails to cure Contagious Mood Poison, Scrofula, Eczenin, Rheumatism, Cancer, or any other disease of the blood. If you have a blood disease, take a remedy which will not injure you. BUT SIXTY-ONE SECONDS APART Tho Ilnc Wnx For tlir Goolot Clip nnd the Dlotntioc, Xlilrty-olght Mlloo. IVw Made In a Llttlo Ovtr Four Hours. Newport, It. I., Aug. 6. Royal Phelps Carroll's yacht, Navahoe, won the Qoe let cup for sloops yesterday by defeat ing Percy Chubb's Vigilant In not only the most Interesting race ever sailed for one of the emblems, but In what was probably the finest contest ever sailed between the big sloops In Ameri can waters. Vigilant led at the start, but Navahoe turned the first mark ahead and kept her lead until within three miles of the finish, when Vigilant passed her. Only 2fi feet seemed to sep arate the boats as they rushed across the line, which was not enough to save Vigilant the race, and Navahoe won by 4 minutes, 21 seconds, corrected time. The course was the old one to Block Island, with a long leg to West Island, and a short reach to the finish, a dis tance of 38 miles, and the boats made It In a little over four hours. The run to Block Island was nearly dead before the wind, and In order to get better position Vigilant crossed Navahoe's bow and set her spinnaker. All the way down Navahoe kept pulling down Vlgl lant's lead, and both boats a mile from the first mark appeared nearly even, although running wide apart. It was discovered that the mark had oapslaed, so a new raft was set, a quarter of a mile to the eastward. This favored Navahoe, and taking In her spinnaker and Jibing she rounded It at 1:07:09. Vigilant, while undoubtedly ahead Just before this, was 30 seoonds behind the mark. Rounding It she started after Navahoe. Instead of keep ing a good rap full, VIgllant's skipper Immediately began to pinch her. But Captain Crocker gave Navahoe a good full, and she romped along In fine style. As this leg was a long and short hitch Navahoe was kept on the port tack until 3:10, when, with Vigilant to wind ward, but considerably astern, she tacked to starboard. The boats kept on for half an hour on this tack, when Vigilant again tacked to port. Then It was seen thnt the erratic steering had done Its work, for she could not weather Navahoe. The latter then tacked on her rival's weather, and both boats stood for tho second mark. Just before rounding the big balloon Jib was hoisted and Navahoe romped away for home, well within her time limit. Vigilant was 30 seconds behind. Then began one of the most exciting finishes seen for many a day. With the lightship only GO miles away Vigi lant started to get by Navahoe, and make up the five minutes necessary to win. She did the former, but fell short of the latter. Such a sight as the fin ish of those two boats has never been seen In these waters, for both carried a cloud of canvass. Strange to relate, not one of the dozen of the finest Amer ican steam yachts which were at the finish uttered n sound as tho two boats rushed across the line. It was a grand race, without the enthusiasm. Navahoe won by one minute and one second, actual, and four minutes and 21 seconds, corrected. Today the con tost between the yachts will be re newed, In the run to Vineyard Haven, with the accompaniment of all the rest of the yachts In the fleet. nousehold Necessity.
