John II. Smith, United States com

now at Dyea waiting to get over the

There Is no truth In the report that
the Northern Pacific company has re
fused to grant leave of absence to thelt
employes. Hallway officials say they
have plenty of men to handle all their
business. The street car companies,
however, are having some trouble, as
many of their employes have gone to
the Klondike country.

Ilonndary of tho Gold Fields.
Washington, Aug. G. A careful ex
amination of all of the reliable charts
and maps made far enough back in
date to be free from suspicion of In
fluence of the recent heavy gold finds
has convinced government officials that
so far as tho Klondike fields, as de

An Hfoplnir Woman's Fortuife,
San Francisco, Aug. E. In IMS a
young Irish minister named Thomas
Hogan and a woman supposed to be
hi. wife settled In Calaveras county.
Several years ago Hogan died, and the
woman married John C. Scribner, of
San Andreas. When Scribner died he
left his widow In comfortable circum
stances. She died recently, and her
estate, valued at $30,000, was distributed
Tuesday In Judge Coffey's court. IJy
her will the bulk of IF was left to her
"nephews and neloee, Elizabeth, George,
Jane nnd Samuel Barnes, ot Clifton,
Yorkshire, England." It has been
learned, however, that Mrs. Scribner
eloped with Hogan from England years
ago, and that she left her property to
her own children by letral marriage,
but not wishing to raise the veil that
had hidden her past from them, she
described them In her will as her
"nephews and nelces."

riitladelphta, Aug. 5. A naphtha ex
plosion In the chemical works of the
Barrett Manufacturing company. In
Frankford, yesterday, caused a clan
gorous and disastrous fire. Thirteen
firemen and two employes were badly
burned and scalded.
Two men at work In the building.
Robert Gettle and John Garrlsh. first
observed the danger from six large
naphtha tatfks In the room, nettle
pointed out to his companion that thc
nil In two of them was bulling to the
bubbling point and likely to explode.
The men started for the door. Hardly
had they reached It when the two
tanks In rapid succession blew up, and
the entire building containing them, a
brick structure 100 feet long by 48 feet
deep, was a mass of (lames. Both were
frightfully burned and scalded.
The flames spread with fearful rapid
ity, but notwithstanding the danger
that threatened the entire block of
buildings, the firemen believed that by
n. role exertions they might succeed in
confining the more destructive blaze
to the structure In which the explosion
took place. Fifteen fire companies were
on the ground, and the firemen were
distributed around the plant In such a
way that their combined efforts would
do efficient service. In the yard at
tached to the refining house were ISO
barrels of naphtha, each containing 100
gallons, and It was their immediate
effort to prevent the flames from reach
ing them.
The walls had been blown out of the
rennlng house, however, and the blasts
of flame shot out In every direction.
The fiery rivulets were rushing along
the ground and licking around the bar
rels of explosive oil In the open space.
It was not In human power to check
this flood of liquid fire, and the fire
men beat a retreat. Many of them
were unhappily too late. Ono after an
other tho naphtha barrels blew up.
Bach explosion was like tho discharge
of a cannon. As the force accumulated
the barrels exploded In batteries.
Most of the firemen managed to es
cape, but many who had been In the
storage yard among the barrels, and
who were retreating from the pending
explosions, were caught In the darting
flames and struck by the flying Iron
and stone and brick work that followed
each explosion. Their companions
carried them to places of safety and
had them conveyed to the hospital.
After the explosions had ceased and the
danger therefrom abated, the firemen
succeeded In confining the fire to the
Immediate vicinity of tho refining
house.
The names of the burned and Injured
firemen are as follows; William Mc-
Dade, Samuel Cook, Samuel White,
Fred Hampshire, Aaron Knight, James
NevIIng, John Dufrleld, James Itldg
wny, Charles D. Myers, Charles Mil
ler, John Mnlr, Thomas O'Dalr, Jacob
Leonard. None nre expected to die,
but several may be disfigured by the
burning oil. The loss Is estimated at
$20,000.
