A story of Ihe hardships encountered on the trail from Dyea to Dawson City Is told In two letters received by Mrs. Julln Cook, of this city, from her husband, Charles Cook, now In Dawson City, and who was more than two months on the road. One letter was written In Sheep Camp, at tho foot of Chlloot I'ass, and about 17 miles from Dyea. The party had been It days In cover ing this 17 miles, and were almost worn out when the letter wns written. Cook says In his letter, which Is dated April 12: "We have been paoklng our goods over since the Ilrst of the month, when we left Dyea. We carried them from mountain to mountain, traveling in cessantly book and forth, till we now have the 1,200 or more pounds all here, Tho mnnnlnlliB fflf nldAtifir nn wo tiro- gress, and 50 pounds at a time are now too much far me to carry. Both my reet have given out, ana in eacn leg have a wound the size of a dollar and a quarter of an Inch thick, due to the friction of one leg against the other as I scattered under my load. I have been lying In the tent here for two days, unable to get any further. Others are faring no batter, however, as there Is a fearful blizzard raging nbove us In the pass. Tomorrow we shall try to start afresh. May aod help us over! Most of the travelers have their bag- gage carried by Indians, but you know that such a privilege was not for us. On every side the snow Is from six to eight feet deep, and the sled tum bles from side to side, going over a rock only to Bllde down upon our tired bruised bodies, giving us an extra blow as It passes on. Still we are mounting higher and higher, and not a word of complaint Is heard. It seems to me that ono watches tho other, wonder ing how ho stands the fearful journey. Right opposite the tent there is n mountain about 15,000 feet high and 400 feet wide. Perhaps It hides other and more terrible travels from us. In tho other letter, written In Daw son City on June 12, Cook tells of the graves that mark the trail from Dyen to the Klondike, the resting places of those who succumbed to the hardships. He says: "At last! At laBtl We reached here today. What wo have lived through I will not trust to pen and paper. The many little crosses on the roaa here they count up over a hundred speak only too plainly of the innumerable dangers of this terrible Journey. Let us rather pass over our experiences In all silence, for surely we are fortunate to have reached here. mt. nn...n n tli nnM Htll.nel thnltrfll XliC llCtVO UL LUC (U1U OttllVCDj lliUUrill I feared it might be, Is not exaggerated. We were In a great hurry to get here, and now learn that for a month work can't be begun In the mines. Although the roses and the most beautiful ilowers are bloom- Ing, still we can dig down but a few Inches without striking ground frozen hard as a rock. If you will pack up and eave Portland at once, and bring up grub enuugh to last three of us one year, we will give you a nair interest In the biggest thing you ever struck. As you know, I am an old miner and know what I say. My new partner and I have each got $10,000 piled away In a sack. Thorntown, Ind., July 31. The Chi cago express on the Cleveland, Cincin nati, Chicago and St. Louis railroad was wrecked here yesterday. There was a deliberate plot to wreck the train, as a coupling pin had been driven into the switch so as to hold It open and throw the fast train from Chicago to Cincinnati off the track as It reached this point. The engine and tender, the mall, express and baggage cars were thrown from the track and wore wrecked. The coaches and Wag ner sleeping cars remained on the track. Seth Wlnslow, of Clreensburg, Ind., the engineer, anil B. Crlckmore, of In diana polls, the fireman, were killed out right. The Injured are Henry Pljbe, Cleveland, who was badly scalded and will die, and Charles Cavenlr, Cleve land, who was probably fatally scald ed and crushed. The escape of the seven mail clerks Is miraculous. None of them suffered more than slight bruises. Kxpress Messenger John Qd mnnds, of Bellevue, Ky had charge of the express car and was thrown vio lently against the bend end of his car, but escaped with a severe shaking up. Those In tho sleepers were not awak ened. Pljbe and Cavenir were discov ered lying tinder the front platform of the mall car. Doth were badly scald ed and terribly crushed. Neither will recover. The coupling pin had opened the elevator switch, and the engine ran a short distance on the siding and turned over. The coupling broke and thlB re leased the air and stopped the train. But for this the whole train would have been ditched. Hnglneer Wlnslow re versed his lever and seems to have umped, for he was found 20 feet from the train with the top ot his hetid. crushed In. Fireman Crlckmore was found pressed up against the boiler by the tender. The flesh was almost roasted from his body. Three tramps were riding In the front of the first postal car. One of these was scalded by the steam, and the other was bad ly jammed between the cars. The third was not badly hurt. One postal car was thrown orossways of the) up turned engine tender, and then was dashed against it. Two Killed In it Frolght tVrook. Buffalo, July 31. Two Lehigh freight trains came In collision at Depew Junc tion, seven miles east of here, early tn the morning, killing George Hlsbree, engineer, ot Manchester, and Charles Eddy, fireman, of Sayre.
