The loss will probably reaoh half a

thrown out of employment. Thore
Were no casualties, though the build

the fire was discovered
The fire originated In the blowing
room of the hat factory of William
Reed & Co., on tho lower floor of the
shelter building. Two large ens meters
exploded Immediately after the flames
burst forth, itnd tho escaping gas from
the meters helped to feed the flames.
Within a few minutes the fire was
breaking through the wlndowaof the
first and second stories. There were
COO men and girls in the building, the
third, fourth and fifth floors of which
were occupied by the silk factories
Intense excitement prevailed while the
employes left the building by the lire
escape, the girls being taken out first
and all losing their street clothes, so
little "time was given. The fire soon
ate out the heart of the building, and
then uortlons of the walls fell. The

This Is whst she says: "The symptoms
descrllied for kidney complaint were iniue

down low in the bsok ; 1 suffered from head
aches that were terrible In severity ; had
some stomach disorder; the nrlno was highly

Rheumatism
Is a blood disease ami only a Mood reme
dy can cure it. So many people make
the mistake of taking remedies which
at best arc only tonics and cannot possi
bly reach their trouble. Mr. Asa Smith,
Grccncnstle, Indiana, says: "For years
I have suffered with Sciatic Rheuma
tism, which the best physicians were un
able to relieve. I took many patent
medicines but they did not seem to
reach my trouble. I gradually grew
worse until I was un
able to take my food
or handle myself in
any way; I was abso
lutely helpless. Three
bottles of S.S.S. re
lieved me so that I
was soon able to move
my right arm; before
long I could walk
across the room, and
when I had finished one dozen bottles
was cured completely and am as well as
ever. I now weigh 170."

San VranclBco, July 28. The throngs
about every shipping office that hap
even the remotest Alaskan relations
have by no moans diminished. It would
seem that the "only circumstance which
prevents the wholesale depopulation of
San Francisco Is the limit to the trans
portation facilities. Not only strong
men whose broad backs, bronzed faces
and work worn hands tell of previous
experience with the labor that literally
sweats the brow, but clerks and pro
fessional men and women In hundreds
are seeking for Information or trans
portation to the land where nuggets
are to be had, they think, for the pick
ing up.
Every day sees some new scheme for
overcoming the difficulties In the way
of reaching the KIAndlke, and the fleet
of steamers and schooners pressed Into
the service Is growing steadily. The
latest of the Klondike transportation
company schemes Is being engineered
by Captain Ilerrlman, who has mapped
out a plan for reaching the diggings by
the middle of September. He will char
ter a large sailing vessel, and the party
will consist of 60 men, each of whom
will take one ton of provisions. No one
will be permitted to go unless he takes
this quantity. Bach one will be charged
22! for the trip, and Captain Ilerrlman
thinks that for this sum he can land
them In Dawson City before Sept. 20.
The ship will carry a large lighter, and
a steam launch will be used to tow the
lighter from St. Michaels to the Klon
dike. After reaching St. Michaels the
cargo and passengers will be trans
ferred to .the lighter and conducted to
tholr Journey's end by a man who Is
thoroughly acquainted with Vhe'river.
The Alaska Commercial company's
stearffer Excelsior, which left yester
day, will not make another trip to
Alaska before June of next year. All
tho accommodations to be disposed of
for this trip have been sold, but would-
be passengers continue to throng the
Company's office. The Commercial com
pany not only declines to sell any more
tickets, but Its representatives do all
in their power to dissuade applicants
from making the trip until next year.
Returned Yukonltes deny the story
tpid by Prank Moss, of Great Palls,
Mont,, to the effect that 2,000 graves at
Forty Mile post tell of the terrible Suf
ferings of the gold seekers. P. G. Bow
ker says that so far from being over
2,000 deaths on the Yukon during the
past three years, there was nobody
there to die until something less than
a year ago, and since then there have
been three deaths In that whole dls
tiict so far as known. In the grave
yard at Forty Mile post, which had
served for all that sedlop for some
years past there are only between SO
and 40 graves.
Captain llay, TJ. S. A., with five offi
cers and 60 men, will leave Seattle for
Circle City, Alaska, via St. Michaels.
Aug. 5. Orders have been sent here to

will include woolen blankets, axes and
all tools necessary to ba used In "hut

will bo shipped from Philadelphia by

the United States officers and their
men on the North American Trans
portation and Trading company's

the government $1D0, and each ton of
freight will be charged for at $80. i

The worst enemy with which hard-working
men have to contend is a disordered
digestion. It is the starting point for most
flckness and disease. Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery prevents sickness and
disease. Its use insures a hearty appetite,
and healthful, restful sleep. It corrects all
disorders of the digestion, Invigorates the
liver and purifies the blood. It tones the
nerves. It makes pure, rich blood, builds
firm healthy flesh, and strong, elastic tnui
cle. The man who resorts to It. whenever
he feels out of sorts, may, within reason,
work as hard as he pleases. Druggists
sell it.

One of the best-known of American med
ical men said : " If yon want to reform a
man, begin with his grandfather." That
would be wise if it could be done. Since it
cannot be done, try something else. Reform
the future grandfathers and grandmothers.
Do this through education. The greatest
thing for a man or woman to know is him
self or herself. To know one-half the capa
bilities and disabilities of the human body
is a liberal education. A good start for this
education is Dr. Pierce's Common Sense
Medical Adviser. Any one can have this
finely illustrated tooo-page book for the
small price of twenty-one one-cent stamps.
This is simply to pay for mailing. If you
would like the book in fine cloth binding
instead of paper, send thirty-one stamps to
