A (Told Seokrtp Who llotitrnoil From tlio Aluskii-l'lolcl llroltcm in llonltli Doalnron Thnt Two Thousand llavo Died or Stiii'vntlon. Washington, July 24. Captain C. t. Hooper, commanding the Uehring sen patrol ileal, in a report to the treas ury department dated Unnlnska, July 5, says that the Alaska Commercial aompany's steamer Excelsior ajrlved at that port on July 4, with about 40 miners from the Yukon district and about $600,000 In gold bullion. Contin uing he says: The IQxcelslor brings wonderful ac counts of rich discoveries In the Klon dyko, on Reindeer rlvor, where fortunes are being made In a few weeks. Ac cording to these reports nothing has ever been discovered on the co tlnent approaching It In richness. The Klon- dyke Is n tributary of the 'Yukon, a few miles above Forty 'Mile, and Is wholly within Canadian territory. Gold was discovered there last autumn, and during the winter attracted the miners from all directions. It Is said that over 2,000 men arc located at Dawson, the principal town, while Circle City, Forty Mile and other places are nearly deserted. Owing to the sudden Influx of people provisions were high, but so far ub I can learn thore was no actual suffering. Of the 40 passengers on board returning from these mines It Is said none have lean than JS.000, apd some have $60,000. Others who have made their pile are coming on the steamer Portland. Two packages of coarse gold, one contain Ing $120 and one $130, are shown as the result of washing one pan of dirt each. The principal mines are on the Bonanza nnd Eldorado creeks, small branches of the Klondyke. and extend 16 or 18 miles. Being in (he bed of the river, the claims can only be worked In the winter, when the outsoll Is frozen. The pay dirt Is melted by flro built In the shaft, and the gold ex tracted by the usual washing out pro cess. A claim Is 500 feet In the direction of the river, apd from bank to bank, provided It docs not exceed 66G feet. The cost of recording a claim Is $16, nnd the yearly rental $100. Claims have sold as high as $60,000, and a still higher price has been refused for others. A TALE OF SUFFEltlNa. Mntiy Ilnvo Died of Starvation in tlio Gold FloldM. Great Falls, Montr July 24. Frank Moss, an old time miner In this sec tion, who four years ago was one of a party of Americans to first visit the Klondyke country, returned yesterday, and tells a story of horrors and star vation seldom equalled, even In modern- novels, lie describes Klondyke as a placer camp seven miles long and thir teen miles wide, located In a sink, walled In by boulders of rock 3.000 feet high. Gold abounds, he says, but no ordinary man can stand the, hardships of the uncivilized region. Whert Moss left here 'four years ago he was a sturdy fellow, over six feet tall. From hardships and privation he is a crip ple for life and badly broken-In health. In three years he saw over 2,000 graves made In the Klondyke basin, a large majority dying from starvation. The steamship companies bring In all the food, and allow no private Importation. Consequently, It Is not uncommon to go for weeks with but a scant supply and for days entirely without food. The gold brought In last week to Se attle, Moss says, does not represent the findings of Individual shippers, but a largo proportion was confiscated from the effects of those 2,000 miners who fell a prey to the hardships. At the death of a man possessed of dust his body was burled without a coffin and the dust divided among those who care,d for him. With proper reliefs es tablished by the government, Moss says, gold can be taken out at the rate of $2,000,000 a month. The richest strike has been made by a 21-year-old boy named George Jlorn- bloWer, of Indianapolis. In the heart of a barren waste, known as Boulder field, he found a nugget for which the transportation gave him $6,700. lie lo cated his claim at the find and In four months had taken out over $100,000. The richest section of Alaska, Moss says, Is yet undeveloped. It Is 100 miles from Klondyke and known aa the Black Hole of Calcutta, It Is Inhabit ed by ex-convlcts of Bohemia, and murder and riot take the place of law, with the great crowds preparing to go to the scene now, Moss says, hun ger and suffering will be great when added to the other hordshlps to be over come by those who survive. Moss re turned with $0,003 In dust, and left to day for his home at Dubuque, la.. where he will Spend tho balance of his years. Dosortlntr Alaska Coast Towns, San Francisco, July 24. Among the arrivals from Alaska on the steamer Bertha was Dr. C. F. Dickenson, of Kodiak Island, which lies just at the head of Cook's Inlet. He says the gold oxcltemont all over tho territory of Alaska 1b something unprecedented, and that people are flocking to tho Klondyke In a way that threatens to depopulate many of the trading posts and coast towns. He says many of the industries are left prrfctlcally without the means -of operation. Mines that are paying handsomely at Cook's Inlet have been deserted. He declares there are Just aB good placier diggings to be found at Cook's Inlet as In the Klon dyke region. There Is not a foot of ground In ail that countrv that does not contain cold in more or less ap preciable quantities!, and there ! cer tainly no better place In the world for a poor man. The men are all connected with the boat. Immediately after the explosion an alarm of Are was sounded, but the fire was quickly extinguished, and the fire men had little to do but to assist and care for the Injured. The explosion was probably caused by the Igniting of naphtha vapor. "When the boat returned from her trip to New York In the afternoon IJurton M. Heed, of this city, according to custom, went aboard to clean up the forecastle, and sprinkled the beds and mattresses with nnphtha vapor and then left. The stevedores wore eating on the "supper" deck. Just over the hold, when the explosion took place, and the men were thrown in all directions against the woodwork. Two of the men were thrown overboard, and were rescued uninjured, while none of the others es caped unharmed. The deck under the Hupper table was blown open ten feet wide, while both sides of the boat for ward of the gangway were torn Into splinters and thrown in all directions. A huge mass of fragments was scat tered all over the lower deck, and as far back aa the engine room all the carpenter work was wrecked. The In terior of the dining room on the fore castle was completely wrecked also. It was first alleged that lightning struck the boat, but It was later ascer tained that a deckhand went Into the hold to light his pipe, and it is believed that the lighted match In the closed forecastle caused the naphtha vapor to explode.
