New Haven, Conn., July 22. An ap palling accident occurred yesterday In the shell load I tin department of the Winchester Repeating Fire Armn com pany. Without an Instant's wnrnlng tx human beings lost their Uvea by an explosion, and another victim died booh afterward at the hospital. A score of others were more or less seriously In jured, but no further fatalities are an ticipated. More than 160 men and wo men are employed In the loading de partment, and that more fatalities did not result from the concussion Is al most miraculous. The hundreds ot people who gathered about the gates Immediately after the explosion witnessed a gruesome sight Six dead bodies, blackened with powder and frightfully mangled, almost beyond recognition, ware lying on the floor. Near by two Injured men were writh ing In agony, and all about were men running with their face and arms bleeding from shot wounds, unmindful of their Injuries, trying to assist and quell the confusion. Owing to the num ber of girls, who were carried out In a fainting condition, it was believed that many of them were seriously In jured, and there was a great feeling of relief when It was found that In moat oases they were unharmed. The dead are William F. Baumer. Mrs. Mary Baumelster, Miss Josle Brennan, Miss Ida Brown, William Hill, Miss Tracy Conroy and Edward Bardorf. George Bardort and Edward Blair wero fatally Injured. The explosion occurred in the load ing room. Employed In this room were ISO hands, two-thirds of them girls or women. Nearly all of the fe male hands are employed on tho load ing machines, each of which employs three operators. The full complement of hands was at work In the room when the explosion took place. Forty feet of the side of the building was blown out and hurled In pieces many feet, and fragments of human bodies wero scattered In a sickening manner. A hurry call was sent for all available physicians; the lire department, the police, the ambulance and hospital dorps were speedily summoned, and the work of caring for the dead and in jured was begun. Perhaps the saddest scene was en acted when John Baumelster learned that his Wife was among the dead. He lived In Hampton, and had but recently married. At the time of the explosion he was at work but a few feet distant from Ills wife. The erfUloslon did not cause a fire, and the fire deunrtment confined Us efforts to aiding 1 the work of relief. The cause of the explosion has not been determined, and perhaps Its cause may nevor bo known. Those nt work In the room ft the time any that t was due tp thf? Top trmt a oartrldge In process Of loading had been Improperly placed lu the machine. The two Bardorf boys, working side by side, were thrown at a tnngent out one Bldo of the building. They struck the ground 20 feet away. Edward Blair, working ten fet away nt his machine, was sent upward through the roof, Ho fell on an nsh heap, with broken bones and a fractured skull and his legs twisted out of shape. Mrs. Baumelster was but 10 years old, ant had been In the factory but tliroo weeks. She was married a little over a month ngo, nnd she and her husband, Frits, used adjoining machines. The girl was blown fully DO feet, and was io crushed out of shape that it was al most Impossible to Identify her. The husband, curiously enough, was ap parently blown with the same force and by the same blast, and yet he Is one of the least seriously Injured. He struck the ground but a few feet short of his wife, and staggered to hla feet and fell across he mass of mangled fleeU that had been his wife. Edward Bardorf died after being taken to the hospital. Ida Brown, one of those killed out right, came from Detroit, Mich., In which city her parents reside. T. O. Bennett, president of the com pany, said: We have been running automatic loading machines for,. 20 years, nnd this Is the first time that anyone has been injured In their use. Since the adoption of Jhose machines wo have had no accident In the use of black gunpowder." Mr. Bennett expressed the belief that through the carelessness of the oper ator or the powder boy the machine that exploded, had boon overcharged.
