Vet all the lives that arc lost each year by
violence and accident are but an insignifi
cant fraction to the untold thousands that
are slain by the grim destroyer, consump
tion. It is the most insidious and the dead
liest of all known diseases. It knows neith
er tank not wealth. It attacks people in all
the walk of life. It makes no distinctions.
It has for centuries been considered incur
sble. It is not.
An almost unfailing cure for consumption
It found in Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis
covery. It acts directly upon the lungs and
also corrects the aggravating cause of the
disease. It corrects all disorders of the di
gestion, Invigorates the liver and makes the
assimilation of the food perfect, thus nour
Isliing and strengthening the system for its
battle with its relentless foe. It fills the ar
teries with the rich, pure blood of health.
It builds new, healthy tissue in the lungs
and drives out all impurities and disease
germs. It cures oB per cent of all cases of
consumption. Thousand have testified to
their cures. All druggists sell it.
"I was taken sick In February, 1887, with ty
phoid pneumonia," writes Mrs. Henrietta Hart,
of Voorheesville, Albany Co., N. Y. " I then had
a miscarriage. I did not leave my bed to sit in a
chair till the first of June. I had medical care all
that time. I v. .is so weak I could not turn In bed
alone. The doctor said he could do no more for
me. I was couching and raiting and was almost
dead with consumption. I gave up to die. I took
seven bottles of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis
covery and 'Favorite Prescription ' together (not
seven of each), and I was then able to do my own
housework, for my Tkmlly of four. In less than
threeycars freed the time I began your medicine.
I gave btrtb to a healthy baby girl that weighed
eight pounds. I have had two children since,
and am enjoying good health now."
Pretty eyes, bright, snappy and full of fire
and life. Constipation makes the blood
impure, and the eyes get dull and heavy,
glazed and listless. Dr. Pierce's Pleasant
Pellets cure constipation speedily and per
manently. They never gripe. They are
tiny, anti-bilious, sugar-coated granules.

Washington, July 9. Senator Iahnm 1
G. Harris, of Tennessee, died at hli
residence here a few minutes befoie
t o'clock yesterday afterninin. The
senntor had been growing rointantl)
weaker for several days past, the in
tense summer heat which has prevailed
greatly debilitating him and no dnubt
hastening his end. There were times (
when he would rally slightly, which 1
gave his family hopes that he would
be able to regain strength sufficient tc
be removed from the city, but his vital
ity had become too much exhausted
to withstand the strain. Yesterday
morning the senator revived somewhat,
but only temporarily. During the after
noon he sank rapidly, and passed away
peacefully. There were present at his
bedside when death came his son, Mr.
Kdward K. Harris, and the letter's
wife; Representative Denton McMU-
TOR LATE ISIIAM O. HAniilS.
lln, of Tennessee: Miss Polk, a friend
from his native stale, and the members
of the household where tlfe senator has
lived for some time. Another son,
Charles S. Harris, not realizing the
end was so near, had left the house a
short time before death came.
Another son, James E. Harris, re
siding in Tennessee, arrived In the city
today, and a fourth son, Isham G.
Harris, Jr Is now on his father's ranch
and stock farm at Abilene, Tex., and
probably will meet the funeral train
when it reaches Memphis, where the
interment will he made.
Senator Harris was last In the senate
chamber about ten days ago, but he
whs unable to stay for any length of
time, and had to be taken home In a
carriage. During the past bIx months
the senator had been able to attend to
his duties only at intervals, having
been away from the city several times
endeavoring to recuperate.
Senator Harris' remains will lie In
state In the marblo room of the senate
tomorrow morning, nnd during the af
ternoon funeral services will be held In
the senate chamber. Accompanied by
committees of the senuto and house,
the body will be taken to Memphis,
leaving here after tho senate cere
monies. On Monday thn remains will
lie in state for a few hours at Nnrh
vllle. Probably no man in public life has
beep identified with moro of the his
tory of this country; than Senator
Harris. He had almost completed his
seventy-ninth year, having been born
In February, 1S1S, nnd first became a
member of congress In 1849. His con
gressional career thus began earlier
than that of any member of either
house, antedating Senators Morrill and
Sherman by seven years, and Hon.
Galusha A. Grow, now a member of
the house from Pennsylvania, by ons
yoftr. Mr, Harris had, when elected
to congress, already become a man of
state reputation In Tennessee, having
the year previously served as a presl
lentlal elector on the Democratic ticket
and two years before been elected a
member of the legislature of the state.
Mr. Harris represented the ninth
Tennessee district In congress for the
two terms ending in 1853, when he de
clined a renominatlon. He then moved
to Memphis, where he has since resid
ed. Here he was engaged In the prac
tice of law until 1SB7, with the inter
ruption necessary to allow him to be
come a presidential eleotor In I860. He
was three times In succession before
the war, beginning In 1857, elected gov
ernor of the state, and was serving in
that capacity when the war broke out,
He took a pronounced stand for tho
southern Confederacy, and was known
na ono of the southern war governors.
The vicissitudes of conflict rendered a
frecment change of residence neces
sary, and he was often with the army
in the field. He attached himself at
different times to the staffs of Generals
Albort Sidney Johnston, Joseph John
ston, Beauregard and Bragg. Albert
Sidney Johnston fell from his horse
Into Senator Harris' arms when he re
ceived his death wound.
After Lee's surrender Mr. Harris was
one of the small party of political refu
gee who escaped to Mexico, going
across country on horseback. Parson
Brovvnlovv, who had become tha mill,
taxy governor of Tennewee, offered a
larrje reward In a characteristically
worded poster for the capture of his
predecessor, but the latter remained
absent from the country until his re
turn was safe. He remained In Mexico
for several months, going thence to
ISngland, where he resided until 1887,
when he returned to Memphis and re
sumed his practice of the law.
Mr. Harris was allowed to follow the
pursuits of the private cltlaen until
1877, when he was elected to the United
States senate, defeating Hon. L. L.
Hawkins, Republican. He has remain
ed a member of the senate ever since,
and would have completed his 20tU con
secutive year In that body on the
4th of next March if he had lived te
tljat atc. III term would not have
expired until 1801.
Senator Harris had received almost
all the honors that the senate oould
bentow, He wsj the preaidant pro tern,
during; the Fifty-third congress, a
Isitiling member of the committees ot
lluance and rules and alao of the Demo
cratic advisory or steering committee.
He has long been awarded by common
consent the front place on both sides of
the chamber In parliamentary ques
tions, and In recent yean he had been
more frequently heard In expounding
these questions than In the elucidation
of other subjects.
Senator Harris was a native of Ten
nessee. Ills father was a planter, who
had emigrated to the state from KtKth
Carolina. He was admitted to the bar
