THE ALIEN LAW.
It Is Unforced nt Alt the 1'. It. O. & I.
Company's Collieries,
The now alien tax law went Into effect
yesterday and the P. & K. C. & I. Co. lias
alroady enforced it. Tho law taxes all
unnaturalized foreigners iu employ of cor
porations three cents per day, which sum
must be deducted from their wages. On
Wednesday tho P. & It. C. & I. Co. issuod
notices In this district ordorlug every
foreigner to brine his naturalization papers
with him to work yestorday. Those who are
In possession of such papers ore highly elated
and thero is no doubt but that thoy will
readily accedo to tho demand. Tho trouble,
which it was feared would result in several
using tho same papers, will be obviated in
having n day set for ovoryono to present
their proof of naturalization. The idea
of straightening tho matter out at tho
beginning and not allowing it to proceed
until the pay roll is completed, is a good one
and ono that should be followed by every
other corporation, thus saving trouble at
that time and preventing the carrying out of
scheme to ovado paying this tax. Failure
to comply with tho order permits of no
leasonable excuse, as tho matter has been
mado perfectly clear. Tho only liopo for
reaping the full benefit of this law lies with
tho various county judges, who iu their
naturalizing processos should maintain a
strict examination, highly necessary iu this
case, as tho applicants will bo many who
would ovado tho tax.
A uotico has also been served on each fore
man of the Hallway company that ho should
at once discharge, all foreigners employed, in
order to savo tlie' troublo that will arise from
enforcing tho new law. This action of tho
company's is all its own and the action is
nearer to what was dosired by tho framers of
tho new law, and wo roup thobenofit. Whllo
none tu our knowledge is employed in tho
transportation department, yet hundreds
find employment in tho repair gangs. Al
though otrectcd through tho instrumentality
of a law, yet the company showed a proper
spirit in putting a construction upon tho
law that virtually means tho oustlug of
ovcry unnaturalized foreigner from their
employ.
