Knoxvllle, Tenn., April 9. Never In
the history of Knoxvllle has the city
suffered such a. loss by fire as It did
yesterday. The very heart of the city,
including some of the largest whole
sale and retail business houses In the
south, was destroyed. The loss Is vari
ously estimated at from $1,009,000 to
$1,500,000, with about 60 per cent of In
surance. The loss of life Is very uncertain, the
register of the Hotel Knox, In which
EG people were sleeping-, was burned
The proprietor of the hotel says that
he had live or six guests who have not
put In an appearance. A. 15. Weeks,
of Locke, N. Y., drummer for a Ito
chester stamping company, Is known
to have perished In the (lames. It. W.
Hopkins, a St. I.ouIb drummer, was
last seen In the burning building in a
suffocating condition. A man named
Itoblnson, from I'ulaskl, Tenn., la sup
posed to be another victim. He was
registered at the hotel,' and has not
yet shown up. A cabinetmaker named
P. C. Dyer fell dead on the street from
pTolcment. hr being subject to heart
disease, A number of persons were
seriously Injured.
w. it. Kephurt, ex-secretary of the
chamber of commerce, saved the life
of John Bogle, an old farmer, by drag
glnjr him to a window anil lotting him
out on the roof ot another building.
Kepliurt Jumped one story and was
Injured. When the firemen thought all
the Inmatea of the hotel had escaped a
woman with an Infant In her arms
rushed to a rear window and screamed
for help, A net was quickly stretched
and the woman asked to drop the child
out, but as the smoke almost choked
her she told them that If one had to die
both would die. The woman was final
ly rescued by the firemen, with the
babe In her arms.
From the hotel building, which Is flvo
stories, the fire spread east and west.
A stiff wind made the llames very ugly,
and the flro department was Inade
quate. In the wholesale hardware
house of W. W. Woodruff & Co. a dy
namite explosion occurred, and scores
of people were hurt by Hying bricks
and glass. It became necessary at last
to have the walls of one building blown
down by cannon to check tho spread of
fire. A mountain howitzer was called
Into play, and a load of canister did
the work, at the same time tearing up
some residences in a different portion
of the city.
The city authorities, realizing that
the lire department was unable to con
quer the llames, telegraphed to Chat
tanooga for assistance. An engine was
placed aboard a flat car on the South
ern railway, and started the run of
111 miles, which was made by Engineer
Ttobblns in 115 minutes, with one stop
for water, an average of 60 miles an
hour, breaking the record, When the
engine arrived hero the fire was about
under control, yet the Chattanooga
boys did some work.
The Inst man to leave the burning
hotel Bays that he is positive that five
or six persons were burned. lie ran
over three or four men in the hall
ways who wero suffocated.
J. lit. Dean, of Kansas City, who
jumped from the burning building, tells
a thrilling story ijf his escape. He
started out with only his nightshirt
on, and had that torn oft before he
reached the street.
W. I. Johnson, a railroad baggage
master, came down from the fifth
story hand over hniul on the water
pipes before the fire engines arrived.
Only one of the guests saved nny of
his effects.
The list of dead and Injured so far
reported Is as follows:
Dead A. K. Weeks, Locke, N. Y.;
It. W. Hopkins, St. Louis; Itobln
son, Pulaski, Tenn,; 6. E. Williams,

London, April 9. A dispatch to The
Times from Constantinople says that
the porte ycnterday afternoon commu
nicated to thi" ambassadors the con
tents of three circulars dispatched to
the Ottoman representatives abroad.
The first, dated April 5, notifies the
powers that the porte 1b willing to
withdraw the Turkish garrison from
Crete Immediately If the Greeks pre
viously withdraw and the powers guar
antee to pacify the Island. It demands
also that Greece should evacuate Crete
forthwith. The second Is dated April
C, and protests, In anticipation, against
the appointment by the powers of a
IDuropean governor of the Island. The
third, dated April 7, protests against
the Injustice of disarming the Cretan
Mohammedans while the Christians are
permitted to retain their arms.
The Athens correspondent of The
Times says:
"There Is an evident disinclination on
the part of some of the powers to
carry out any program of coercion, and
a weakening of purpose is perceptible
In the Kuropean federation, which Is
showing signs of decreptltude. The
similarity ot language between the
declaration and the recent warning o
The Journal Ue St. Petersburg has
been noticed here, and this latest step
of the powers is attributed to the Uus

ally hostile attitude has produced great
Indignation. Well informed persons
here believe that Count Muravleff, who
Inherits the traditions of an autocratic
family, is resolved to play a masterful
role in European politics, and to leave
an Impression upon the history of his
time.

"The opinion of the Greek nowspa-
pers Is virtually unanimous as to the
recent declaration of the powers. It is
that tho Kuropean concert, aftor a con
spicuous failure as to Crete, Is grad
ually tending to dissolution, and will be
obliged to content Itself with a mere
admonition."
The Times prints the following dis
patch from Its Canea correspondent:
"The Cretans are now massing
around Kissamo. They have mounted
four guns and Intend to attack the
fort, which Is held by 150 Turks. "Wed
nesday they wrote to the captain of
the Austrian warship anchored in the
bay, declaring that as the action of
the International fleet had hitherto
been hostile to them they would repel
forcibly any attempt of the warships
to Interfere with their designs at Kis
samo, It Is expected, therefore, that
the Cretans will direct their guns upon
the warships if the latter open fire."
The correspondent of The Times at
Elassona says:
"Accompanied by a staff officer I
have visited the frontier posts at Ma
luna Pass, which commands a splendid
view of the two plains of Elassona and
Larissa. It Is near the top of the
mountain. The Turkish and Greek
blockhouses are about 30 yards apart.
We were received by the olflcers of the
Greek post. They were agreeable and
frlendiy, but they did not seem es
pecially anxious for war."
