Many Children Survive
Joseph Kccse, formerly Insido foreman of
Packer No. 2 colliery, and widely known in
mining circles, died at Ms home in Lost
Creek at 5:15 lust evening after suffering for
somo timo from meningitis. The decerned
was 53 years of ago and is survived hy four
teen children, all over twelve years of age.

former died about a year ago. Mr. lieeso was i
very prominent in thu mining circle? of this j
valley, in that he was among tho pioneers in
tho operations about Lost Creek. :

Sleep Last Night.
Frederick A, Williams, tho subject
Who was put to sleep by Prof. Sage,
tho hypnotist, in Fergusou's on Mon
day night, last, and remained on a cot
in tho window space of tho storeroom on
South Main street occupied by the Edison
Company until 7 o'clock last evening, when
ho was carried back to Hie theatre, was
awakened on tho stago by the hypnotist
at 0:43 o'clock, or exactly 4S hours after tho
sleep started. Owing to tho muscular relaxa
tion consequent upon the awakening six
attendants on tho stago were required to hold
Williams. For about 20 or 30 seconds there was
determined strugglo in which the attendants
found dltllculty iu retaining their hold; the
subject then awakened, looked dazed for a
moment or two, then his countenance
brightened, a smile passed over it and
Williams walked from tho stage unassisted!
aud with steady strides, after mak-'
ing a courtesy to the audience. Just
prior to tho awakening the subject was
weighed by (leorgo If. Krick, who an
nounced tho figures as 131 pounds, Williams
having lost i pounds during tho sleep. Ho
weighed 130 pounds on Monday night. The
balance of tho evening's program was both
interest! tigand amusing to an intense degree
The hypnotic grouping for tho tableau was
heartily applauded. Thoro will be no ox
hlbition to-night, but two will bo given to
morrow, in the afternoon and evening.

Death In a Fall.
Mrs. Bridget Joyce, mother of Thomas J.
Joyce, formerly editor of tho Mahanoy City
American, met instant death yesterday morn
ing by falling down stairs at her homo near
East Mines and breaking her neck. She
arose early yesterday and was about to do
6cend the flight of stairs, when sho tripped
aud fell to tho bottom. When picked up by
her daughter, Mrs. Julia Malia, sho was still
alive but died right after being put to bed
Mrs. Joy co was very agtd. I or many years
she conducted a hotel in New Castle town

Whitelock's Shoe Stoke.
Tho borough prosonted a busy appearance
to-day. Shoppers were upon the streets by
the hundreds making purchases of presents
and tho wherewithals for the Christmas
dinner. The pastors and congregations con
nected with many of tho churches wero also
busy prcpariug for tho usual services and en
tertainments, and none will be in ueed.'of a
suitable place to spend a Merry Christmas
to-morrow.
Among tho ovsnts announced iu this con
nection is an entertainment and annual pre
sentation to the membors of tho Welsh Bap
tist Sunday school. It will tako placo to
night in tho church at tho corner of West
and Oak streets. Thero will be no services
in tho church to-morrow.
Itegular Christmas morning service will be
held in All Saints church, on East Oak strcot,
at 7 o'clock to-morrow morning. Tho
Christmas festival and entertainment will
not be held until next Monday, by which
timo tho congregation will take possession of
its new church at tho cornor of. West and
Oak streets. Tho first sorvlco will be held
in it on Sunday next.
An early Christmas morning meeting will
be held in the Methodist Episcopal church
and a cordial invitation is extended to tho
public to attend at six o'clock. In issuing
it Itov. Alfred Ilcobnor, tho pastor, says,
"Let Christmas people, old and young, unito
iu tho happy song of praise" Christmas
exercises for the Infant department of tho
Sunday school will bo held to-morrow after

evening. The doors of tho church will be

will celebrato Christmas in the evening. An
excellent program of singing, recitations and
drills will be offered. Tho church has been
elaborately decorated for tho occasions.
Special offerings will be taken at both meet
ings. The annual Christmas distribution to tho
Sunday school will tako place in the Bethany
United Evangelical church at 2 o'clock to
morrow afternoon and at 7 o'clock in the
evening the regular Christmas service will bo
held iu the church, A program of singing,
recitations and addresses will bo offered.
There will no services duiing the day in
the English Baptist church, but in the oven
ing an entertainment will be held aud a box
of candy presented to each one present. An
admission of ten cents will be charged
thoso not members of the school,
Iu the Presbyterian church to-morrow
evening, the Christmas exercises will bo of
unusual interest. The entertainment will be
of a musical and literary naturs, and will
surpass anything of tho kind yet held in
tho church. The scholars will reccivo their
Christmas presents in the evoning, as there
will be no services in the church during tho
day.
In accordance with an annual custom tho
Wolsh Congregational Sunday school will
assemble in tho church to-morrow and re
ceive their Christmas candy.
The Primitive Methodist Suuday school
will hold its Christmas festival iu tho church
to-night. There will bo no service to
morrow. No stock of watches in gold or silver so
handsome aud attractive in Shenandoah
