Canton, U, Nov. 5. Major McKlnley

LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 5. Mr. Hrynu dot
not cuueedo his defeat, nor, on the otlui

awaiting tho later returns with fnuch in

riser yesturday. He had hud his break
fast nnd was recolvlng callors at 9 o'clock.
Ho was dhvcrful and buoyant and clearly
showed that ho had had a refreshing
night's rest. Telegrams beg'in to arrive
early In tho day, and while none of them
madoany positive claims as to general re

character, giving tho Democratlo candi

public bulletins. Dlsnatchos from Ken

that state, on tho basis of big gains in the
Western section, whilo encouraging word
was received from Indiana and Michigan.
Mr. Hryan commented upon these us a
disinterested obsorvcr might havo done,
but mado no general claims upon them.
Ho said ho would have no comment to
mako until tho rosult was absolutely
known. Among tho dispatches received
were several from Senator Jones, national
chairman, all of which wero reassuring.
One admirer, apparently nccoptlng tho re
ports of defeat ns authentic, wired : "Con
gratulations on your magnificent fight.
It was four years from Hull Kun to Appo
mattox." Mr. Hryan last night gavo out tho fol
lowing, in reply to numerous telegrams
from nil parts of tho country:
"Tho Democratic national eominltteo
claims enough states to givo a majority In
tho electoral collogo, but tho voto is very
close in several of tho statos, mid tho re
sult cannot bo positively known until the
ontiro voto is counted. In all cloo con
tests it is wise for both sides to watch tho
returns to guard against tho possibility of
mistake, intentional nnd unintentional."
In conversation with friends Mr. llrynn
freely discussed tho probabilities, refer
ring to tho closeuoss of tho roto in several
of tho states. Ho read all bulletins with
interest, but, in reply to questions, said ho
wos not allowing tho uncertainty to causa
tho loast degree of worry. Ho spoko
cheerfully to all, but it became evident
towards tho latter part of tho day that ho
was growing less and loss hopeful. Ho
was especially gratified at tho rosult In
Nobraska.
