London, Oct. 12. Tho archbishop of
Canterbury wns seized with apoplexy after
tho service commenced at Hawarden
church yesterday morning. Ho was car
ried to tho Hawardon rectory, whore ho
died at 11:30 o'clock. Tho archbishop ar
rived nt Hawardon on Saturday evening
on his return from a visit in tho north of
Iroland. Ho appeared thou to bo In robust
health, and expressed to Mrs. Gladstono
his groat gratification ovor his Irish tour.
Ho aroso early on Sunday aud attended
tho early communion with his wife aud
others.
Tho weather was bitterly cold and Mr.
Gladstono did not attend tho church, but
nt 10 o'clock tho archbishop and Mrs. Ben
son, Honry Gladstono, Mrs. Gladstono,
Mrs. Drew and Dorothy Drew, went to
tho morning service. Tho whole party oc
cupied tho Gladstono pew near tho chan
cel. While tho rector, Hov. Stephen Glad
stone, was reading tho absolution, Arch
bishop Benson, who was kneeling, was
seen to twitch In tho arm for a fow niln
utos, nnd ho thou collapsed altogether. Ho
was carried Into tho library adjoining tho
rectory, and doctors hastily summoned.
Applications of ether and other moans to
induce artificial respiration wero resorted
to. Mr. Gladstone, tho rector, who had
loft tho church when tho archbishop was
earrlod out, returned nnd nnuounced tho
Illness to tho congregation, who were
waiting in pnlnful suspense.
All efforts to rally the distinguished pa
tient proved vain', and he died In n fow
minutes. Honry Gladstone whispered the
nows to tho rector, who announced the
archbishop's) death, tho nows causing a
profound sensation amongst tho worship

With tho Lord" was sung and tho dead
march played, all present standing.

D. D., archbishop of Canterbury, prlmato
of all England, and metropolitan, sou of
Kdward White Benson, Esq., of Birming
ham Heath, and formerly of York, was
born near Birmingham in 1829. Ho was
educated at King Edward's school, Bir
mingham, and at Trinity college, Cam-
bridge.of which he was successively scholar
and fellow, and wliero ho graduated 11. A.
In 1S32. Ho was graduated M. A. iu 1S55,
B. D. in 18 .2 and D. D. In 18157, Hon. 1). C.
L. (Oxford) 1881.

In Hugby school, and ho held tho head
mastership of Wellington collego from Its
first opening in 13oS down to 1872. Ho was

appointed by tho crown, on Mr. Glad
stone's recommendation, to tho archbish
opric of Canterbury.

low fevor continues to bo epldemlo there,

found. During September there were
1,084 deaths in Havana from tho disease.
Smallpox, instead of diminishing, in
creases dally, not only In Havana proper,
