Included tho First Voters' club of Howllnp

Haltlinoro nnd Ohio railroad, between
12:30 nnd 1:30 o'clock. They occupied
thirty coaohox.
In his nddrcss to tho Wood county dele
gation Major MoKlnloy spoko in part as
follows:
"Tho presence of this hody of young
men, who nro to vof o for tho first tlmo next
November, Is to mo an inspiring sight, nnd
that you nro so soon to enjoy tho priceloss
prlvilogo of citizenship must bo to nil oi
you nn Inspiring thought. For twenty
one years you hovo been enjoying our free
institutions, tho protection nnd opportu
nity of our laws, without any political
powor or responsibility. You nro soon to
nssumo your sharo In government nnd
bear your sharo of duty nnd responsibility.
I wondcr.as Hook Into yourfaccs.whethcr
you fully appreciate tho privilege and
honor which you nro so soon to liavo. I
fear sometimes that few of ns cRtlmnte
suffrngo nt its truo worth. It clothes u
with sovereignty. It isn gunranty to our
liberties nnd institutions, mulls our surest
rafcty. It Is Indeed n priceless Inheritance,
nnd should bo valued ns such by every
young man.
"With tho prlvilogo comos gravo re.
sponslbllltlos In its nso. It should exprosi
tlio intelligent and Judgment nnd con
science of tho voter, it should nover be
employed for nny bnso uso. It should be
exercised with courage, wisdom nnd pa-
triotlsm. It should never bo thrown
against tho country, nnd should nover rep
rodent public dishonor.
"I recall, young men, my first vote.
With what a thrill of pride I exercised for
tho Urt tlmo tho full prerogative of cm
zonship.X I hnvo not realized greater pride
since. I Telt that I had somo part In tho
government. Tho period nnd circiim.
stances when I cast my first voto may have
niado n dcoper Impression upon mo than
It otherwise would, but I rocall It now,
after thirty-two years, with sensations ol
joy and sntlsfaction. In tho crisis of war,
on tho vory field of conflict, my first vote
was cast for Abraham Lincoln. 1'rlcclos
memory to mo that I could voto for the
martyr to liberty, tho emancipator ot n
rafo mm tno savior or tno only ireo gov.
eminent among men.
"Yon gontlemcn did not havo that prlv.
liege, but It having boon denied you there
will bo somo satisfaction to you to voto
for tho party of Lincoln, which rallied the
voung men of tho country around the
banner of liberty, union nnd national
honor, between 1800 and 180, nnd now
summons you under tho samo glorious
banner. I cannot omit hero to mako n
quotation from Mr. Lincoln, writton to
the young men of Illinois on Juno 22, 1818,
Mr. Lincoln said:
" 'Now ns to tho young men. You must
not wait to bo brought forward by tho
oldor men. xou young men get together
form n 'rough and ready' club, anil hav
regular meetings and speeches. Lot overy
ono piny tho part ho can play best. Some
speak, some sing and nil hollor.'
"1 commend these homely words of Mr.
Lincoln to tho young mon ot tho country
tnieh organizations ns ho advlsoswlll hav
a powerful inlluonco In tho political con
test which Is now upon us. Thoy will not
only lnsplro tho young mon, but will
cheor tho hearts of tho old guards of tho
Ilopubllcan party. It is seldom given to
tho first votors of this country to start 1
so Important a national contost. It Is
year, too, whon old party divisions count
for littlo; when men of all parties aro
united In tho common object to save tho
country from dishonor and Its currency
from degradation. It is always safo.young
gontlomon, to nrrnngo yourselves on tho
sido of your country. It Is always pa
trlotio to stand against those who nro or
nosed to law and order and who woul
raise nrtlflciol barrlors between classos or
soctions In tho United States.
"I ventured n fow weeks ago to suggos'
in a public spooch that I made that it
would bo better to opon tho mills than to
open tho mints. I sco that somo of our
political ndvorsarlos crlticlzo tlio state
ment, saying that it is 'putting tho cart
beforo tlio horso. Thoy seom to thlnli
that tho way to opon tlio woolen mills,
for example, is to start n yard stick fac
tory. Thoy forgot that you must make
cloth beforo you can incisure It, mid that
tho woavor must bo employed before tho
yard stick Is required. Hut thoy say tho
yard stick Is too long. I answer if you
make n yard stick nlnoteon luohos Instoad

you will not increase tno output ot ciotn,

lugs of anybody, or enhance tho real valuo

"Nor will short dollars from wide open

hiding places, and find employment for
the irood men lillo at tlielr nomas, tnuu

tho creator of all wealth. Its active em

that way. Start tho factories in full blast
and tho monoy will How from bank and

of tho orchestra, which tho police kept
clear until after tho arrival of Mr. Uryan
and his party. Fully 5,000 peoplo were In
tho house, among them many of HrooU
lyn's prominent Domocrats, Including
Hugh McLaughlin, tlio local leader, and
tho members of tho county organization.
There wero fow prominent Now Yorkers
there, howovor. Uy 8 o'clock the crush
had become so thick that all tho doors to
tho Academy were closed, shutting out, a
clamoring crowd ot thousands who
thronged the ontiro block.
Junius I). Bell, chairman of the Kings
county Democracy, called the meeting to
order nnd introduced Judge William ,T.
Gnynor, of tho supreme court, as chair
man of tho meeting After Judgo Uay
nor's speech Senator P. H. McCarron, fcc
retary, read a sot of resolutions pledging
support to Ilrynn and Sowall, which wero
unanimously adopted.
bonator Mi-t'.irron had scarcely llnlshcd

tho volume of which shooK tno imllding

tho stage. The nolso continued unabatod
for six minutes, nt tho end of which tlmo
Mr. Uryan's raised hands dually brought
about order. Without delay ho stepped
to tho front of tho stago and delivered his
address, which was frequently interrupted
by onthusla-tio applause. A largo portion
of his speech was devoted to answering
tho attacks on tho planks of the Chicago
platform criticising tho supremo court
and fodurnl Interference. Ilo nunted largely
from President Lincoln to show that that
Republican leader and his platform had
been far more radical In utterances on
tho-o subjocts than was tho Chicago plat
form. Sir. Hryan's addross lasted an hour nnd I
half, i "d was concluded at 10:15 o'clock.
Uml, r t ie guidance of a local committee

however, tlio disappointed crowds who
failed to got entrance to tho hall shouted
for a speech, and from n rude platform tho
candidate niado a brief open air address.
Meanwhile, lnsldo tho hnll, Senator "Joo '

There has porhaps novor been such n
significant demonstration for William
Jennings Bryan In tho east as that given
last night lu Brooklyn by tho combined
labor Interests. It has been a mooted
qiiostlon whether tlio labor peoplo of the
east would respond to a call for a mass
meeting In favor of Mr. Ilryan, but there
was no mlstauu about tho demonstration
at tho Clermont rink.
The capacity of the building was esti
mated at 0,000, and overy available cornor
was filled with good natural humanity,
while thousands bosicged tho doors and
wero refused admission. It was a typical
labor gathering, and oven tho women and
children present wero flllod with tho en
thusiasm of tho occasion. It was also a
meeting far out of tho ordinary In its
method of procedure. Instead of the
formal Introduction nominating n presid
ing officer n clean cut man with gray hair
stepped to the front of tho platform
shortly beforo 8 o'clock and said:
"Will the nudlenco please tako from
tholr seats tho song that Is thero and join
In singing itf" And they responded so
heartily that tho refrain, "Vou hhall not
press the crown of thorns upon tho toll
ers' brow," rang against tho iinpHlntod

and when It was llninhod a mighty cheer
went up. And so It was throughout the
meeting, and whllirthoy were waiting for
tho arrival of Mr. Bryan, who was spouk

The meeting was presided over entirely
by labor organizations, and the stago con

labor organization.
When the meeting wns oalloil to order
every aisle and oaoh corridor wag crowded,
and when letters of regret were read from
Eugeno V. Debs and John W. Hayes, sec

Hesolutlous wore adopted commending

It was a few minutes after 10 o'olook
