Never in tho history of the borough have tlie peoplo of Shenandoah experienced such intense and bitter feeling, bordeiing on desperation, as was manifested yesterday when it beeaino known that Superintendent llogart bad been arrested by "Jack" Tool, upon a warrant sworn to by "Jim" .Smith "ou information leccivcd." Tho bitter feel ing was not caused so much because of the fact of Mr. llogart's arrest, as tho manner in which it was brought about and tho despotic refusal of Tool to cither accept ball, which was ollered in any amount demanded, or to allow Mr. liogart even time to make urcoamry piepHralions for tho journey to 1'ittsburg. Mr. liogart has always courted a thorough investigation. In fact, he has expressed him- Mf as only too willing to meet his accusers lulu court of justice. Those who bcllovo that the gentleman is a victim of persecution originated at Knoxville, are just as firm in their demand for a judicial determination of the case to-day as they Hero when tho elec tion and subsenucnt exoneration on the part of tlie School Hoard tpok place. They had hoped that the Milt instituted against James .1. rraney, for libel, would bo the means of clearing the atmosphere of any doubt that might exist. Kor this reason It was expected that tho minority members of the School Hoard, in stead of a iii.ui of no standing or responsi bility, would prove their assertions by a c runiual prosecution and give to that pro-y.-cediugs at least some lospectabillty. Tho animus of tho whole nllair is shown by the brutal t.'oatmcnt to which Mr. Hogart was ubjei tcdtised more liko a dog than a man if lespectability. I Clllzeii" Writes of the Outrageous plan ner ol the SupcrlnlniHlcnt's Arrest. LiilTOR IlMiAlt): To say that tho ro- spoctablo portion of our community, re gardless of cieod, were shocked at tho outrageous manner In which one "Jack" Toole made an arrost nftor tho manner of an Lngllsh red-jacket constable In an Irish eviction case, and railroaded' his victim to n far olf county in order to arrivo at an huur of tho night by which ho vvould havo tlio satisfaction of incarcerating his prisoner, even If it was only for three or four hours, is putting it very mildly. It was only a few days ago that this same Tool was seen Interviewing a certain rail road agent - and in u very earnest conversation carried on in an under tone if any one accidentally walked their way tho conversation ceased ho was evi dently planning for the quick railroad con nections by which ho would bo enabled to railroad his intended victim in as round about a way as possible. His plea that ho was willing to accept bail in tho court of Sun bury, and refused to go to his nearest and own county scat to cuter it, showed tho real animus of tho whole affair. Tho remark gleefully spouted out on tho public street by our ox-school oflicial that "Now wo havo him fast," as ho surveyed Supt. Hogart in front of tho Justice's olllco, and tho remark of that would-bo champion of morality, who is now charged with libel, "This means fif teen years in iail," shows woll how honest they are in this matter of their attempt to shoulder "morality" in a manner that out siders would infer they were tho protoypes of Dr. Parkhurst, of New York. Tho News in a column editorial would have tho public bcllovo that this was n spontaneous work of tho peoplo of tho town, and tint they hoped and trusted (?) that Mr. Hogart would bo enabled to prove himself Innocent. Their actions belie tlieir words. Let us see. Tlio man who wrote this edi torial was none other than the same man who presided at tlio "morality" meeting held some time ago by a certain portion ot our pop ulation. Who was ho V Why he's tho samo nan who a few weeks before went "bail" for prostitute whoso house had been raided in this town. What an excellent judgo of what constitutes "morality !" I uuny, isn t it, that there is a certain oliqtio in this town who are more interested in this case than is tlio family who nre directly nnuected. Strange, that our own honest, pright, would-be tax-oxoucrated "Jim" Smith, was obliged to mako this journey to Pittsburg in order to swear out a warrant in tho interest of this Vatos family, uono of horn were present at the time the warrant was made. Straugo that this same clique, some of whom nro wealthy and respected tizens of our borough, did not take thu placo ot Jimmy. Hut, then, you know If tho caso goes against him, there will bo no redress, as cither of thu two who are moving in the matter are worth a collectable cent, wliilo if property owner undertook tho same case, ho would be mulcted for costs and damages to character. Why did not the two responsible business men who interested themselves in this light long enough to spend their time going from oor to door soliciting cash contributions in rder that this fight might Iio carried ou to the bitter cud, so as to mako it as unpleasant us posslblo for Superintendent Hogart while in charge of our schools, go to Pittsburg and make tlio charge ? Ah, they knew that In case of failure, they would be held respon sible, so they placo two straw men iu charge f it from whom not one cent of damages could he collected. The uiinoiity side of the School Hoard are lot content with having more than their share of the teachers iu our public schools of the borough, but they would want tho superintendency. Tho trouble witli tho Cit izens members of tho Hoard is that they aro too lenient with the opposition. They allow their petty spito against each other to coruo iu between and thus allow the minority side o capture tho spoils. Ho men, gentlemen, and stand by the people who placed yon there. ClTIZif.
