IxmanapoLIS, Sept. 3. Forty-one stoto
nnd three territories, represented by 321
delegates, met yesterday In Tomllnson
Hall as tho climax of n six weeks campnlgn
to repudlato tho action of tho Chicago con
vention and put forth n declaration ol
principles and ntimo n presidential ticket.
Senator Palmer, who called tho body to
order, termed it tho first convention of the
National Democratic party, whilo others
referred to it as tho Domocrncy which held
Its Inst convention in 1803. Admission to
tho hnll was confined strictly to tlckot
holders. As a result many people wore
denied admittance.
Inside ovcry seat in tho spneo reserved
on tho lloor for tho delegates nud alter
nates was taken nnd tho galleries, excopt
on tho upper balcony In tho roar of tho hali
where tho band wnsl located, wero com
fortably well filled withoutbeing crowded,
whilo tho chairs in tho rear of tho plat
form reserved for tho distinguished guests
wore nearly nil occupied. Tho decorations
wero brilliant and lavish. There was a
profusion of flags and buutlng, trailing
smllnx, Spanish moss nud potted (lowers,
but tho most noticeable feature was the
prcvnlivco ofi gilt, symbolical of tho spirit
of tho conycutlon. Gold wreaths wero
everywhere In tho decorations, and half the
dclogatcs wore sprays of golden rod in tho
lapels of their coats.
There Was nn unusually largo number
of Indies it. tho galleries and In tho chairs
back of the stage, their bright gowns and
hats heightening tho general effect of tho
scono. Most of them wore from u dis
tnuco, but somo of tho most prominent
ladics of Indianapolis wero present. Mrs.
Hondrlcks, tho widow of Into Vico Pres
ident Hendricks, was especially conspic
uous. Altogether It was an Impressive
scono.
The delegates themselves wero nn Im
posing body of men. Among thorn wero
muny who havo for years ln'on prominent
In national affairs and tho counsels of tho
Democratic luirty. Tho big Nnw York
delegation-of seventy-two mom hers per
haps nttracto'l tho most attention. In
It wore such conspicuous men ns Governor
Flower, tho temporary chairman of the
convention; ox-Secretary Fairchild, ox-
Mlnlstor to Turkey Straus, (ieneral Tracy
01 finally, liorauou. iving, uoinnei .lonn
It. Fellows, Perry H. Uolmont, John De
witt Warner and others.
From the old Biy stato, thoro wore Dr.
Everett, tho son of Edward Everett, and
Godfrey Morso; Maine sent C. Vey Hol
man; Connecticut, ex-Congrossmnn Lowls
Sperry; New Jersey, W. J. Curtis; Penn
sylvania, General Plekett and Assistant
Secretary of tho Interior Hey nobis; Vir
ginia, Colonel Hooves, tho world famous
engineer; Kentucky, General Buckner,
W. II. Haldeinan and Colonel W. C. P.
Breckinridge; Ohio, ex-Congressmen
Outhwaite, Senoy and Haines; Illinois,
Senator Palmer, Contr 'ler Eckels and
ex-Mayor Hopkins: Wi-cunslu, General
Bragg and Senator V'lns; Minnesota,
Daniel W. Lawlor; Iovv Henry Yollinnr;
Missouri, Judge Bronv.nea I and F. Leh
man; California, John P. Irl-h; Colorado,
Louis H. Ehrlch; Louisiana, Senator Cnf
fery and John H. Spcllman; Alabama, J.
M. Faulkner and ox-Governor Jones;
Georgia, W. S. Thompson ; Washington,
Hugh C. Wnllaco.
There was plenty of enthusiasm, and
demonstrations wero numerous. Tho del
egates cheered at tho sight of prominent
men, in fact everything and anything.
Every referenco to Mr. Cloveland was tho
signal for a scene, during which men
cheered and waved whatever they could
get their hands on. Minlnturo flags found
their way out of mysterious recesses nud
were wildly waved on ovcry occasion.
Tho convention held two sessions, but
got no further than effecting tho perma
nent organization. Ex-Governor Flower,
tho temporary chairman, nnd Senator
Caffery, tho permanent chairman, both
delivered addressos, aud Dr. Everett, of
Massachusetts, aud John P. Irish, tho
Pnclllc coast orator, voiced tho spirit of
tho convention during Interims in tho
proceedings. There wus not a jar or hitch
anywhere.
Tho temper of tho dologntos wns dis
played in tho vigorous fashion with which
tho denunciation of tho Chicago platform
nnd Its candidates was received. Gov
ernor Flowor referred to Bryan ns an "am
bitious, unsteady and unsafe" man nnd a
"demagogue and word juggler," with "a
revolutionary horde behind him," nnd tho
rafters rang with tho npplauso. Governor
Flower's speech wjut somewhat exten
sively Into argument to show that bimet
allism as proposed by tho Chicago plat
form was a dream and that the gold stan
dard was responsible for high wages and
lo,v Interest rates un money.
Senator Caffery, in assuming tho gavol
ns permanent chalrmnn, made a very ef
fective speech In tho nature of an appeal
for the life of the "old Domooraoy." Ho
painted tho Domocrnoy at Chicago as lu
diilurlnff in a doliaueh. But he said reason
must return, and hn appealed from "Do- j
inoorncy drunk to Democracy sober, and
asked the convention to again "unfurl tho
Hag never yet soiled by repudiation or
stained with dishonor." "While Democ
racy lasts," he said at tho climax of his
speech, "the republic will last, and while
the republlo lasts, human liberty."
Dr.Everett made a stirring speech against
sectionalism, and John P. Irish Ukeued
tho "silver Democratic party" nnd the He
publlcan party to twin daughters of tho
horso leech, both seeking to ralso the price
of tho necessaries of life. In concluding
he predicted that if this convention did
not succeed lu vanquishing both It would
at least leavo ono without a sister.
Perhaps tho most Important action
taken by tho convention yesterday was the
adoption of a recoipmondatlou to make
the organization pormnuont, and to em
power tho national committee appointed
to call future conventions. Thlslndlcatos
n contest four years fropi now over tho
regularity qt the two organizations, and
may provo far reaching In its effects.
Last night n great mass meeting wns
held, whilo ono set of loaders wore at work
framing the platform and another trying
to fix upon a candidate. Thoro seems to
bo an almost unanimous sontlmont lu
favor of General BucUnor, of Kentucky,
for vice president, but tho contest for pres
ident is still open Although Gonernl
Bragg has beou soonilngly In tho lend,
powerful Influences am at work to defeat
hlin. His receptiou yesterday lu thy con
vention wo., i rtlnppottitment tn his
friends. It was not as enthusiastic ns they
thought It should be.
A strong effort Is being mndo to bring
out Senator Palmer or General John C.
Black of Illinois, and Secretary Morton of
Nebraska, and D.ivld Lnwlorof Mlnnosotn,
nro enjoying incipient honors. Senator
Palmer does not desire tho nomination,
nnd there Is said to lie a letter here from
Secretary Morton declining to permit the
uo of his name. Were General Bragg not
In the way Senator Vilas might 1h named,
but ho absolutely refuses to consider the
question as longns General Uraggls In tho
field. Wntterson's boom does not grow.
Tho Illinois delegation held a meeting
last night, and decided to present tho
namoof Senator Palmer for president If
tho senator would allow this action to lie
tnkon. In case of his refusal It was de
termined to plnco General John C. Black
In nomination.
It Is positively stated that unless some
thing Is heard from President Clevelnnd
to the contrary that his name will lie pre
sented to tho convention for president.
Tho Florida delegation adheres to its de
termination to placo licforothe convention
Mr. Cleveland's namo. As tho state is
well up on tho list on tho call of states for
nomination of candidates, fow nomina
tions can be inndo before Mr. Cleveland's
namo is mentioned, nnd there is a possi
bility of astampedoln hisdlrcetlon unless
tho delegates are aware that It Is contrary
to his wish. In thtsconneetion ltis stated
that tho Now York delegation might lie
placed In a very embarrassing position,
and It Is understood that Chairman Grlf
fin, of New York, has telegraphed the
president desiring to know what his wishes
are.
