Many residents of tlio town will regret to
learn of the death of John O. Davis, nn old
and highly icected citlwui. Ho died last
evening at his homo on South West street,
aged (17 years, after suflcrlii); a neck from
pneumonia. The deceased was n man who
commanded tlie esteem of all with whom ho
mnde acquaintance and had the tepntatloii of
IicIiik one of tho best rend mon in tlio
county. He was aho an experienced
traveler nnd In social intercourse his general
knowledge coiniimndid admiration. Mr.
l.i is was brought to this country from South
Wales, (I. II., when two years of ago by his
paients who limited In Mltiersvlllo. In lhl
be came to Shenandoah and became a eoal
operator. He bad a small colliery on tlio
western outskirts of tlio town and prospered
for some time, but, with many others, went
down In tho financial crash of 1875. Mr.
Davis served two terms of three years as a
member of tho local School Hoard, several
years on the public library committee, and
was also a nroniinent local secret society
man, having been a charter member
and Past Master of tho Masonic Lodge
and Shenandoah Lodgo No. 001, I.
O. O. K. In Ids travels during his
early years Mr. D.ivis traveled through
California. British Columbia, Nova Scotia,
South Sen Islands and Australia. Ho wa3
carried to California by the gold fever of '40
and devoted 1(1 years to gold mining in Cali
fornia, Nevada, British Columbia and Aus
tralia. Tho deceased is survived by his wife
and three step-sons, Arthur, John and School
Director William T. Trezlse, and also by a
biuther, Bbcne?cr Davis, of Pittsburg, nnd u
sister, Mrs. Sarah Mainwarlng, of Duryea,
Pa. The arrangements for the funeral will
bo announced to-morrow.

Saturday evening at her residence 331 Last
Lloyd street, from general debility, oho was
01 years of ago and is survived by her hus
band and three sons, illiam, of town
Frederick, of Norwood, N. J., Lnndelin, of
Jersey City, N. J., and two doughtcrs. Misses
Lizzie, of town, and Margaict, of Boston,
Mass. The funeral will takeplaoeon Wednes
day morning. Services in the German
Catholic church.

Edward, son of John Jenkins, of 200
North Union street, died on Saturday oven
itig nt the homo of Ids parents, aged 10 years,
0 months and 0 days. Ho succumbed to
typhoid fever and, although a young man of
good physiquo and habits, fell an easy
victim to tho disease Tho funeral will tako
place to-morrow morning at 0:30 o'clock. Tlio
deceased wan a brother of John 1). Jenkins,
the baritone singer, who played an engage'
inent at Tumbling Hun i.ist week. Harry, a
23-ycar-old brother, is now suffering from the
fever.

Maud, wife of Samuel S. Steinbach, died
yesterday morning at her homo in Lost
Creek from typhoid pneumonia, after nn ill
ness of ono week. Tho deceased was 22 years
of ago and is survived by her husband and a
son six wcoks old. Tho funeral will tako
place on Wednesday, leaving Lost Creek for
Pottsvillo on tho 12:45 p. m. Lehigh train,
Interment will bo mado in the Charles liaber
cemetery at Pottsvillo. Mrs. Steinliach was
a grand-daughter of Col. D. P. Brown, Super
intendent for tho Lehigh Coal & Navigation
Company, and daughter of A. D. Brown,, uh
ollicial under the same company. Hi November
1S01, she was united in marriage to tsamuel
S. Steinbach, an engineer on tho Lehigh Val
ley civil engineering corps' and tho couplo
were living hapriily in a handsomely fur
nished homo at Lost Creek. Mrs. Steinbach
was a favorito in many circles and her death
is deinly regretted.

Avonuo, was rolling a hoop last ovonlng on
South alley when a Polo named Miko Klinck
tripped him up. Before tho boy fell another
Pole, named Alex. Seven, stepped up and
kicked tho boy on the temple. Tho victim
was attended to bv Dr. Bissell. Tlio l'oles
were arrested and aro held tonwalttho result
of tho injuries. It is not thought they will
provo fatal. A report got abroad that tho
boy had been murdered and created much
excitement.
Iho public schools of this borough re
opened tills morning. Thoro aro 142 pupils
in tho High school, an unusually largo
attendance. Tho enrollments in tho other
schools aro fair.

year ending June 30, 1S00, it is shown that
there are IWscparate schools In tho archdiocese,
having ai enrollment of 30,000 pupils. Tho
number of pupils at tho beginning of tho
year was 34,253, and at tho cud of tho year
61,852. Tho average attendanco during tho
year was 32,100; tho number of teachers, 010;
tho average number of pupils to a teacher, 52.

Unfortunate Occurrence.
While the Harvest Homo services wero in
progress in the Trinity llefornied church last
evening tho incandescent lights suddenly
went out, leaving the congregation in dark
ness until oil lamrs could bo procured. It
was explained by tho ollicials of tho electric
light company this morning that tho occur
rence was duo to a shoit circuit in tlio church
brought about by changing tho location of tho
lights in making the decorations.

men participated in a century run yesterday,
from Pottsvillo to Beading via Hamburg, to
Lebanon, via Wouiclsdorf, to Pinegrovo and
home, about 103 miles. They covorcd tho
dlstanco in about fifteen hours, allowing de
ductions for meals, sightseeing nnd accidents.
Thero wero only five who finished without
accident to their bikes.
Harvest Homo.
Tho interior of the Trinity Reformed
church presented a splendid appearance last
evening, tho chancel and altar being clali
orately decorated with fruits, llowers and
grain of tho season in commemoration of
Harvest Homo services. A sparkling fun
taiu in full play and a realistic ininiaturo
water mill scene wero striking features in the
midst of the decorations. A small stream of
water kept tho wheel of tho mill in opera
tiou. Itov. Hubert O'Boylo, tho pastor,
preached an excellent harvest sermon.

Tho Board of Examiners who recently
conducted an examination of aspirants for
tho inspectorship of tho Uazletou district,
mado vacant by tho resignation of Inspector
James Roderick, havo recommended tho

Coal Kxchnimo office building, tho ex
change olllco and tho retail storos under
neath wero damaged by firo yesterday
morning, causing $150,000 worth of dam
ago. Tho lira started In tho elevator shaft
from some unknown origin nnd burned
savagely for four hours. Tho building
was erected In 1885 nt a cost of $130,000,
and was tho first largo olllco structure in
Scranton. Its front and other walls aro
uninjured, but tho upper floors and roof
nro practically ruined.
