Hi' tho United State.
"I assert that behind the gold standard
In this country tho only potent forco con
sists of those who hold fixed Investments
and those who ns brokers profit tho greater
by moro bond Issues. They tell the labor
ing man of tills nation that they ought
to support a gold standard. J lie laboring
men hnro never found the financiers of
this nation tho nicu who have exerted
themselves to lmprovo tho condition of tho
laboring man.
. "As a rulo tho men who havo spoilt their
time trying to break down labor organi

man has had these are tho men
who now come to tho help of tho laboring
man. I ask you if you ought to expect
blessings from those from whom you have
only received cursings In the past? I no
tice that ono of our opponents tho other
day said that tho old soldiers would bo
opposed to froo coinage. They gave tho
impression that tho financiers aro very
much Interested in maintaining a gold
standard for tho benefit of tho soldiers;
but, my friends, tlieso men forget that all
of tho soldiers lived during tho war, and
that during tho war tho soldiers know
that the financiers mado tholr bonds pay

Ills llfo upon tho battlefield. Moro than
that, my friends, I do uot bcllovo that tho
soldiers who aro willing to offer tholr
lives if need bo In behalf of their country
lire today going to join in n conspiracv to
enslave seventy millions of freo people by
fettorlng them to a gold standard."
The crowd which followed Mr. Ilryan's

tho strong forco of pollco which had boon
thrown about tho building and yard, nnd
closed In upon tho carriage, so that tho

by tho members of her Immediate fiitnih ,

tho grent reception room at "Tho Ureak

daughter of Cornelius Vanderbllt, was
wetltleil yesterday to Harry I'ayne Whit

tho navy, William C. Whitney. Tho cere

George J. Maglll, rector of Trinity church,
assisted by lllshop Potter. The bishop not
bolus a resldont of tho state, prevented
him from tying the knot.
Cornelius Vanderbllt gave Ids dnughtcr
nwny In person. He reclined on nn Invalid
chair, and was whoelod up to where tho
bridal couple stood. Tho bridesmaids were
Miss Kmlly Vanderbllt Sloane, Miss I.Ua
Sloane, llrst cousins to the brldo; Miss
F.dith Shepard, Miss Minnie Taylor nnd
Miss Angelica Gerry. The best man wns
I'ayno Whitney, tho brother of the bride
groom. It was a wedding conspicuous for
Its simplicity and grandeur Newport
novcr saw a wedding Just like It, and will
probably not see its Uko again for main- a
day. Though tho Vanderbllt familv has
spoilt ninny years at this Mecca of fashion,
and number among their friends and ad
mirer so many of their own circle, none
of these friends wero guests nt tho wed
ding. It was a family affair.
Tho hands of tho clock on tho tower of
tho cnpitol building had worked their
way round to the 12:20o'clock mark before
tho last coach pulled up under th" pnrto
eochoro nnd furnished tho'rlocessary guests
to 1111 out the limited list. Inside theie
wns a solomnlty which was almost op
pressive. The bridesmaids nnd thu brldo
prepared fur the march down stairs In the
room of Gladys Vanderbllt, which faces
to the east. That young lady herself and
Dorothy Whitney, sister of tho bride
groom, hooded the procession, which
moved to tho llrst landing on tho open
staircase, which is about fourteen feet
broad. They waits 1 here hut a minute
fortho bridegroom and ushersnntl, arrang
ing themselves on the platform, the brldo
and groom took tho remaining twenty-one
steps together. At tho bottom of tho
stairs Hishop l'ottcr and Dr. Magill joined
in and led tho way to tho dotal altar In
tho reception room.
Tho general effect of tho bridal proces
sion as conveyed by tho costumes of the
ladlos was pink, ns that color showed pre
dominantly In thobeltsaround tho bodices
and In tho llowcrs. Tho brldo's dross It
self wns pint) whito watered silk, with old
duehosso lace and pearl trimmings. It was
cut moderately, and looked quite plain,
but rich. It was tho creation of a Paris
itrossmakcr. Tho costumes of the brides
maids were much more elaboratJ and
picturesque. Tho brldo carried plnkrosef,
nnd tho bridesmaids carried pink rosoi
and lilies of tho valley tied with a broad
pink satin ribbon. Mr. Whitnoy wore u
boutonnloro of gardenias, nnd tho ushers
woro lilies of the valley. Tho ceremony
wns performed In an alcove formed by
lilies nnd Aitgusta ictorla roses hutwosn
the pillars. The bride and groom knelt
upon a qushion oomp.o 1 of whito sweet

Many magnillcent presents wero re

which exceeds anything In size and brll

almost equal in beauty and valuu of Cul

pearl of which is about tho size of a pon.
The necklace when about the bride's neck
readied to tho floor. Mr. W. K. Vanderbllt
gave a single immense ruby.
Miss Gertrudo Vanderbllt Is nn attrac

fresh, rosy complexion and dark brown
