A Narrow leupe.
All accident was barely averted Monday
night on tho Pennsylvania railroad, on tho

tho Mahanoy City Record. As, tho train.
which loaves Pottsvillo at 8:05, pulled nut
from Dark Water, tho engineer noticed
lllckeriug light of warning on tho track
ahead. It was u miner, 011 his way from

give the signal had struck a match, and suc
ceeded by its feeblo blazo in attracting tho
eaglo eye of tho engineer. Tho train was
brought to a standstill, and tho miner
boarded tho engine, witli tho story on his
lips that a stray horse, which had been
grazing in a near field, had walked along tho
trestlo from tho east sido to near tho eentro
of tho bridge,, whero tho animal missed its
footing and fell, witli its forelegs on tho
outer sldo of the rail, and its body dangling
between tho tracks. An investigation proved
tho story to bo true Had tho train struck
tho animal it would have plunged over tho
bridge with its load of human freight, down
ouo hundred feet to tho tracks below. A
chain was placed around tho body of tho
animal, tho end of which was attached to
tho locomotive, and in this manner tho horse
was dragged to solid ground. Tho train then
passed over tho bridgo iu safety, being de
layed one hour. It was a narrow escape
