1'iTTnm-no, Aug. 11. Tho trip of Wil
liam J. Hrynn from Chicago to Pittsburg
was a continuous ovation. At every sta
tion where tho trnln sto)K)d crowds ot
p.oplo were In wnltlnp; to greet tho cnndl
elate. Wherever tlio train stojiped long
enough to permit It tho Xobrnskn orator
Was obliged to yield to demands for 11
speech nnd to submit to a hand shaking
ordenl. Tho reception accorded Mr. Hrynn
lu this city provosn fitting onpshonf of tho
day's triumph. It has excited tho amaze
ment of tho pooplo of l'ittsburg, nnd tho
joy Hint It has nfforded Mr. Iiryainujd tho
redoubtable "Silver Dick" Dlnnd lini
manifested Itself in their booming features
since they struck tho city limits.
The Oxcoptlonnlly largo trnln on thn
Pennsylvania Central, which It was nl
most linposslblo to traverse during the
last 11X3 miles bocnuso of tho numerous
committees and enthusiasts who had
boarded and spread thomsolvotout over
tho carriages, ran Into the Pittsburg de
pot nt S .'Ml p. m. When Mr. Hrynn emerged
from tbo train, In splto of tho efforts of
tho largo local commlttoo to carry out Its
program, the crowd closed nround him
and It wusn freo for nil fight from that
tlmo on for every person lu tho Brynn
nnrty except Mr. nnd Mrs. Hrynn and Mr.
and Mrs. Bland. When they entered their
carriages tho relentloss throng closed
around them and seemed to bear thont
nlong ut Its will.
Through tho various streets traversed
110 available spneo could bo discerned.
Every foot of ground nlong tho way was
occupied by cnthuslnsts. When tho Cen
tral hotel wits reached a cordon ot police
was statlonod nt tho main entrance nnd
formed 11 narrow passageway leading to
the staircase. No ono was ollowodto trend
It unless he could show unmlstaknblo cre
dentials. There were police on tho stairs,
police lu tho halls, police nt the dining
room door nnd everywhere else where men
nnd women might sock to go, and oven nt
thodoor.of Mr. Bryan's room. Whllo Mr.
nnd Mrs. Bryan were supping with 11 com-
lnlttco of ladles and gentleinon tho streets
resounded with tho continuous clamor
from thousands of throats. Many inarch
ing clubs pierced the stubborn crowds,
nmid showers of pyrotechnics nnd n roar
that would have rivaled Niagara's thun
ders. Tho ovenlng meeting had been an
nounced to occur at S o'clock lnthefiriind
Opera IIouso and tho Aventio theater,
kindred halls, side by side, mid owned by
tho samo parlies. Each halt will sent be
tween 8,800 and 3,000, and meetings wcro
to bo held In each. Long beforo tho hour
for opening tho doors tho entire street
front of theso structures was packed full
along tho enllro block, nnd nftor tho doors
had been opened nnd tho structure were
filled tho crowd outsldo had suffered little
porceptlblo diminution.
A corps of about iv hundred policemen
was on duty nt tho various ontrancos, mid
In tho courso of the early evening thero
was an Incipient riot, in which ono man
was severely beaten and some of tho of
ficers had their brass buttons torn olt.
When Mr. and Mrs. Ilryim mid mem
bers of their party rode around from tho
hotel and entered tho first hall both of
them were packed to their full standing
room capacity, and half who applied had
not been admitted. The crowd lingered
outsldo In noisy but peaceful disappoint
ment, sluglng, cheering and burning red1
fire, and 11 tolerablo ralh that camo soon
lifter tho speaking began dlmlnlshedlt but
little, tho street remaining full until tho
meetings closed.
At the first meeting Mr. Bryan was In
troduced by Mr. Jamos Mills, editor of tho
Pitt-burg Post. In tho course of his
speech, which was frequently interrupted
by applause, ho said:
"I thought It might bo nocossary In
coming so fnr towards tho cast to bring n
few of our pooplo to keep up tho ontlusl
asm while I prosonted the. truths set forth
In tho Democratic platform. But nftcr
I havo seen a fow uudieneos llko this I
wondprod If I might not take back a fow
of you to set an example of, enthusiasm to
tho peoplo of tho west. There Is no moro
'wild west' ; It Is tho wild east.
"When I left homo I told them that I
was coming upon a campaign In what was
now considered tho onemy's country, but
which wo hoped would bo our country be
foro tho campaign closed. Therefore I
liavo been moro than gratified to ilnd that
It was not necessary to open tho campaign
in the east; It has already been oponod
thero. But I shall promise you this, that
In tho progress of ths campnlgu not a
single prlvnto In tho ranks will stand
closer to tho enemies' guns than ho In
whoso hands is tho standard.
"Wo nro prepared to dofemV our plat
form. It presents, as wi bellevo, those
pollclos which ore for tho boot Intorocts of
nil the pooplo, and wo lira not terrified be
cause ourcncmlos have sought to npply to
us epithets and hard nainos when thoy
find it Imposslblo to opposo tho positions
which wo have tukon. Thoy shall not lx
permitted to put us In tho nttltudo of op
ponents to govuruineut, but we shall show
thorn that thero is a difference between
defending a government and defending
the vicious legislation Inaugurated by tho
government for private cuds.
"I havo said that lu this contest wo hnvo
n repetition of tho ooutustof 1770, ami that
in this campaign, as in that, 11 lino will
bo drawn lietweon the patriot and the
tnry, anil when I say It I do not say It, my
frlends, to criticize the man who believes
that this nation Is not groat enough to
