Atlaxtio City, Aug. 7. Tho Inst sos
filon of Coroner MoLnughllu's inquest
Into tho meadow disaster of last Thurs
day nlRht, which l'gannt 2 o'clock yester
day nftornoon, soveral timos threatened
to pruro sensntlonal. Whon tho six jurors
rotircd to deliberate upon their verdict,
however, responsibility for tho forty-four
donths had boon no moro llrmlyflxod than
nt tho opcnliiR of tho inquest on Monday
morning. Only ouo fact remains undis
puted, and that Is that Edward Farr, on-
cjineer of tho Heading train, who (ilea
with his hand on tho throttlo, disregarded
tho dnngor signals and thundered on to
his own destruction. It has boon equally
demonstrated, howovor, that ho made a
Inst despernto effort to roverso his onglno
whou he saw that a collision was Immi
nent, but then it was too lato.
Suspicion has been strongly dlreotod
against Georgo F. Ilauser, Jilght oporntor
nt tho tower whero tho wreck occurred,
but nothing moro than suspicion. lie has
doclnred that ho touched no liquor that
day, was at his post of duty, and although
he luew the Heading train had always
had the right of way, assorted that ho had
Uecd his best Judgment in flagging It this
night nnd giving a clear track to tho slow
Vost Jersey oxcurslon train, bocauso It
was noaror tho crossing. Moro than this,
ho emphatically refuted tho intimation
inndo by a witness on Wednesday that ho
hud first given tho Heading tho right of
way and then quickly changed it when
too Into to avert danger.
A sensation was created whon Prosecu
tor I'erry questioned Nicholas Long, tho
day toworman. He nskod if ho had ever
slept whllo on duty, and receiving nn In
dignant dpnlal demandod to know who it
was who, slocplng In tho tower about two
weeks ago, brought an oxpress to a stand
still nnd compelled tho crews to go and
wako him up. Ho denied all knowledge
of such nn occurrence.
A. E. Luce, engineer of tho 4 p. m. Kond
lng train from Philadelphia, tho fastest on
tho lino, tostlflcd that when approaching
tho crossing ho blow ono blast for a signal
nnd two in acknowledgment of a clear
track, but if ho rccclvod no signal ho would
npply tho brakes. Ho could stop his train
in 2,500 feot after tho brakes wero put on.
IIo did not answer a fixed signal, and the
danger signal being tho normal one, was
regarded as a fixed ono. In answer to a
juror ho assorted that ho paid no attention
to a Camden and Atlantic train which
might cross the meadows with his train.
Ho hud enough to do to nuiko his own
time. Ho understood that Heading trains
had tho right of way at tho crossing, but
only when they wero given tho clear sig
nal. He would use judgment in spltoof
signals. If ho saw another train coming
and thought it was moving too fast to be
stopped ljcforo reaching tho crossing he
would stop his regardless whether the
signal gave him tho right of way or not.
Ho could not see a signnl moro than a mile
nwny.
Thomas Bodell, n West Jcrsoy engineer,
testified that In an uninterrupted view he
could Fco a signnl two miles away, and an
engineer who could not oughtto havo his
eyes examined. Ho oxplnined tho usos ol
the blast whlstlos, and said ho would con
sider that an engineer vlolnted his duty if
he blew tho whistle at a fixed signal.
This ended tho verbal testimony, nmlnn
adjournment was taken until today. The
jury will gu to tho Sanutarluin to try ami
got a deposition from Conductor Kelly.
Tho record of tho last physlcirt examina
tion of Farr by tho railroad company will
also be secured to learn the condition ol
his cyos. The case will then go to the jury.

IiiR with r-onntor Hill la said to havo been
a cordial one. To a iicrsonal friend, Tho
World says, Senator Jones remarked sig
nificantly, "Hill is nil right."
Iho chairman, nccordlnir to Iho v orld,
had become somewhat anxious over tho
continued silence of tho senn tor from New
York upon tho present nuestlon He do.
sired to find out exactly where the senntor
stood and how lonji ho was going to stuiitl
there. Mr- Gardiner, It Is said, made the
arrangements for Wednesday night's visit ,
at tho Instance of Senator Gorman. Neither
of tho principals cured to have the matter
reach, tho newspapers. 31r. Jones lilnoti
with Mr. Hill nt the N'ormundle nnd met
Stnto Chairman Hlnkley nnd John R

Tho World's nrtlclo continues: "Mr.

and of tho contest that had been going on
In his own niludas to his duty as a Demo

It Is said, he told Senator Jonos the New

Hill, It is reported, told Senator Jones that
ho would stand by tho action of his own

nominee. That, he thought, Is all that
could bo linked of him."
The World's article then coutlnues to
sav that Senator Jonos received tho In

Commenting upon tho presence of John
H. Stunchllcld at Xorinaudle, Tho World
says that It was nearly ns much of an
event politically ns was tho visit of Na

Ilelmont has bolted thu Chicago ticket,
and Is no longer considered a guberna

When Senator Hill returned trom Chi
