Kkv WMT, Fin., July 20. The Sln
Snrtls, tinder General Sunruz Inclnn, hnvo
sustained a crushing defeat at tho hands
of the Insurgents under Antonio Maceo,
according to advices received by tho Ctl
U,u revolutionary lenders In this city. Not
only was Inclan's column dofented with
heavy loss, but the Culxin lenders are in
formed that R is currently reported in
Havana that the Swinish general himself
was captured and Is now held us a pris
oner by Maceo.
Tho battlo is said to have occurred on
July 15, near Mucoo's stronghold In tho
provlnco of Plnar del Rio. For tho last
two wivks tho Insurgents have lieen very
aggressive, and small parties have repeat
edly attacked tho trochu, causing the
Spaniards much annoyance. General In
clan was ordered to drlvo liack thee de
tached hands of Insurgents, and for this
purpose took with Jilm 2,000 men.
Macoo seems to have expected such a
movement, and arranged to ambush tho
Spaniards. Ho stationed a largo force In
a favorable position and ordered his de
tached bauds to draw Iuclan intu tho trap.
Tho Spaniards followed tho Insurgent
skirmishers incautiously and fell into the
ambush.
Then tho Culmns ojiened lire from all
sides, which threw tho Spanlartlslnto con
fusion. While tho Spaniards were thus
disordered tho Cubans charged, completely
routing their foes. General Inclnn made
a desiHsrato effort to rally his demoralized
forces, but was surrounded by the Cubuus
and compelled to surrender.
It Is said in Havana, according to tho
revolutionists here, tbut the Spaniards
were pursued almost to thetrochn, and
lost more than HQO men killed und wound
ed. There were fourteen officers among
tho killed. Culmns here also say thut Ma
ceo will hold Iuclan ns a hostage to save
the lives of prominent liisin-gout officers
who have Iwm captured by the Spaniards.
One of these officers Is Capote. If this
rebel tender Is shot by tho Spaniards it'ls
said Iuclun will meet the name fate ut the
hands of Maeoo.
