with doctors nnu olllcers of tho roail on
board, was sent out from Council HlutTs.
Luto information received at 1 o'clock was
to tho effect that tho dead and dying weru
piled along tho tracks In tho switch ynrds
lit Logan like cord wood. There were a
few doctors on tho ground, but not enough
to glvo attention to one-third of tho suf
ferers. Among tho dead anil dying, relatives
were hunting for their friends anil thoso
who wero dear to thorn. In this city tho
olllco of tho road was ljolng besieged by
people In march of Information, but nouo

There aro broken nomas and bleeding
hearts ovcrywhoro, and sorrow reigns
supremo. Never did a day of pleasure oml
with more awful disaster. Twenty-eight
tieoplo woro klllod and llfty-ono Injured,
many of whom will die. Twenty-four of
tho dead are Identified, and tho others are
H) badly mutilated thnt ldentiflcttlon is
hardly ossiblo.
Tho list of tho Injured Is a lengthy ono. 1
It contains twenty-eight or more of names
of persons who were seriously hurt, dan-
gorously so, to greater or loss degree, in
addition there were at least fifty, if not a
greater numlwr, who recclvoiliiijurlos of a
minor nature. A considerable number
also wero shaken up severely, but hoyonil
this were uninjured. This wns especially
tho caso among tho passengers who oc
cupied tho cars lmmeiliately behind tho
ono which was demolished. Tho incidental
fright, combined with tho shock, throw
both moil and women Into hysterics, but
owing to tho work thnt dovolvcil upon tho
physicians in caring for tho desperately
hurt, such individuals woro left without
medical attention anil got over their at
tacks as liest they could.

Cosgrovo, aged 14; Margaret Cosgrovo,
aged 24, Mrs. 1'. J. Carroll and boyasrod
6, Mrs. Kato Hrailley and baby, John Kln
soy, Fred Neilsen, John H. Kilker, Pat
rick Scully and Miss Mary Tracy.
In addition to theso tho following resi
dents of other towns were klllod, increas
ing tho list to twenty-dvo, but thero aro
still three or four not accounted for. Two
of tho doctors who went to the scene from
Omaha state that they counted tho dead
bodies, one placing tho number at twenty
eight and tho other at twenty-nine. Tho
list of dead from other towns Is as follows ;
Charles Helman, Missouri Valley ; Wal
ter Jennings, Missouri Valley; Ceorgo
Welnlngcr, Morrison, Ills. ; Lawrence
Petcro, Council Iilulls; Miss Olllo Wil
son, Council Hluffs; Mrs. Taylor and
baby, Council Dlulls.
Of tho more seriously Injured some will
dlo, somo will bo confined to beds for
weeks and months, whllo somo arc, in
compr-rlson, but slightly Injured. Tho
wounds range from surface cuts to in
ternal Injuries which must result in death.
Among tho more seriously injured nro:
Robert Buchtel, left log fractured; Mrs.
Robert Buchtel, severe contusions on tho
faco and forehoail, noso broken and arm
badly Injured; Mrs. Scully, of Sheeley,
fractured several ribs and injured in tho
chest; EvaNoilson, very badly Injured In
tornally, condition serious; Leonard
Mack, Injured In the abdomen nnil groin,
condition critical; Andrew Ncilson, urm
broken; Joromo A. Little, ribs fractured
and internal Injuries, will probably die;
John McKcnnu, Internal Injuries, serious.

broken ; Mary Arnold, loft leg and arm
torn off ; Lona Hubert, head crushed.
Tho wrockod train was the first section
of a picnlo which had been hold nt Schil
ler Park, ubout twelvo miles wet of tho
city. Tho picnlo was hold under tho aus
plcos of the Anclont Order of United
Workmen, and fully 3,000 (leoplo wero in
attendance. Tho first section consisted of
thlrtoon cars, and left tho park shortly
after 8 o'clock for tho return trip to tho
city.
All tho o ars wore densely crowded, and
many pcoplo wero standing on tho plat
form of tho cars. When tho train reached
Alteuholm comotory, ton miles from tho
city, It ran upon a siding where n train of
empty coaches wns standing waiting for a
clear track In order that It might pull up
to tho picnlo ground for n load of picnick
ers, Tho picnlo train did not strike tho train
on tho siding with great force, but the
force of the collision was sufficient to jam
tho first coach up ngalnst tho baggage car
In such a way as to partially teloscopo it.
Tho poopla who wero klllod were all stand
ing on the platform of tho llrst coach, und
their lives wero crushed out by tho roar
end of tho baggage car.

that provided for meetings practically

them. About eighty of the pulpits of tho
city wero filled yesterday by tho visiting
clergymen nt tho 11 o'clock services.
Tho day lwgan, as havo all slnco tho
convention formally opened on Thursday,
with early morning prayer meetings In
over thirty of the churches, presided over
by the presidents of tho locul Christian
I'.ndeavor societies In tho respective
churches. Tho topic assigned for discus
sion at theso gatherings was prayer and
bible study "I will mako It tho rule of my
llfo to pray and read tho Illblo every day."
Theso wero followed by tho Sunday school
sessions nt 0:110 o'clock and later by tho
regular church services at 11 o'clock.
I ho missionary spirit was thokevnotoof
tho services held for nn hour during the
afternoon. Xot less than twenty-eight
distinct denominational rallies were, held
in Ixith tho colored and white churches
nnd tents. The largest gatherings wero
In tho mammoth tents on tho White lot,
where the jreoplo met in large audiences.
Tho Itaptlsts probably had the largest
reunion In Tent Washington, where ltev.

brunches of the Presbyterians and Meth

ron, United Evangelical and Welsh. The
Methodist Kplscopal, M. E. South and
Methodists in Canada held a joint rally at
the Mount Vernon church, where tho prin

Central Hall, over which Hov. Theodore
