Samuel C. Carpenter, of Enston, charged

Sunday night the rainfall iu tho interior
was very heavy, nud about 2 o'clock yes
terday morning thoro was so much rntn
that It approached a cloudburst In vol
ume The various creeks, Including Big
and Iiittlo Wheeling crooks, Littlo Grnvo
creek, Jim's run, on tho West Virginia
sldo of tho river, and Wheeling creek nnd
other tributaries on tho Ohio side, sent
out nu immense nmount of water. Tho
water was speedily out of hanks. Farm
housos wcro washed from foundations,
stock drowned, growing crops destroyed,
nnd there were many narrow escapes f roir
death in tho raging waters.
Wheeling creek put out into tho Ohio so
furiously that up bound towbonts wcro
unahlo to stem tho tide, nnd had to tlo up
lielow tho city. Tho llaltlmoro and hlo
depot oxtonds over tho mouth of tho creek,
nnd was soon seen to ho In danger, ns tho
water was carrying nwny tho foundations
of tho pier nt tho north sldo. All cars and
property of vnluo wero taken nwny and
tho people wnrned of tho danger. At 11 :30
ii. m. tho cast span went down, and car
ried with It tho rnllroad brldgo to tho.
west, further up tho crock tho trestlo
work of tho Wheeling Terminal road wns
carried away, nnd J. H. Rosenberg, tin
aged contractor, wns enrried down with
tho wreck. Ho was rescued by spectators.
Twelve, miles below this city, nt Mou nds
vlllo, tho damage was qulto severe. The
stool bridges of tho Ohio river nnd llaltl
moro and Ohio ronds wcro enrriod nwny,
tho current being so swift that the Ohio
river bridge was sent to the nilddlo of tho
Ohio river. Up Little Gravo creek, a hotel
in tho oil field was curried off Its founda
tions, but no lives wcro lost Tho Ohio
river road Is now using n steamboat
tween Wheeling and Sloundsvillo for haul
ing passengers, trains for tho south start
ing ut the latter point. Tho Haltlmoro and
Ohio is blocked from heeling to Urofton,
nnd its east bound passenger trains nro
going by way of l'lttsburg. Tho loss to the
two railroads naniod Is about 20,000.
On I'ipo crock, in Ohio, opposite Mounds-
vlllo, two persons lost their lives. Tho
homo of Johu Perry wns washed down
tho crook into tho river nnd Mm Perry und
her mother wero drownod. Mr. Perry had
a narrow escnr.o.
Information wns received this morning
of another fatality. The 8-yenr-old daugh
ter of Peter Richie, living on Turkey run,
was drowned early yesterday morning.
Tho houso was swept nwny, nnd tho child
was caught In tho wreckage and killed.

interfered with. Tho wires on tho lino of
tho Rondlng nnd Columbia railroad uro

arrived hero several hours late, and by

ing tho ground in soma placos. In tho
town of Manhelm, a fow miles south of
Lltitz, it is reported that boys wero swim
ming in tho streets.
A bad washout occurred litfttveen Man
helm and Litltz, tho track lieing Under
mined nnd swept uway for a conslderabld
distanco, nnd tho passenger train from
Rending, duo hero at 7:55 last ovening, is
held nt Lime Rock, unablo to proceed. A
relief train has been sent from hero, but
its progress is unknown by tho railroad
nuthorltlos, it being impossiblo to roach
Manhelm by telcphono or telegraph. Tho
storm began shortly before 0 o'clock, nud
nt n lato hour tho rain was still fulling,
Railway trnfllo In tho city streets wns
suspended for more than four hours on
account of tho continued electrical dis
turbance. Tho storm seemed to surround
tho city at every point, but was especially
sovoro In tho north.
Tho barn of John Hnrdorf, ono mllo
north of Litltz, was struck by lightning
and entirely consumed, with all Its con
tents, comprising tho season's crops.
