Monroo Park to tho memory of Jefferson

ceremonies which wcro lmprosslvo nml
pathetic. Under a bright sun and sky,
through densely packed streets, and with
tho npplnuso of countless thousands to
cheer them on, tho followers of tho lost
causo marched through tho city which Is
doarer to tho old Confederate than any
other In tho hind. It was a sight to stir tho
enthusiasm of tho most sluggish imture.as
tvlth bunds playing, companies moving
and colors Hying, tho pnrado passed In
review.
Two hundred children, boys and glrli,
wearing whlto nud redsashos followed tho
pollco, who cleared tho way and led tho
procession. Tho chief marshal, Gonoral
Gordon, in civilian dross, looked n royal
commander, as did Governor O'Ferrall,
who rode with bared head. Mrs. Jeffer
son Davis was in an open carrlago and
bowed and smiled ns tho cheers greeted
her on every sldo. Tho sponsors and maids
of honor, chosen for their boauty from all
the southern states, rodo In carriages fol
lowing that of Mrs. Davis.
Tho military undor command of Iirlga
dler General Phillips represented the pick
of southern soldiers. North Carolina was
tho first stato to oxhiblt n tutferod battle

was greeted with great cheers.
Tho voternns made tho pathetic feature
of the parade. Nearly all old, and for tho
most part weak and feeble, but summon
ing their remaining strength,they marched
with prldo anil pleasure, cheered on by tho
spectators. A largo number of them car
ried sticks for support, and many were
compelled to use umbrellas in order to
withstand tho rays of tho sun. On the
backs of tho marchers were many bullet
torn Confederate coats, old canteens and
knapsacks. Several darkies, true to their
old masters, marched with them in tho
parade.
It was n grand parade and a great spec
tacle, ono not likely to lj seen ngaln fur
yours. From 1 :4fi to 3 -AO o'clock veterans,
sons of veterans and military passod tho
city hall. Tho column moved very slowly,
owing to tho ago ond disabilities of many
of tho marchers. From tho military down
to tho negro cooks who brought up tho
rear tho pariulo was an Imposing and In
spiring hpectnclo. It was estimated that
lB.OUO men and children started in tho
parade, but a largo number wore affected
by tho heat, and withdrew before they had
marched many blocks.
AVhen tho procession reached tho park
tho military formed a square around the
grounds, preventing any but those In tho
parade from entering tho inclcuru Tho

Troops Called Out to Suppress
Disorder in Cleveland,
ONE OF THE STRIKERS EILLED.
lie Wni Shot by 11 Xnn-fiilonlHt Who Und
llcell AttnrKi'tl ty the Mob, mill This In
cident Led to the Culling Out iiMbe Mil
itary. Cl.KVEl.ASt), July 3. Tho strike nt tho
Drown Holstini? company's works has
reached a point where tho authorities os
well as tho strikers nro in no mood for
trifling. When tho non-union men left the
works at 5 o'clock last evening there wns
rioting. Two hundred and fifty policemen
emerged from tho gMcs, guarding llfty
thrvu workmen. An immense crowd had
gathered a block away, but the police took
n now routo nnd eluded them for tho mo
ment Tho strikers set up n yell and ran, soon
overtaking tho marching column, hooting
nnd yelling. A lingo moving van was In
tho rear, filled with strikers, and with it n
small wagon laden with empty beer bot
tles. Tho polico suspocfod that tho bottles
wero Intended as missiles, and compelled
tho driver of tho wagon to turn back. At
Wlllson nnd Euclid avenues a railroad
train blocked tho way, and an elTort was
made to drive tho van through tho guard
of police. Tho officers dragged to tho
ground tho driver, Fred W. Hearn, a mov
ing contractor, and tho man on tho seat
beside him, "W. J. O'N'eil, u paving con
tractor. These men resisted, and tho po
llco used their clubs on them with such
effect that their heads were soon swollen
masses of cuts. O'N'eil's ankle was broken.
Tho strikers in tho van jumped out, and
tho pollco charged tho crowd, using their
clubs on all the heads within reach. Frank
Coopeuheiker, a machinist, returningfrom
work nnd not a striker, was caught In the
.crowd and severely clubbed on tho head.
Hearn wns arrested ami locked up. The
strikers dispersed before tho onslaught of
tho police, and tho non-union men were
sent homo.
Mcanwhllo a tragedy hud taken place at
tho Hrown works. Albert G. Saunders, a
young student ot Cuso School of Applied
Science, whoso fother lives ot 331 Prospect
street, has been working for tho Hrown
company during vacation for the prnctl
cal knowledge it would givo him. He did
not leave with the non-union men under
police guard, but mounted his bicycle and
sought to reach home alone.
As he turned up Hamilton street a knot
of strikers saw him and shouted to him to
stop. Ho did not obey and they began to
throw stones and bricks at him. A brick
struck him on the hoad and knocked him
ofT his wheel, and ho claims that after he
was down they continued to stone him.
Hislug to his knees be drew his revolver
uml fired. Tho ball misled his as-ailants,
sped acriji a vacant lot and burled itself
in the breast of William itettger, one of
the strikers, who was walking through an
alley witli several companions. Hettger
was sent to a hospital, where he died in a
fqw minutes. Ho was a singlo man, 23
years old.
Patrolman Gibbons heard tho shot fired,
and rushing up seized young Saunders
and hurried him Into tho olllco of the
Dlshop-Habcock company. In a wonder
fully short space of timo a furious crowd,
which packed the streets as far us the eye
could reach, surged against tho front of
the ollice, demanding that Saunders bo
given up to It. Sumo uno brought n rope,
nnd the cry to lynch him was raised. A
few began to pry nt tho windows of the
ollice. when Patrolman Gibbons, who was
once a union workman, addressed the mob
and partly quieted It. Two patrol wagon
loads of police arrived, and a guard was
posed In front of tho building.
Long lieforo this Mayor McKisson, Po
llco Director Abbott, Lieutenant Colonel
Whitney, of tho Fifth rogimcnt.ond others
wero gathered for consultation In tho city
hall. Word of tho critical condition of
affairs was telephoned to them from tho
Dlshop-D.ibcock ofllco and a reimest for
lnllitia. Tho mayor responded by order
ing tho Cleveland City Guards and Com
pany F to tho sceno of the riot.
The guards arrived first, Justus tho mob
was preparing for another effort to cap
ture Saunders. As tho soldiers came down
tho street tho mob shrieked and howled,
and the guards woro compelled to open n
way for themsolves with leveled bayonets.
Several men and boys wero wounded
slightly by tho soldiers. Tho guards formed
in front of tho olllco, and just then Com
pany F was seen coming.
Amid n frenzy of excitement on tho part
of tho dense crowd, n patrol wagon was
backod to tho door of tho ofllco and
Saunders was jerked Into It nud mndo to
Ho on tho bottom. Tho guards formed
around It with bayonets at "charge," and
they forced their way to tho Central polico
station, part of tho howling mob surging
along with them. Saunders, whoso head
is badly cut up and his bodyn mass of
bruises, Is a prisoner, charged with tho
killing of Kettger.
Company F, in command of Mnjor Lle
blch, marched to tho center of the crowd
that remained behind. The soldiers wero
menaced and jeered. Major Lleblch halted
his men, drew his revolver nnd declared
that upon tho sllghtostnttempt at violence
he would givo tho command to flro. After
that tho nolso censed nnd the crowd scat
tered, tho company returning to quarters.
Tho mayor caused a proclamation de
claring tho riot act to 1h in force to bo
posted In tho neighborhood of tho Drown
works this morning.
Eulogized Campos nnd Denounced Weylpr.
MaDUID, July 3. At tho sitting of tho
senate yesterday Seuor Abarztun, ox-mln-lster
of the colonies, continuing the debuto
nn Cuban affairs precipitated by Marshal
Campos on Wednesday, eulogized Marshal
Campos' conduct In Cuba ami severely
criticized the policy of Captain General
