charmlnu wenther. An linmcuso thronir
is present, tind tho exposition grounds,
where tho convention Is hold in a largo au
ditorium erected for tho purpose, Is
crowded. Tho auditorium is hiindsomoly
decorated. As General Qorilou showed
his faco on tho rostrum u mighty cheer
went up and tho battlo scarred voternn re
ceived an ovation.
Before tho convention was culled to or
der Genornl Gordon was presented with n.
pavcl mado from treo from tho battle
field of Chlcamnuga. Ilov. J. William
Jouos offered fervent prayer to tho God of
Ijoo and Jackson and Davis, uononu
Gordon, without miikliiK a siieech, intro
duced Govornor O'Forrall, who on behalf
of Virginia welcomod tho veterans. Ho
paid on eloquent tribute to Jefferson
Davis, concluding as follows :
in calmer rears, when tho last ember
of sectional , feeling has burned out, and
tno last cord of lovo has gently bound tho
hearts of all Americans together, fathers
will bring their Httlo children to this spot
and tell thorn tho story of it pure, great
man, who suffered for his peoplo and for
tho right as they understood it, and how
for this thoy loved him as they loved no
other. Long as yonder uoblo river shall
roll its tldo to tho soa It shall behold no
man mora kingly. Hay tho story of his
life bo sweet in days to come, and at last
nil men como to understand Jefferson
Davis."
Whllo Governor O'Forrall was speak
ing Wado Hampton camo in and was'pro
sented by General Gordon. Ho was re
ceived with cheers, lasting soveral min
utes. At tho conclusion of tho governor's
address Mayor Hlehard M. Taylor deliv
ered an address of welcome on behalf of
tho city of Richmond.
General Gordon introduced Uoncral l'ey-
tou Wlso to turn over to tho veterans tho
building in which tho convention Is being
held. General Wlso mado an eloquent ad
dross in performing this task. Several
times during tho day there had boon calls
for a speech from General Hampton. When
General Wise took his seat tho calls were
renewed, au(l the South Carolinian walked
to tho front of tho stage.
Tho band struck up "Dixie, whllo tho
wholo audlonco aroso and applauded. A
veteran was passed to tho front bearing
an old battlellag that had boon shot
through in many places and wnved it be
foro tho vast assemblage. When Goneral
Hampton was permitted to speak spmo
olio cried "Louder, louder."
I used to bo ablo to speak loud enough
to mnko you chargo, replied General
Hampton. Words, ho said, could not ex
press his gratltudo for tho great honor
which had been done him. Ho had come
to mlnglo with tho veterans, perhaps for
tho last time, and do honor to tho mem
ory of that groat man, President Davis.
Tho general said ho would bo still light
ing now if tho Confederate Hag were wav
ing. Ho had no apology to make for his
courso. When his stato called upon mm
ho went into war as a private nnd servod
his country as best ho could.
General Gordon responded to the address
of welcome and received tho building on
behalf of tho veterans. Ho spoko in part
as follows :
"You will not wonder that I am liter
ally overwhelmed by tho flood of emotions
which this scene evokes. As wo look upon
tho grlzzlod locks and furrowed brows of
these men who thirty years ago wero sol
dlers of an army which they immortalized
by their deeds how utterly Inadequate aro
tho words of our Hps to oxpress tho emo
tions of our hearts. Let mo say to thoso
gentlemen who in tho name of this great
peoplo bid us welcome that tun and cor-
Cial as is our appreciation of this splen
did reception, wo aro in no sense surprised
at its princely munificence. o aro not
surprised, lwcauso wo know Virginia and
Virginians.
"Wero tho recipients of thoso honors ex-
soldiers of victorious armies, bringing to
a grateful peoplo tho trophies of thoir
triumphs, tho world would comprehend
tho meaning of such a welcomo us is hero
extended; but they woro not tho victors in
that Titanic struggle. Thoy aro the shat
tered remnants of long stneo disbanded
armies, which lonro to posterity no accro-
Hons of territory, no receptions of publlo
wealth or of political power. Tho legacy
which these men leave to their children
and peoploisa record of untarnished honor
and of tho most heroic defensive strugglo
In hutnau annals.
"On tho other hand, no popular assom
bllos of Intelligent and high spirited citi
zens in tho world's posterity wero freer
from nartlsan zeal or solf seeking spirit,
or Ignohlo joulousios or sinister Intent,
and tho niuso of history will yet embalm,
In ono of her sweetost stories, tho abso
lutely unselfish character and oxalted
alms of thoso Confederate gatherings. Tho
pathos of that recital will bo deepened by
Its simplicity, and its beauty heightened
bv tho lesson which It will teach to hu
manity.
"Thoso broad minded men, broadened
and onnobled by sacrifice, refined and
purified In the fires of affliction, embrace
as a brother overy true lovoroi tnoir coun
try, and acknowledge no superiors In de
votion to the commonweal ami in uniat-
terlng support to tho laws, tho Hag, tho
honor and tho froodom of this American
republic."
After tho announcement of tho commit
I je on credentials Goneral Stephen D. Lee
was Introduced to present tho report of
the committee on history. It was a
lengthy paper, and dealt with the wholo
subject or nistorios. uio report recom
mended tha establishment of a chair of
American history in southorn colleges and
universities, and the more thorough tench-
lug of history In tho schools, publlo and

A reception was given In honor of Sirs.

Temporary Chairman of the Dem

CLAIMED BY THE BIMETALLISTS,
A Committee, Appointed to Confer with

ClllCAC.o, July 1. At tho meeting of the
Domocrutlo blmctolHsts yesterday a com
mittee was appointed to confer with the
executive committee of tho national Dem
ocratic committee. Tho committee con
sists of Senator J. K. Jones of Arkansas,
Governor W. J. fltono of Missouri, Sena
tor David Turplo of Indiana, Governor
J. P. Altgeldof Illinois and Senator J. W
Daniel of Virginia.
Tho terms of tho resolution under which
this committee was appointed authorize
tho committee "to confer with tho oxocu
tlvo committee of tho national committee
in reference to nil questions affecting and
relating to tho temporary organization nnd
proceedings of tho national convention."
This committee will have 11 conferonco

CLAUDE MATTIinWS.
talked asitire them that no steps had liecn
taken looklnu: to tho selection of tempo
rary' "Ulcers. This has had the olToct of
aiusltiR tho memlxirs of tho lilmctalllc or
(taulwition to feel that there will lie no ef
fort at snap judgment. They will, how
ever, make their call and present a state
ment of the action of tho bimetallic com
mlttfu and ask that that committee be al
lowod to sugfriwt tho temporary presiding
oflhvr.
If this request is not granted they will
report to their full committco, nnd tho
full committee will proceed to select a
man for tho place and purpoofor his elec
tion at tho outsot of tho convention in tho
face of a contrary nomination by tho nu
tloual committee. This course will not,
however, Iki adopted without full
warning to tho national committee
in cose such wornlng uppoarn to
be necessary. Also In tho event that tho
national committee consents to tho
suggestion tho silver men will proceed
to name a man for tho place. It Is oven
lKwslblo that they would consent to n com
promise that would allow the national
committee to mako its own selection of a
presiding olllcer In caso they agree to tako
a silver man and to submit tho namo to
the bimetallic committee before announc
ing the name.
The sliver men aro very determined
upon the point of being thwartod in this
matter and are giving their entiro atten
tion to It. They will tell the national com
mittee very -plainly that tho only way to
avoid a clash in tho convention and for
tho national committco to avoid being
repudiated is for thorn to accodo to tho
wishes of the sllvor men in this matter.
Tho silver men have given very little at
tention to tho question as to who shall bo
selected to preside, but speculation turns
more freoly to Senator Harris, of Tonnos
eeo. It is suggostod that tho task may bo
quite urduoub for ono of Senator Harris'
udvanced ago, but his groat oxperionee and
parliamentary ability as well as his pop
ularity In tho party will render him a
formidable candidate If ho manifests a do
siro for tho honor. Tho numeof Governor
Hogg, of Toxas, is also mentioned In con
nection with tho selection.
Senator Turplo, of Indiana, Is among
tho rccont distinguished arrivals. Ho
comes to attend tho national Democratic
convention to which ho Is a delegate. "I
am hero," ho said, "in tho interest of Gov
ernor MatthowH for tho presidential nomi
nation, os aro all our Indiana delegates.
Wo think him tho most available and,
when all things aro considered, tho most
acceptable man whoso name will bo pre
sented to tho convention.' Tho senator
expressed the opinion that tho convention
would declaro unequivocally for the f roo
coinage of sllvor, and would submit to no
compromise proposition.
Tho Illinois delegation to tho national
convention voted unanimously yesterday
to support In convention a resolution for
tho abrogation of tho rule requiring prosl
dontlal candidates to receive tho votes of
two-thirds of tho convention to Insure a
nomination. Tho iiroposltion was sup
ported in an earnest speech by Govornor
Altgeld. Tho governor declared that tho
two-thirds rulo had boon a einv.o to tho
IJomoeratlo party over since It caino Into
existence.
Tho fact that tho Illinois delegation
postponed its decision us to what candi
date it would support In tho convention
has creoted almost as much comment as
tho decision which tho delegation reached
looking to tho abrogation of tho two-thirds
rulo. Tho only explanation mado Is that
it was considered desirable to look tho
field over more completely than hus yet
boon posrillile bulnre taking a position. It
is Intimated, however, that Governor Alt
gold, who is in oomplete control of tho del
egation, has plans of his own which uro
not yet sulllclontly matured to bo sprung.
Kx-Cuugrosnuian Williams, who urged
tho delegation to Indicate Its preference,
raid that ho had Introduced the subject lxv
causo ho believed that If tho Illinois dele
gation would take a position at this time
It could practically name the candidate be
cause of the Influence it would have upon
other doubtful delegations. Sir. Williams
admitted that his purpose had been to, if
possible, socuro Instructions lur air.lllaud.
