WasiilvutoX. Juno 23. A very Interest

tho goneral says, havo treated him with
groat courtesy, nnu Captain Ucuoral cy

Of tho Spanish troons. ho savs. thov nro
fairly well drilled, but undor n, systom of
tactics and manual totally different from
any tho gonornl had over scon.
As to tho insurgents, thov nractlcally
havo control of tho Island. Their cmls
sarlos come In and go out of tho towns
mid cities as thoy will, and ho liollcves tho
ontlronatlvo population is in sympathy
with thoni. As to tho inhumanity of tho
Spanish commanders. Goneral Leo es
pressos himself in tho plainest terms.
"They do not regard tho laws of modern
war nor tho usages customary among
civilized nations at nil," ho says.
"From Qvcry quarter thero is tho samo
testimony concerning tho barharitlos of
tho Spanish soldiers. Somo of tho ovf

nblo. Violations of women, the plunder

of rapine, is tho invariable story or prison-

to bo under suspicion, and it tako3 very
little, indeed, hero to place you under bus

General Loo doubts if peaco will boinado
now short of a basis of absolute Indepen

VoonviLLE, Tex., Juno 23. At Don

Nebraska Lumber company exploded,
killing seven men outright nnd seriously
if not fatally Injuring thrco others. It
seems that tho engineer was just ready to
start for tho log camp whon tho oxploslon
took place, some six or eight men being In
tho cab. Six of thoso seven victims had
tholr bonds entirely torn from their bodies
nnd wcro othorwiso mutilated beyond
recognition.
Tho dead nro i A. Ij. Doucotto, president
of tho Nebraska Lumber company; Grant
Hammcrly, engineer; Charles Walworth,
section foreman; Charles Smith, section
hand; Wyllo Sargent, mill hand; a man
known about tho mill as Frenchy, and
nnothor unknown man.
The wounded aro: Dan A. ITarmon,

fully scalded about tho faco nnd neck; D.
O. Sullivan, soctlon hand, badly scalded,
nnd Gcorgo Dowllug, scalded about tho

Tho reports of just how tho tcrrlblo ac

Ono report Is that tho cngino had just left
Doucotto and hud jumped tho track. Tho
men crowdod around to got tho cngino
back when tho oxploslon occurred. An
other report says tho men wcro In tho cab
when tho accident occurred. Tho englno
was what is known ns u Shay, with tho
machinery on ono sldo nnd tho drivers
propelled by cog wheels.
Just what caused iho oxploslon will
probably novor bo known. Tho water
which supplied tho cngino has been low
nnd muddy nnd tho sodlmont is supposed
to havo cakod in tho bottom of tho boiler
until itbecamo dangerous. Anothor reason
given Is that tho engineer let his witter get
low, with a hot lire, nnd turned on tho in
jeetor. An oyo witness says ho hoard tho
