sick. Ho said that ho was suffering from
grip, and thnt tho doctor had said that ho
would got better enro while confined In tho
fortress thnn In tho hospital. Labordo did
not complain of bad treatment, though

fined was damp and tho walls moist
Consul General Leo, having learned that
tho officer of tho guard was reprlmatuV.-d
by tho governor of tho fortress for allow
ing tho visit, visited Captain General
Wcyler to offor his excuses. Captain
General Wcyler, however, npparcntlyilld
not think badly of General Leo's visit to
tho prisoners, although it contravened tho
rules and laws of tho fortress. General
Leo informed Weyler of the sickness of
tho prisoners and of tho bad condition of
their dungeon. Goncral Weyler promised
thnt thoy should bo placed in a better sit
uation. Joso Mnceo, Perico I'croz nnd Itabl havo
entered tho town of Jlguanl, provlnco of
Santiago do Cuba, which was defended by
n garrison of eighteen Spanish soldiers.
General Gasco afterwards dislodged tho
Insurgents from Jlgunul. No further de
tails of this engagement havo been ro
celvod. Tho insurgents who were recently de
feated at Vcntas and Casanlva wcro under
tho leadership of Callxto Garcia. Major
Itamos had n skirmish at I'uenta Brava,
this provlnco. Tho Insurgents lost two
killed and tho troops lost n lieutenant and
four guerillas lulled and flvo men wounded.
Maximo Gomez Is reported to bo in tho
provlnco of I'uorto Princlpo preparing
something to distract tho attention of tho
government. In tho mcanwhllo Cnrlllo Is
advancing wostward, and Maceo is over
running Plnar del lilo.

New York, Juno 10. Two Americans
enmo through tho Spanish linos with Lieu
tenant Arteaga, Gcnonil Gomez's nido,
who arrived In New York city on Monday.
Thoy wcro Messrs. Uotnucourt and HUli
gnns. Both woro members of tho Illinois
stato militia, and went to Cuba on tho
Torre oxpedltion last November, and
worked thoir way up to tho rank of llrst
lieutenant. Now thoy nro In co-operation
with Lieutenant Arteaga In fitting out an
Important expedition.
Associated with them In this work Is
Major Tomns Rosser Itoerncr, who nlso
was with Gomez. Thoso four men havo
credentials signed by tho commander-in-chief,
Maximo Gomez, which constituted
each of them a commissioner to forward
supplies of ammunition to tho insurgent
nrmy. As soon as thoso arrangements
havo liccn perfected thoso commissioners
will return to Cuba.
"Tho troclm is not much moro difficult
to pass than any othor Spanish lino," said
Lieutenant Arteaga. "Our messengers go
back and forth at will. General Gomez Is
much plcnsed with tho trocha. Ho says :
'I havo 80,000 Spaniards shut In along that
trocha lino. I wish Woyler would estab
lish moro. They nro as good as prisoners.
As long as tho Spaniards nro thoro thoy do
not bother mo. In fact, they die along
that ditch faster thnn they would bo killed
in battle and with iniluitely less troubln
to our troops.'
"That is true. Tho ditch is broad nnd
ton feet deep. In this season it is full of
water, from which rises a vapor thnt is
bad for Spanish constitutions. Tho fovcr
Is doing moro for us than bullets."

In a fatal accident. Bonny Vail, who had
tho mount on Al Watts, wus badly Injured
nud ho died beforo ho could bo carried
from tho track. Tho horso was killed. As
thov camo around tho courso into tho back
stretch Al Watts was next to last, nnd
Mrs. S. was trailing behind. Al Watts
attempted to bolt, nud Vail loaned over to
tko nnothor turn on tho reins, but as ho
did so his hand slipped, and tho horso got
his head nnd fell, rolling over tno boy,
Mrs. S., coming up, leaped over tho horso
nnd rider. Vail, who lived in Kansas City,
louvos a widow nud several children.

sued for tho salo of additional 3 per cont.
ten year bonds to tho amount of $50,000,
000. There woro 480 bids received, amount
ing to $178,830,050, nearly allot which wero
at ratos which would yield to tho Investors
3 per cont. or loss. Ono bid for tho wholo
sum of $50,000,000, 'all or none,' upon tho
basis of 2.8(8 por cent., liclng tho most ad'
vnntageous offer for tho government thnt
was made, either slugly or by aggregating
tho separate bids, was accepted.
"Tho paymouts into tho treasury on ac
count of this salo, amounting to S.is,538,
500, wero not entirely completed until after
Dee. 1. 1894, and it soon becnnio evident
that tho transaction had not been effoctual
to stop withdrawals of gold, and on tho
8th of that month tho rosorvo had boen re
duced to $11,340,181. Tho situntion wus so

"Congress having fnllod to pass any
measure for tho relief of tho treasury or to
keep any action calculated to allay tho
serious apprehensions then existing In tho

and N. M. Rothschilds' Sons of London
and J. V. Morgan & Co. of Now York, on
