Tho chock was presented at tho Dank ol
Nevada by "A. H. Holmes," a merchan
dise brokor, who had been doing buslnesi
with that bank, depositing and withdraw
ing largo sums of mony for many mouths
previous. Tho check was made to his or
der on tho Crookor-Woodland bank, of
Sun Frnuclsco, and 120,000 of tho sum wns
paid over In gold without question, $2,000
being loft on deposit. Tho raising of the
check hnd boon ilono bo skillfully ns to
defy exports, and it was not discovered
until many hours nftcrwtjd, when the
record of tho original ?22 cnecK was
searched out. Shortly nftorwnrd Denuand

country for Decker and Cregan, nnd In
April last thoy woio arrested In Philadel
phia, but wero allowed to go before tho

ago, and havo beon under surveillance

followed and wero taken into custody be-
foro they had a ohanco to resist or to mako
their escape On tho way to pollco head
quarters Cregan tried to drop uu envolopo,
but was prevented from doing It. When
tho men wero searched they wero found to
be well Buppllod with monoy and valua
bles. Cregan had a 81,000 bill, twolvo f 10U
bills, a number of smaller bills and a val
uable diamond ring. Becker had sovernl
hundred dollars and a valuable diamond
Ecarf pin.
Tho onvelopo which Cregan tried to drop
contained a typewritten affidavit, which
bets forth that "Charles Decker, one of tho
defendants, being duly sworn, depososthae
the defendants did not havo nt any time
in their possession a draft for tho sum of
23, dated Sept. 17, lbOj, drawn upon tho
Crocker-Woodland bank, uor did they
ever havo any knowledge that such n draft
was In existence; that theso defendants
deny that they, or either of them, raised
6ald draft from $22 to ?22,000, or nny other
sum." Tho affidavit also denies tho re
ceiving of 20,000 in gold upon tho draft.
After tho arrest several bank presidents
nud representatives of banks visited pollco
hendqunrtors and had cousultatlona with
tho pollco authorities.
Bcckor and Cregan wore arraigned nnd
hold In $15,000 each, as fugitives from
justice They havo been committed until

A San Francisco dispatch soys: Friday
last tho grand jury found truo bills against
two men whoso names and crimes have
thus far beon kept secret. Tho men In
dicted nro Charlo3 Decker, known for
twenty yoars as tho "prlnco of forgers,"
and Jnmos Cregan, who has no equal as
a negotiator of spurious papor. Ball was
fixed in each caso at $20,000, and bench
warrants wero issued by Judgo Slack for
tho arrest of tho twooxpertcrlminnls. Tho
men woro captured yesterday nt Nowark,
N. J. Tho man now lu jail horo chnrged
with tho Nevada bank forgery, by which
a Woodland draft for $23 was cashed for

Two Killed by a Fulling Scaffold.
ElllE, Pa., May 14. Tho scaffolding on
St. Mary's Cathollo church, upou which
several decorators wero nt work, fell with
disastrous results to three of them nud In
