The judge, In summing up on Tuesday,
said ho hnd no option but to passBontenco
according to tho Roman-Dutch law. Con
tinuing, ho said that nlthough Dr. Jnme
son must have oome Into the country
ngalnst tho wish of tho prisoners and for
his own purposos or for the purposoa of
the British Chartorod South African com-
PRESIDENT KnUOEIL
pnny, tho fact romainod that ho came to
tho border nt tho lnvltatlon of tho reform
committee, nnd if thoy hnd not invltod
him thoro would not have been nn inroad
from anothor country. Could tho prison
ers reasonably oxpoct morcy for such a
serious crlmo as high treason?
After remarking that decorum had boon
maintained during tho trial, ho said it
was Ids painful duty to pnss the sontcnecs
required by law. At tho same tlrao ho
oxpressod tho hope that tho oxooutiro
would show tho same clomoney ns it dis
played to tho members of tho Jameson
party. Then, amid profound sllonco, tho
jndgo sontonced, individually nnd sopn
ratoly, Lionel Phillips. Georgo Fnrrar,
Colonel Frunols Rhodos nnd John Hays
Hammond to death and in tho foregoing
order. Tho prlsonors wero porfectly cnlm
nnd moroly bowed to tho judgo when their
Bontonces woro pronouueed.
Tho judgo then sentenced the other
prisoners to pay flnos of $10,000 ench, to
undergo two yours' Imprisonment, and to
throo years' bonlshmont, although tho
lnttcr punishment Is made subject to tho
will of the oxecutlvo.
Tho scntonoos pronounced caused con
sternation among all classes hero, nnd it
was tho genoral opinion that counsel for
tho dofenco made a great mistake in not
introducing ovldonco by which tho nceusod
would bo tried In proportion to their re
spective offenses, instond of placing them
nil upon tho same footing. The judgo did
uot glvo weight to tlio plea thnt tho pris
oners woro more guilty of folly than of
crime.
The prisoners are very bitter, and con
sider that thoy woro ill advised in plead
ing guilty. Fully forty of thom avow that
thoy could have proved their entire lnno

cept this and their giving a large check to
tho rellof fund for people temporarily
ruined by tho January crisis.
It was predletod after the death sen
tences had boon passed that it was moro
than likely that Presldont Krugor would
commute them to heavy linos, Imprison
ment and banishment for a long term of
years.
Tolegrams were put In as evidonco dur
ing tho trials of tho Rotormors which,
from a cipher dlsoovorod In Dr. Jamoson's
baggage after the fight nt Doornkoop and
tho surrender of the raiders, prove tho
complicity of tho Chartorod South Afrlon
company with the Johannesburg reform
lenders and Dr. Jameson. It is said that
documents in the possession of the Trans
vaal government compromise notablo por
sonagos and the officers in chargo of tho
English army.
