New Uedfoud, Mass., April 20. Nino

They were brought into port by tho tug
Qlndlntor, from tho schooner Norman,
which picked thom up after thoy had spent

Without food.
Tho lost nro Captain Robert Smith-
John McGulro, Frank Sylvia, Thomas
Itogcrs, George Eln, William MoAlllstor,

Tho sinking of the Campbell was ro-
marknble In soveral rospeots. Tho fatal
squall was ono of tho most suddon and
terrific in tho memory of the surviving
seamen. It was all over in about a min
ute. It happened so quickly and there
was so little warning that thore was no
mo to avert calamity or provide for os-
capo. As It was, it soems remarkable
that there was a single survivor. Tho ea
capo seemed but n trick of fato.
When tho squall struck her tho vessel
careened under tho torrlblo blow, nnd all
realized that their lives wore in danger.
Sevon of tho sixteen sailors quickly clam
bored up tho masts. No sooner hnd thoy
dono so than a second and far moro pow-
erful gust of wind seized the craft and
Boomed to lift it bodily out of tho sea.
Then, as if In a mighty grasp, tho vossel
was wronohed nnd givon a sudden twist
with such vlolonce that tho masts snapped
off oven with tho deck, liko toothpicks,
and wcro hurled far nwny from tho reach
of tho vortex made by tho ship as sho fell
back into tho water nnd sank liko a plcco
of load.
This Is tho story as told by tho survivors
Thoy loft Now York at 8 o'clock Friday
night, and tho Bquall struckthem soon
afterwards. There was not tho slightest
warning. The wind was blowing only
about two knots and ovorythlng seomod
f avorablo for a smooth trip.
After the sqaull subsided tho moon como
out and by its light tho soven survivors,
who still clung to tho masts in spito of tho
awful shook of being thrown through tho
air and striking tho water as they did,
wero nblo to find a dory, into which they
climbed,' after balling it out.
All night long and all tho noxt day thoy
driftod helplessly about Long Island
sound without food or water. Thou they
wore plekod up by tho schooner Norman
nnd later wcro transferred to tho tug
Gladiator, which brought thom to this
port. Thoy lost everything except tho
clothes they had on their backs.

Buluwayo, April 20. So far as the sit-

urday is duo to tho departuro of tho
enemy, which has been massed to the
north of tho town for several days, and
from which an attack hnd been almost
hourly expected.
ilils movement, howovor, brings little
comfort to those in Buluwayo. The excited
manner in which tho natives quitted their
positions indicated a confident nurnoso of
mischief. Thore is no evidence that they
wero alarmed Friday at tho demonstra
tion of the patrol of forty-two men from
uuiuwayo against tholr vnnguard. Al
though this vanguard was drlvon back
upon tho main body, the patrol did not
dare to place Itself within reach of the
overwhelming numbers of tho main body.
The direction taken by this body of hos
tile natives after quitting tho position to
tho north has not bcon loarncd. But It la
feared that the purpose of tho movement
Is to try nnd effect a junction with tho
robels in the Matoppo Hills, nnd thus sever
communications to tho southward. Tho
road runs through tho Mntoppo Hills to
tho south of Uuluwnyo, nnd this is a diffi
cult and dangerous 0110 for fifty miles
from here, nt which distance the road
roaches tho Mangwo pass. This angular
and precipitous dofllo, it is said, must bo
hold. It is of such a character that It can
woll be mado imprognnble against the at
tacks of native warriors, but for the samo
renson, if allowod to get Into tho hands of
