A regular meeting of tho local Teachers'
Institute was held in tho High school build
ing last evening, Prof. J. W. Cooper presid
ing. Prof. Craig of Woods' Business College
was present. Miss Wasley led in singing,
The program was opened with an iustrumcn
tal solo by Miss Mame Wasley, a new featuro
highly appreciated, Misses Cavanaugh and
Coogan favored tho Institute with a vocal
duett. Msss Lynch read a Tory interesting
article from tho School Journal and Miss
Annie L. Williams read the critic's report.

Tux Collector Ahiiiulteil.
Tax Collector M. J. Scanlau last night
went to the houso of John Pokes, on South
Emerick street, to collect taxes. Ho was ac
companied by Special Ollicer Joe Anderson,
to whom tho occupants took exception. Joo
Pokes, a brother of John, picked up a beer
glass, and throated to clear tho tlx duplicate.
John told tho boarders to bar tho doors and
stuff the mouths of tho visitors with tax re
ceipts. At tho samo time Mrs. Pokes gavo tho
collector a poko on tho head with a broom and
attempted to striko lilm with a chair. All
tho Pokes family and ono Mike Stcnkawicz
wcro arrested and hold under $300 ball.
Stcnkawicz could not givo tho security and
went to jail this morning. John Pokes was
re-arrested and committed to tho lockup in
delault of payment of three years' taxes.

Immigrants Located.
Health Ollicer Conry has located tlo Polish
and Lithuanian immigrants who came to
town recently and wcro referred to in a com
munication to the local board from the State
Board of Health. Under instructions from
tho latter the ollicer will keep the parties un
der surveillance for two weoks. They lauded
at Philadelphia on a steamship in which there
was a ease of varioloid.

Drowned at Auburn.
A. B. Heck, of Auburn, was found drowned
in tho Schuylkill river yesterday morning.
He was 81 years old and the father of Mrs.
John L. Hassler, of West Coal street. The
drowning is supposed to havo been tho result
of an accident. The funeral will take placo
at 1:30 p. in, to-morrow and interment will
be made at Auburn.

Hon. Joseph Wyatt, who lecently pur
chased the property ho occupies at tho cor

Kicked liy a Mule
James F. Major, of 231 North Bowers
street, a contractor at tho Shenandoah City
colliery, met witli a serious accident this
morning. A mule kicked him on tho left
sido of tho head, Just nbovo tho templo. Dr.
M. S. Kistler put four stitches in tho gash.
"Dinkey" Hughes Jailed.
Harry O'Donnell, alias "Dinkey" Hughes,
the pugilist who surrended at tho last boxing
tournament of tho National Club, surrendered
to poverty this morning and went to tho
Pottsvlllo jail on a ehargo of defrauding
Martin Sheelor out of a board bill amount
ing to f 20.

A meeting of tho Methodists of Pottsvillo
was held last night to select a site for tho
erection of a new church. It was decided
to purchase tho Wolff property, at tho cor
ner of Market nnd Fourth streets, for tho
purpose. Tho membership of tho church is
over six hundred.

Tho ten-year-old daughter of Michael
Downey, of Jackson's Patch, was seriously
burned hy her cloths catching fire whilo
dumping a pan of hot ashes in tho yard. In
extinguishing tho llamcs her father was
burned about tho hands. Tho child will

Stolon Watch Itecovercd.
Detective Amour yesterday went to Girard
villo and recovered a gold watch valued at
$30 that was stolen on March 17th last by
three young bloods of that placo from a
house of ill fame on West Apple alley kept
by ono Zcttio Fogarty, who claimed tho
watch as hor personal property. No arrest
was mado in the case.

Tho annual banquet of the Central Eepub
llcan Club was held last evening at the Hotel
Tumbling Bun, in honor of tho birth of the
Iiepublican party and tho birth of Henry

A derrick pole at tho new breaker being
constructed at Park Place broke this morning
and fell upon Harry Bordner, breaking his
