christian churches. All the local congrega
tions observed It yostoiday witli impressive,
services and many of tho churches were
elaborately adorned with Kuster llowcrs.
Among the most Itnprossivo services wore
thoe held In tho Herman Lutheran
church, on West Cherry Btrect, Tho
attendance was very largo, tho caivacitv
of the church being taxed. Tho singing of
the choir was exceptionally impressive,
especially the rendition of tho soul-inspiring
Ulster hymn, "Ho not Afraid." Kov. John
Oruiiler, the pastor, preached tho sermon on
a text taken from tho gospel of St. Mark,
ltlth chapter, 1-8 versos, nnd handled tho
subject In a masterly .manlier. Communion
service followed and was partaken of by 150
members. Miss Ida Dornliach presided at
the organ during the service.
Tho congregation of tho First Methodist
Kplseopal church observed tho day by hold
ing song and praiso service In tho morning
and in the evening tho pastor, Itcv. Alfred
Ifecbner, preached n eloquent Easter
sermon.
Itev. C. W. Scchrisl preached two Easter
sermons in tho English Lutheran church
yesterday, ouo in the morning on "Chilst's
Will, orTostan;nt1"nnd "Death and llos
urrection of Christ" in tho evening.
Rev. C. II. Spauhling, of Hazleton, offi
ciated at tho services in tho Calvary Baptist
church yesterday morning nnd evening.
Special anthems were Tendered by tho choir
at botli services.
Many peoplo of town attended tho evening
service in the Zlon Lutheran church, at Gir
ardvillo, last evening. This congregation
always makes Easter scrvico a feature and
tho ceremonies last evening compared favor
ablo with tho notablo ovents of past years in
the church. Tho service was opened with
tho choir's rcnditionofH.il. Danks' "Oh,
Glorious Hours," by tho choir, and was fol
lowed by the usual evening liturgy, after
which tho iwstor, Uov. O. E. Leopold,
preached a powerful sermon from Paul's
Epistle to tho Phillipians, 3rd chapter, 20-21
verses. This was followed by E. L. Ashford's
lienutifnl anthem, "Gloria in Excelsis."
Tho singing was remarkably good, especially
the solos by tho organist, Miss Whitman,
of Ashland, and the duetts by Miss Whitman
and Miss Wcndel, of Girardville. Com
munion scrvico followed nnd was partaken
fur tho first timo by tho following children,
who were confirmed on Palm Sunday :

Mary Darling Wagner, ltattio May Strali,
Bertha Mackel, Willie Thomas, Harry Portz,
Louis Albert Scheele.
Communion service was held in tho Trinity
Reformed church of town yesterday, morn
ing and evening, and were attended by largo
congregations. Tho communions were tho
largest in the history of tho church. Tho
pastor, Rev. Robert O'Uoylc, preached an
excellent bermon from I Corinthians, 15
chapter, 20th verse. Tho catechetical class
took its first communion. Tho church was
beautifully decorated witli Easter lillics.

Tho funeral of tho lato Pierco Shortall
took place this morning from tho family res
idence, on West Coal street, nnd was attended
by over 800 people, including members of tho
Phoenix Hose Company, National Club and
Shenandoah Foot Ball Club, nil of which the
deceased was a vory active and popular mem
ber. Many very beautiful llqral oil'erings wcro
laid upon tliu handsome clotii covered casket.
The firo bell was tolled while the eortcgo
proceeded to and from tho Annunciation
church, wliero High mass was held. The
pall bearers wore Messrs. Thomas Ryan,
John Delaucy, James Dougherty, Thomas
Reynolds, John Martin nnd Joseph Mauley,
TIio reniaius wero interred in tho Annuncia
tion cemetery. O'llara was tho funeral
director.

At noon to-day lire started in tho hay loft
of M. II. Master's, on Korth Pear alley, and
within a few minutes It Rained great head
way. For a time tbo dense volumes of smoko
that poured from tho building seriously em
liarmssed tho firemen, nnd at tho satno timo a
high wind blew tho fiamos to tho south,
threatening adjoining frnino buildings and
causing fears or a conflagration. Several
strong streanuof water were soon in play and
in about half an hour the firo was under con
trol; but not before It had communicated
with tho second story of a house on the north
sido of the stablo owned by J. J. Frauey and
occupied by tho family of John Shirey. Tho
damage to both building will not exceed
$500, however, and tho firemen deserve praise
for confining tho flamos so well. Tho dwell
