breaker No. 1, at Priceburg, owned by O.
S. Johnson and others, was totally de
stroyed by lire Saturday night, the origin

Two Miners Hurled Alive.
TAMAQUA,Pu.,March30. John Lafforty,
employed as a minor at Silver Crook col
liery, of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation
company nt Mlddleport, with his butty,
James Dolun, was buried under a fall of
coal while at work. Dolan recolvod only
n fow cuts and bruises, and succeeded in
digging out himself and Lufferty, but tho
latter received Injuries which will likely
prove fatal.

Mrs. Thomas G. Allen, wife of tho pro
prietor of tlio Merchants Hotel, at Pottsville,
died at Heading on Saturday.
Mrs. Franklin P. Miller, of Pottsville, died
very suddenly yesterday afternoon. She
was conversing with some friends in tho par
lor, when sho gave a gasp and fell over.
Death was almost instantaneous.
Marie, 5-weok-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Earner, of West Coal street,
died yesterday.

evening.
Messrs. I'rantz Hettinger, of Ashland, and

Louis Kemarowskl, of tho First ward,
appeared before Justice Shoemaker on Satur
day night and issued a warrant for the arrest
of Peter Scrobel for assault and battery,
committed upon tho plaintiff at a Polish
christening. Kemarowskl testified that
Scrobel had met him in tho yard whilo under
tho influence, of liquor, nml assaulted him by
hitting him on tho head with a billy ami
afterwards cutting him witli a knife in the
loft hand. Scrobel was held in tho sum of
$300 bail for trial at court. A few moments
later Mrs. Helena Kemarowskl, wife of tho
plaintiH', preferred a second charge of assault
and battery upon her, accusing Scrobol of
inflicting a hole in her head witli a billy.
For this chargo ho was held in flOO for ap
pearance at court.

Councilman Kulp Dead,
F. It. Kulp, a member of tho Borough
Council of Taraaqua, died at that place Sat
urday morning. -Tho deceased was 47 years.
old, and was well known throughout tho
county. His death leaves a vacancy in tho
Council, and breaks tho deadlock that has
existed in that body for tho past month.

Two lectures in mining science, by two of
the faculty of tho Stato College, M. C,
Thisong, professor of mining engineering,
and H. H. Stock, assistant professor of
mining and mettallurgy, will he held lu

Mrs. Heck, of Mahauoy City, assisted by
Mrs. John Mctz, ot Shamokiu, instituted a
lodgo of tho Ladies' Temple Of tho Golden
Eaglo, with ninety-six members, at Mt
Carmel last week. An effort Is being mado
to organize a Tcmplo of tho same order at
Ceutralia.
Overcome by Oases,
Henry Millwurd was overcome by gases
whilo at work ou tho stack of the Kaior
browory, at Mahanoy City, this morning and
was unconscious about two hours. Two men
were overcome while nt tho same work on
Friday. An addition Is being made to the
stack and. tho work Is carried on without
taking tho fire out of tho furnaces.

COMMITTED SUICIDE.
A Sowing Mnchliio Agent Well Known
Hero Sliools Himself.
Georgo W. Ncusbaum, a sewing machino
agent well known in this county, committed
suicide at his homo in Lohighton this morn
ing by shooting himself in tho back of tho
head. Death was instantaneous. Tho do
ceased is survived by his wifo and six
children. He had been 111 for somo tlmo and
it is believed ho was temporarily insane
when ho committed the act.

They Got Away.
Four Poles who got their pays on Saturday
left town to-day owing John North, a Polish
btorokeepor in tho First ward, for supplies
furnished them during tho pastmonth. Iliey
left on a Lakeside Hallway car. North wired
a description of them to Mahanoy City and
followed in tho next car, but the men got oil
at somo point between this placo and Maha
noy City and OMflped tlio Constable who was
watching for them at the latter place.
