HxpiKlltloii im n Meamrs of I'rolectlon of
Egyptian IiiturcnU AgnlnU tho Dervishes
PAItis, Jfnroh 20. Egypt contlnuos to bo
tho chief topic of discussion In tho lobbies
of the chamber of deputies, nnd tho stnte
Inont mndo by tho inlnlstor of foreign nf
fairs, lil. Uertholot, mlds nbundant fresh
mnterlnl for dlsotisilon. Tho general feel
ing Is that M. Ilerthelot's langungo wns
modorato nnd cnutlous, nnd It has served
to dispel tho nnxioty of tho modorato poli
ticians, who wore consumed with tho foar
that France wns rushing to an open rup
ture with Great Ilrlttilu nnd tho drolbund
ns a result of the soml-ofllclnl announce
ment of the remonstranco which had been
convoyed by M. Uertholot to tho British
ambassador.
As tho situation adjusts Itself, nnd the
Intentions of tho different partlos to tho
European buhinco begin to emerge, It be
comes moro nnd moro ovldentthat Franco
Is not propured to tnko any extreme meas
ures to avert tho Nllo campaign. Not thnt
she llkos It any bettor than when It wns
first broached. It would bo hard to And a
Frenchman who scos In tho proposed cam
paign anything but a plan of aggression
on tho part of Groat Britain. They all
deny utterly that thero Is any need for It
ns n measure of- protection 01 Higyptian
Interests against tho dervishes.
Thoy protest that Franco's Interest in
tho wolfaro of Egypt Is equal to or greater
than Great Britain's or tho other powers.
It Is polnteiUy argued that a largo ma
orlty of all tho Kgyptlan lunil noiuors nro
French citizens, nnd thnt If Egyptian In
terests woro ronlly threatened by tho dor
vlshos Franco would hnvo as much Inter
est In protecting them as Great Britain.
Sbo also, It Is argued, has a greater lutor
est In tho prevention of tho dissipation of
tho Egyptian Burplus in nocdloss oxpouso
thnn has Great Britain.
Tho only purposos which anyone In
Franco will consent to soo In tho British
plan are, first, an oxcuso for prolonging
lndoflnltoly tho hated occupation of Egypt
by tho British troops, and second, a reoe
cunatlon of tho Soudan with tho intention
of barring tho future do3lgns of Franco for
a prosperous colonial expauslon on the
upper Nllo.
M. Bortuelot roiorreu yestoruny to tuo
clangors which would result from arous
ing religious fanatlclsm.not only totgypt,
but which, In tho lnngungo of tho minis
ter of foreign affairs, "might even extend
to tho possessions of Franco and other
Europoau nations," the precipitation of a
holy war of tho fanatical Moslem hordes
of tho Khalifa Abudnlla would bo vlowcd
with consternation In Franco. Tho growth
of Franco's sphoro of Inlluenco oast of
Lake Tchad In central Africa lias ex
tended over pretty much nil tho Mahom
etan states of Baghulrl, Wadaland Darfur.
Thero Is tho keenest disappointment
felt at Gormnuy's assontlng to Groat Brit
ain's proposnl to oxpond tho Egyptian sur
plus on tho Nllo campaign. Tho German
nnd French colonlnl projects In central
Africa havo been conducted on tho most
friendly torms, and havo submitted In
common to the grumbling disapproval of
Great Britain. Tho Franco-Gorman ngreo
nicnt accords Franco tho unrestricted right
to acquire territory to tho eastward of her
present possessions, ovon to tho point of
lntorvoulng betweon British Uganda nnd
tho southern Egyptian possessions. Koa
sonlng from past accord with Germany In
central Africa, French statesmen seem to
havo entertained n hope that faermany
would decllno to acqulesco In a British
project to thwnrt French plans on the up'
per Nllo. But tho promise ot aid to Italy,
Germany s hard pressed ally, that would
extricate her from hor unpleasant predic
ament In Abyssinia, seoms to havo been
im Inducement that Germany could not
bring horself to decline.
Novortheloss Franco Is not prepared to
go to oxtromo measures In obstructing tho
Nllo expedition. French statesmen nro
alert to tho fact that tho Egyptian project
Is not wlthoutlts' bitter opponents among
Englishmen thomsulvos. Thoy are woll
aware that a largo body ot Influential En
glish stntosmen regard tho Nllo expedit ion
simply as a prlco paid (u heayy price, they
think) far accord with the drclbund.
Thero Is a skepticism telt and oxprcssod
hero about 1 rauco's power to prevent the
expenditure of tho Egyptian budget under
the prcsont circumstances. The value of
tho argument ndvnncod by M. Bertholot
lu his address to tho chamber yesterday,
that unanimity of approval among the
guaranteeing powers is required to au
thorlzo tho withdrawal of Egyptian funds,
is doubted oven among Frenchmen. It Is
ussortod that unanimity is required only
when tho uso to which tho funds are to be
put is Intended to bo permanent.
It is also feared that oven though the
dissent of Russia and Franco should hold,
and tho commissioners on tho Egyptian
debt should not voto tho sum required out
of tho Egyptian surplus, Great iirltaln
would herself supply tho money and men
and mnko tho wholo projectadlstlnctlvoly
British instead of Egyptian enterprise,
occupy tho Saudan in ber own name In
stead of that of Egypt, and enter upon
furthor aggressive action in Africa.
Ridiculing the French Clalina.
Loudon, March 20. Tho Paris corre
spondent of Tho Tlmos ridicules tho sug
gestion made by M. Berthelot, tho foreign
minister, that n unanimity of the Egyptian
debt commissioners is nocossary to au
thorize an expenditure of Egyptian reve
nues, ''because," ho odds, "It this were so
any slnglo powor could lock up tho money

A PEOULIAR REMEDY.
Something About tho New Discovery for
Curing Dp"pl!i.
(from Mich Christian Advocate)
Tho Itov. F. I. Bell, a highly esteemed
minister residing in Wcedsport, Goyiign, t o.,
N. Y Ina recent lotter write s follow:
"Tlioro has never lwen anything that I have
taken that has relieved the Dyspepsia from
whleh I have suffered for ten years except
the now remedy called .Stuart's Dyspepsia
Tablets. Since taking them I hare hail no
distress at all after eating and agsln fter
long years can sleep woll. ltcv. 1". I. Hell,
Wcetlsport, N. Y , formerly Idnlia, Colo."
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets is a remarkable
romedy, not only because it Is a certain cure
for all forms of Indigestion, hut because it
seems to act as thoroughly in old chronic
coses nf Dyspepsia as well as in mild attacks
of ludigettion or biliousness. A person has
dyspepsia simply because the stomach is
overworked, all it mints is a harmless veget
able remedy to digest the food and thus give
it the much needed rest.
This is the secret of the success of this pe
culiar remedy. No matter how weak or how
much disordered tho digestion may bo,
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets will digest the
food whether the stomach works or not.
New life and energy is given not only to tho
stomach but to ovory organ and nerve in the
body. A trial of this splendid medicine will
convince tho most skeptical that Dyspepsia
and all stomach troubles can be cured. The
tablctaro prepared by tho Stuart Chemical
Co. of Marshall, Mich., but so popular has
tho remedy become that Stuart's Dyspepsia
Tablets can now bo obtained at any drug
sforo at SO cents per package.

attack made by the Insurgents bold and

admits this much, and says tho troops are
worthy of the highest praise, as they had

General Llnnros followed Macco towards

had changed Ills route, taking tho north

Colonel Hornnndoz proceeded to Candcl

Colonel Hernandez reports having had

to himself of soveu wounded. Tho Insur

It Is very evident that tho forcos of Go

bnnds having only about 30 por cent, of
their number armed. Tho arrival of Col

the insurgents.
A detachment of troops near Cardenas
has captured an expedition bringing arms
and ammunition to tho Insurgents. Theso
woro carried to a barracks protected by

of Insurgents thereupon nttackod tho bar
