Editor Bvi;nino Hkralii ! Allow me
space In tho columns of your paper to show
how tho School Directors of West Mahanoy
township arrango their political advantago to
their personal convenience. When regulat
ing the salaries of teachers ono will say to
another, "Aro you going to ralso your son's
salary?" and tho other will nnswor, "I guoss
I will," and then plank goes another $10 on
tho son's salary, without any motion, or ap
proval of tho other Directors. It Is all right,
so long as certain Directors do It, and thoso
people aro thoso who always boldly pro
claim that they do not run for ofllce for
glory. I do not know of a placo In
Pennsylvania whero a School Director do-
rives a maintenance from the office, except
hi esi .uanaiioy township. When pro
polis aro being received for supplying
tuo schools with fuel somo of them will
manipulate matters' so that friends will have
his bid in for $033, but at tho end of the
year ho receives $700, Tho citizens have
time and again petitioned the Board for
night schools, so that the boys who work In
tho breaker by day may have an opportunity
to attend school at night, but our economical
and "BoV Pattison-llke School Board pleads
lack of funds. It docs not oxerciso much
economy when it gives a man $150 annually,
besides his salary of $00 a month. Tho
amount of this extra money the teacher re
tains has frequently been a matter of public
speculation. Another public feature is the
crusade for docking teachors for losing time
and failing to provide substitutes, but the
Instituto order, of $10, which goes into tho
eampalgu fund, is marked full time, even if
there is only ono hour on it. The question
now before tho people is this: Will they
encourage School Directors in underhand
work and the squandering of revenue of the
township by ro-clecting them to office? No
citizen -who cares for tho welfare of the town
ship can do bo witli tlio facts given staring
him in the face Tho candidates on tho
Citizens ticket are men who understand
something about tho efficiency of the school
room, who havo received an education and,
if elected, will seo that tho Interests of the
taxpayers are protected. They deserve tho
support of every honest and Intelligent
citizen who desires to see the revenue of tho
township used legitimately for tho mainten
ance of tlio schools. v. i).
