o'clock yesterday forenoon, when tlio tlilo
"was only about half high, the American
liner St. Paul, which had boon stuck fast
In the and off Long Branch for ten days,
was pulled off tho shoal and slid into deep
water without injury. The wind was
blowing with considerable force, tho Kea
was good, and tlio position of tho St. Paul
was such that sho was able to idd horsolf
considerably by her propellers. The ves
sel reached her pier in this city at 1.30 p. in.
A. C. Griscoin, Jr., vice president of tlio
American Navigation company, said to
day: "The ship, so far as wo know, lias not
sustained tho slightest Injury. Wo will
have our own nion inspect tho ship oxter
nnlly and internally, and, in addition to
that, sho will bo examined by tlio proper
authorities."
The ofllqlals of the company aro author-
ttj;.fpr,Haying that the St. Paul will prob
ably sail for Southampton in about two
weeks, as advertised. They also state that
a complcto and thorough Investigation
will bo Instituted at once regarding tho
accident.
Shipping men aro already at work fixing
up a general average list of the losses sus
tained by tho St. Paul. All agroo that the
balvago that will have to bo paid will bo
the largest ever collected from any one
vessel since the business of building ships
was begun. Tho lowest cstiinato places
this amount at $100,000. Tlio loss will fall
on the underwriters, as the American lino
does not lnsuro its own vessels. If mis
management could be proved against tho
officers of tho compnuy, however, suit may
bo brought and tho total loss collected
from tho steamship company.

ton gathered In Muslo Hall Inst night to
witness tho bouts arranged by tho Prcscott
Athlotio club. Tho most important bout
was that between Lesllo Pearce, of Phila
delphia, and Stanton Abbott, the English
lightweight. Tho mon wore matched for
fifteen rounds, nnd, according to agree
ment, as both mon were on tholr foot at
the end of the fifteenth round, it was de
clared u draw. It was a very scientific
contest.
