2,000 moving In tho neighborhood of Ca
marioca, a town only about fifteen miles
from tho city of Mntanzas, and north of a
lino between Matanzas and Cardenas, nnd
very near tho coast. Tho stations nt Cnobas
and Cnbazas, which aro In tho immediate j
neighborhood of Matanzas anil to tne
south, hnvo been burned, as woll as tho
canefield of tho Joaquin plantation. The

an advantageous position, Tho engage
ment which followed was evidently a hot
ono, tho Insurgent cavalry making vigor
ous attacks upon tho flunks of tho Spnn
lsh forces. Tho artillery flro of tho Span
iards proved effectivo, ul tho official re
port says that tho insurgents took flight
in two directions, having beon divided by
tho assault upon them. They loft seven
killed and many arms, and carried nway
many wounded.
It is reported that tho Spanish forcos
went In pursuit of tho flying iusurgents
and overtook them nt tho Caney planta
tion. Hero tho enomy made a vigorous
resistance for nn hour, but woro finally
compelled to retreat, leaving eight killed
and carrying away their wouuded. Tho
troops, it Is snld, lost seventeen wounded.
It is further reported that an engage
ment Is now In progress at a point between
tho villages of I'orico, Cuovitas and Jovol
lanos, between General Vaudez and tho
Insurgent forcos. Cuovitas, Porloo and
Jovellauos aro all in tho west, northwest
of Colon, nnd aro from twelve to twonty
milos nearer the city of Matanzas, and
