Mikveapolis, Deo. SO. Tho nnto-mor-tcm
statement of Harry T. Hnywartl, tho
till text of which makes 80,000 words, Is
In many respects a most romarknblo docu
ment. It was imulo lunlor tho most formal
vontlltions nntl with solemn assertions on
tho murderer's part ihat ho wafltellltiB the
truth. Not only does Hnywartl claim to
havo murdered during his brief career no
less than flvo different persons, but In dq
scrlblng tho various tragedies In which ho
figured ho shows an utter absenco of
human feeling nud n pleasure In his
nchlovemcnts that mark him as ah un
usunl typo of criminal. Tho language used
In describing his criminal adventures Is In
tho snino careless, flippant stylo that char
acterized his testimony on tho stand.
His flrst murder was that of Carrlo Hass,
nenr Pasadena, Cal., and ho describes the
nffalrthus: "I met this girl at a dance,
nnd, to cut H short, I killed her. She had
monoy, and I shot hor nnd burled her.
That Is nil of that. I look at It lu this way
It was not much of an amount It was
1700 and somo odd that sho had. I got tho
money. Sho would uaturnlly holler, and
I fooked nt It that sho would bo bettor oft
If dead. Thoro Would not bo anybody to
holler around, nnd sho did not havo any
relations. Sho was young, pretty nnd a
littlo bit on tho sporting order. Tho money
was left her by hor fttther. It has always
been In my head to kill a porson nnd not
look nt their face after thoy are dead, be
cause there's that mind business. That
leaves an Impression on your mind, That
Is what makes murderers confess. Tho
coiiRclenco bothers thorn."
Ho then goes on to describe how ho got
hor mdnny on somo protoxt, Inveigled her
out to drive In tho mountains nud how ho
shot her. Sho did not dlo at once, but
Hopped around. Ho burled her as best ho
could, but worried about It afterwards
and hired n man two weoks after to go
out and put hor lu a box and throw It Into
tho port at Los Angeles. Ho know this
man's namo, but on tho prlnclploof honor
nmong thieves would not tell It. Nothing
hml over como of tho matter.
Money, ho said, was hla flrst object lu
life, girls tho second nnd travel tho thjrd.
There was a girl In Minneapolis with
whom ho was going, and who had Id.OOO ft
year. Ho planned tQ kill ljer, but illd npt
becausn there was no wny ho could got her
monoy. But ho longed to io tho depd.
"Slio used to mako mo so d d mntj." sold
Hnywnrd, "thnt I wanted to choko her. I
can understand how Durrant killed thoso
two girls In isau Francisco with pleasure."
Onco when tending bar In Lonir Branch
ho 'hnd killed a. consumptive man who
enmo there, and who had monoy. Tho
consumptive had money nud wanted to
die. Tho namo Harry refused to toll, on
tho ground that ho had an accomplico who
might get Into troublo now. But this
murder was by shooting, nnd the body
was thrown into tho river.
Thon ho killed aChlnnmnn In Snu Fran
cisco in tho latter part of 1893. Regarding
this murdor ho says: "I wns playing with
n Chinaninu for small stakes nnd tho Co
lostlnl was cheating me. I jumped up nnd
told him thnt I had found him out, nml he
enmo at mo with a knife. I pulled tho
heavy chair from under mo.but I could not
got n swing to strike him, so I poked tho
leg nt him and struck him In tho fnco. Ho
fell, nnd then I punched tho leg Into his
oyo and It crashed into tho skull, and ho
lay still. After that I dug n hole In tho
plnro under tho floor in tho shed, broko up
tho chair and burled It with tho body there.
I nover heard any troublo from it, although
tho papers mado n report of tho finding of
tho body.
"Tho last troublo beforo this was nt El
Paso Del Norte. I wns mixed up with n
girl thero and wo used to paint things
onco In a whllo. Ono night her brother
cnught us together and had us tlcnd to
rights. Ho wns crazy, and enmo nt me
with a knlfo. I tried to beat him off with
n chair, nnd tho girl cried to mo to shoot
him or ho would kill mo and showould bo
found out. I flrod nt him nud struck him
In tho shoulder, nnd ho dropped tho knlfo
and tho girl picked It up. Ho was quiet
enough after that, nnd I took him to n
drug store nnd had his wound dressed.
Ho mado up n story of how it happened to
ward oil suspicion. I promised to marry
tho girl, nnd nil wns well for tho tlmo. I
left thero nnd learned aftorwnrds that ho
died from blood poisoning frpm tho
wound." '
Ono of Harry's nuditors asked him if ho
over saw spooks. Ho replied that ho often
saw facos, but not of real people. Cather
ine Glng had never bothered him nfter
death, but tho girl whoso brother ho had
killed onco appeared to him beforo tho
Gltig killing ami said: "Harry, look out;
look out."
Tho object of tho Glng murdor wns
money nnd hatred, no hated tho girl be
cause sho wns so stingy ho had obtained
$3,800 of hor money and moan nnd sus
picious, Sho had n way of putting her
hands on him nnd pinching him that
mado him so mad he wnuted to oh'oko her,
nud could scarcely keep from it until tho
time wits rlpo.
Thostorloa of Hllxt and Adry on tho
stand wore practloully correct, and Harry
exonerated Adry from nil criminal con
nection with uny of his sohomos. Blixt, ho
said, wns surely hypnotized, nnd was not
responsible. Ho felt sure thnt tho man
should not have been given hut two or
throe years in prison Instead of n life sen
tence. In closing his statement Hnywnrd
said:
"I havo told the truth, so holp' mo God
If there is n God. If there is, Ho car tn Inly
won't blnmo me, ns I have honegtfy. fol
lowed tho dictates of my consoleuot). Don't
say that I am sorry, for I am not. I hnvo
mado my bed and will lie in it without
kicking. X hnvo had my fun nntl will pay
for it."
Ho admitted knowing a lot nbout green
goods, nud had used counterfeits n good
deal, but would not tell what ho know, us
it would endanger others.
